And to think there are LGWers who still love Steve Downie. Oh, they won't admit it now, but before the McAmmond episode they just loved the way this good ol' Canadian boy played the game of hockey. They turned a blind eye to his troubles in juniors. They went silent on the McAmmond issue. And now the kid slashes a ref?

He's been a f***ed up little puke forever. He has problems. He doesn't deal with them well. He has anger management issues and an inability to control himself.

The best memory I will ever have of Steve Downie is Jack Johnson elbowing the f*** out of him in the side of the head. A cheap shot is a cheap shot yes. But when you have it coming to you, you've made your own bed and now you gotta accept the consequences.

Kind of off topic, but if anyone watched that game, why was the US goalie pulled with 40 seconds left in a 2-2 tie? Just wondering, because that seems kind of strange.

No idea, maybe they needed a goal to advance or get a top seed or something?

If I am not mistaken the US team thought they needed a win to advance but I could be wrong.

They lost 3-2 in that game and still managed the 2nd spot, the fins were 2-2 in pool play while the US was 2-1-1. But I believe at the time the Swiss (who ended 1-2-1 and on the outside looking in) were about to play the Fins for the last game and all 3 were endanger of being tied for 2nd.

So going into the last 2 games the US would have been 2-0-1, the Fins 1-2-0, and the Swiss at 1-1-1.

Now that I look at it, they must have just been playing for the seed, worst case scenario they would have been 2-0-2 with the Swiss winning they would have been 2-1-1 and Fins would have been 1-3-0, US is still in even if both games end in a tie, US 2-0-2, Fins 1-2-1, Swiss 1-1-2 the US is still in.

Right:

Can 3-0-1

US 2-0-2

Swiss 1-1-2

Fins 1-2-1

Nor 0-4-0

Hmm, weird! Must have been going for a higher seed!

I have never liked Downie; he has never shown that he has a clue of what is involved in being a hockey player or a human being. With the help of "Wikipedia", let me remind everyone of part of Downie's "illustrious" junior career:

"Downie blindly cross-checked and then fought teammate Akim Aliu during practice on September 28, knocking out three of Aliu's teeth. The incident stemmed from 16-year-old Aliu's refusal to take part in a hazing incident, which involved rookies being forced to stand naked in a cramped bus bathroom. The team suspended Downie for five games and Aliu for one, and Downie was told to undergo professional counselling. Head coach Moe Mantha was suspended by the OHL and later fired by the team, and the team was fined $35,000 by the OHL. Downie left the team and requested a trade, and was eventually traded from the Windsor Spitfires, going to the Peterborough Petes in exchange for Peter Aston."

I remember when he was on the U20 Team Canada that won the WJC in 2007. I was certain he was going to do something stupid and embarass hockey, the tournament and the country, but he didn't. For that, the country let out a huge sigh of relief at the end of the tournament. There is no place for someone like this at any level of hockey, period.

Downie's suspension upheld!

Source, TSN

Springfield, MA (Sports Network) - The American Hockey League's Board of Governors unanimously voted to uphold the suspension of Norfolk Admirals right winger Steve Downie.

Downie was suspended for 20 games on March 5 for deliberately striking an official with his stick during a Feb. 28 game at Hershey.

Norfolk, the AHL affiliate of the Tampa Bay Lightning, had appealed the suspension and asked the league to consider additional evidence.

Downie, who was suspended indefinitely immediately following the game, bruised the shin of linesman Mike Hamilton on a center ice face-off following a Hershey goal near the end of the game. The Admirals contended that Downie struck the official accidentally during the course of play with the follow- through of his stick after winning the face-off against Hershey's Andrew Joudrey.

The Board convened via conference call on Tuesday to hear the Admirals' appeal, but ultimately upheld the suspension.

Downie will be eligible to return to the Norfolk lineup on April 11.
