Tomas Kaberle set to waive no-trade clause

Tomas Kaberle has given Brian Burke a list of 10 teams that he's willing to accept a trade to before the trade deadline. Reportedly, mostly Eastern Conference teams on his list. There's a strong rumour that if Florida moves J-Bo (looking less likely by the day as Florida continues to win), Kaberle would slide into Florida to be re-united with his ol' pal Bryan McCabe.

Pavel Kubina is also going to provide Burke with a list of teams in the near future, as both players lose their NTC's this summer and would prefer to control their destiny while they can.

Their NTC's are void from the first day of the Entry Draft until August 15, 2009 provided that they are on a team that misses the playoffs.

Why are some people so "lazy" and just wanna stay in the eastern conference? everyone should know by now the western conference is the place to be.. is it all due to the travel schedule? whats wrong with sitting on a plane relaxing for a few hours and play with better teams and a better hockey overall?

Kaberle apparently doesn't want to be too far from his family. He'd prefer to keep his family in Toronto, so they say.

But if he got a family why can't they move with him? shouldn't be that hard

Because people and families tend to build lives where they live. It's not as simple as just saying, "suck it up and move wherever I chose to go".

Also, calling the West the superior conference isn't entirely accurate. While I would tend to agree its been the stronger of the two in recent history, before the Ducks won the Cup in 07 the past 3 winners were from the East. On top of that, 10 of the past 17 Cup Winners currently reside in the Eastern Conference.

Just like "The Shanahan Rule", which dictated here he preferred to play this season. TSN reported this morning the Kaberle list has 10 clubs on it.

I have heard (and this is just a rumour, nothing more) that Boston, New Jersey, Florida, Buffalo, Vancouver, Chicago, San Jose, Detroit, NY Rangers & Philadelphia are on the list.

If both of those players move this summer, which the guys on HTM think is pretty much guaranteed, what will happen to your sig? Will you just have all the names crossed off? :)

That's a plausible list, excepting maybe Vancouver (but maybe he likes it there?)

Motown and Chitown are both eastern teams stuck in the wrong conference.

In my eyes, the East won all those cups because the winner always had an easier route to the finals. The west has, over that period of time, been a much more physical conference and therefore the "surviving" team was simply too battered to keep up with their opponent.

Bulls***. 4 rounds of playoff hockey is 4 rounds of playoff hockey, regardless of who you play.

So playing Calgary, San Jose, and Anaheim en route to the finals is the same as playing, say, Montreal, New York, and Buffalo?

Thinking about travel and playing style here.

I'd also note that during that period the better teams in the West often had bizarre meltdowns that allowed weak teams to make it to the finals.

EDIT: Meaning that crappy teams like Edmonton made it to the finals.

If you want to call it that, than it could just as easily be said that the Eastern conference teams were mentally stronger than the West teams the couldn't overcome their "bizarre" meltdowns.

But does that make their accomplishment any less significant? Just because the West tends to be more physical doesn't mean the East is a bunch of cream-puffs. Also, if were going to say the West is more physical I would say that the East uses more speed, which would also be physically draining through 3 rounds. The conditioning needs to be there just as much as it does in the West.

I know we are deep in defense but Fippula and a 1st for Kaberle (obviously they would want more)

I'm sick of Fippula I'm tired of yelling at my tv hoping he hears me to "SHOOT THE F*CKIN PUCK FIPPULA!"

Really? They'd want more? A top 6 forward who is young and also a first round pick sounds like a lot for him. I'd use one of our pending FA and a couple of later to mid level picks. Maybe Hudler+Lebda+3rd+7th. That's two players with Stanley cups, one who is young and has top 6 potential plus mobile d-man and two picks.

If there's no 1st round pick, Burke hangs up the phone.

Plus, with Detroit's pick likely no better than 27th or so, he'd probably look for an additional pick, as well.

Burke has already said he won't trade Kaberle unless somebody overpays for him.

Just to chip in something related to that West vs East thing here, not really contributing to that argument, just pointing out something I suddenly noticed:

Detroit had to play against Tootoo, then like half the Avs roster, then Ott in the playoffs last year. Epic cheapshot potential.

They also escaped playing teams like Calgary, Anaheim and San Jose. It goes both ways.

I don't justify the Wings' Stanley Cup last year, and I don't think they had it as tough as it could've been either. It's irrelevant. The Red Wings did what great teams do when the playoffs start regardless of who they played.

How on earth does Kaberle fit into this team's pay structure unless Lidstrom and Rafalski both retire? Because, let's face it, he doesn't crack that top two the way he's played the last two years.

He's a very good defenceman, but I wouldn't throw Hudler into a trade to get him.
