Randy and Drew are Randy Hahn and Drew Remenda, play-by-play announcer and color commentator of the San Jose Sharks, respectively.

Jamie Baker is a former shark who (I believe) does the radio color commentary.

The guy in the avatar is wanted for attempting to steal the Stanley Cup. If you see him, contact the authorities.

That's GREAT!!

Maybe the hit was in retaliation for something in the previous meeting of the 2 teams. It did happen near the beginning of the game. Cleary may have been looking for Thorton when he came on the ice.

I agree with the first part, it was great, and I disagree with the second part.

I agree with the first part, it was great, and I disagree with the second part.

You may be right. I went to the GDT of the 1/17 Wings @ San Jose game and re-read alot of the posts. Joe was his usual idiot self that game. Injured Franzen w/ a late hit, gooning it up etc.

I copied some posts and put them below. Don't blame me for spelling and "Ducks"

(under_par_00 @ January 18, 2009 - 12:18AM) *

You could read the lips of one of the Sharks players on the bench after that scrum with Franzen and Thornton. "Bunch of *******"

Obviously Franzen was trying to ***** at Thornton for that late hit but Big Joe just wanted to rough it up.

Yeah it was Shelley, but whos gunna go with him on our roster?

Like to see Mule get Joe at it thou.

****************************************

Right, so unless you can back it up, don't go up to Mr. T cuz he isn't going to

just sit there. God, it's pathetic. We are *******. Great hockey players, but *******.

****************************************

he didnt say bunch of *******, he said thats ******* bulls***. he may have been refering to the penalties that are going to be levied for that scrum. maybe thornton goes for roughing.

****************************************

Are we starting on the PP? They said Thorton got the extra 2?

Anyone know?

The Ducks colour guy is throwing a total hissyfit. He got the extra two for running Franzen when the play was done.

****************************************

Franzen injured?

Franzen's hurt??

franzen hurt nooo

oh good , Frazen is injured.

noooo Franzen.... hope his head is okay, Thornton was shoving it pretty roughly

****************************************

Thanks Thorton, you injured our player.

****************************************

No Franzen the rest of the night. Lower body injury.

****************************************

Franzen got hurt on that late hit that's BS

So maybe....

In all fairness, there was little, if any, talk about Joe's play in the postgame discussions.

Cleary was already committed to the hit and then JT turned his back, there is no way he could have stopped or let up at that point. Not a homer, just an observation.

I thought he turned a bit earlier, but even so- Cleary is still in the wrong. He may not be able to avoid the hit, but he still deserves the penalty(s) that come of it. Kind of like when you rear end someone- they might have caused the accident by pulling out in front of you without leaving you room to stop, but you're still at fault in the eyes of the law because you hit their rear end (well at least that's the way they fault accidents here in Atlantic Canada).

What goes around comes around. That was a totally viscous hit and Cleary deserves to be fined and suspended for it. Bettman won't do anything as usual though.

You haven't seen many hits from behind have you? 95% of the boarding calls made in this league are for hits worse than Cleary's hit on Joe. It was a fair 2 minute minor, but certainly didn't deserve anything worse than a 5 minute major.

Lastly, c'mon, you'd have to expect a few people to be pretty upset to the point of irrationality. :)

Regular posters here on LGW are definitely accustomed to irrational posts after a loss! Hell, we read enough irrational BS whenever anyone posts a thread with Crosby in the title. Of course that BS comes from the polarization of this community into two large groups- "Crosby Haters" and "Crosby Lovers", with the small group of "Crosby Neutrals" adding some spice to the mix.

I'll put it like this -- If the same exact same hit was put on one of our stars (Zett, Dats, etc) 99% of these boards would be up in arms about it.

That said, I am glad Cleary hit him, I think hits like those make ppl start thinking where you are when you're on the ice, thus taking away from their concentration. But in regards to the hit itself in terms of "dirty" or "clean" I guess the answer comes down to who you are asking and what team they were rooting for.

Or we could be objective about it.

I haven't seen the hit in question, but my general understanding is that Cleary committed to a clean hit and Big Joe turned his body at the last second, giving Cleary no time to ease off. That doesn't sound "dirty" to me.

It wasn't really dirty. Cleary has never intended to hurt anybody before.....Give me a break. He plays hard and finishes checks. I would have liked to see him put Thorton through the boards. Might have made the playoffs easier.

Oh, I agree with you in regards to loving the fact Cleary plays that type of game, and a hit that literally put Thornton through the boards would be something else (even though I don't like seeing anyone get hurt to the point they can't play, especially if they get hurt by the intentional actions of an opposing player).

I am just saying if you play devils advocate, and ask yourself if the roles were reversed, Thornton puts the same hit on Cleary, people around here would be upset.

That said, I guess it boils down to one of those sports situations where it all depends on who you ask, and what team they were cheering for.

Yes.. Bettman - the self-proclaimed Red Wings fan. He's so in love with this team that he thought the Holmstrom ass-interference call to disallow goals should be put in official rulebooks.

/End sarcasm.

Seriously, though - Joe Thornton turned his back after Cleary was already coming at him. That's hardly "vicious". That's just a bad turn of events mid-check.
