New VS tv ratings record

The San Jose vs Boston game from the other night got a .5 rating (whatever that means), beating out the previous best held by the Wings vs Pens from November. Its good to see that VS is getting some steady growth. If they got some solid commentating and good national coverage then they would really grow, but one step at a time I guess.

I finally got Versus thru Wow last week and was able to watch both the Monday and Tuesday games and their coverage of the sport is horrible, so that can be added to their list of things to work on. They cut to commercial as soon as the whistle blows every chance they get no matter what is happening on the ice. Sometimes there is shoving and scrums that can lead to heated emotions and rivalries. These types of things build anticipation among fans for next meetings and Versus conveniently cuts this out of their footage. Versus also has a horrible replay system if one at all, they don't replay hits, good shot, scrums, or anything worth analyzing in the game, this also helps the late viewer learn more about the game in general. These are my beefs, but it may not be entirely their fault if they are on some type of time slot to meet, but again, it really hurts the viewing experience of the game.

The best feasible way for the commentating would be to rebroadcast the CBC/TSN/SN feeds.

My biggest pet peeve with Versus is how they never replay penalties...Considering they are the official station of the league, one can only imagine they are instructed to not replay questionable calls that would show what a joke the officiating in this league is.

Also, the interviewing they do between periods and during stoppages is absolutely horrendous. The people they have interviewing the players have never seen a game of hockey in their life and ask the most mundane and cliche questions.

and the answers coaches and players give are all cliches as well. I wish they wouldn't do it at all.

"well, we got to play better, get some shots on net, come out skating hard, blah blah blah, "

Can't say I've seen a poster named after a cap number before. Welcome to the new NHL, I guess.

I absolutely hate interviews during the game. I know they're done during stoppages, but it just seems kind of intrusive to me. This isn't baseball, where they interview yesterday's starting pitcher during the game today. To be fair to Vs., it's not like they're the only ones doing these interviews though.

the .5 means that was the percentage of tv's tuned in to the game i believe. So one in every 200 tv sets in the nation was watching VS.

Correct. A .5 rating means that .5% of all the tv's in the universe (whether the tv is on or not) were watching the game.

Share just refers to the percent of people watching tv and watching the game. So the Share might have been 1. Still a pretty lowly number. Reruns of My Name Is Earl get a rating of 2.3.

i agree with your post, and i think the bolded part really spells it out. they more or less *can't* question the NHL or express any beefs with the league or its administrators in general.

it's frustrating because i never feel like i get good, honest coverage from vs.

at the same time, if vs. is the only national exposition of hockey (other than the occasional NBC game and the last four games of the finals) then i guess i have to wish them well and hope their viewership grows, just because it's good for the sport.

i didn't get to watch the game, but i sure as hell wanted to...i think any NHL fan would have loved to see that game. i think if they did a better job of playing up rivalries and making big games feel big, they'd be in better shape.

For me personally, the games could be on FX or The Cartoon Network for all I care. I just want to watch hockey, just be on somewhere where I can get to it.

That being said, I have no problem with it being on Versus. I also like Versus because they broadcast college football games of the conference my school is in. :D
