While I don't think Ovechkin is the best player, he probably would be the best choice for the Wings based on the teams current needs/wants, which probably makes the thread irrelevent for what the initial poster was looking for. On a different team, you might pick someone different.

Anyway, on the part that I bolded, I think for this to happen, it would be a significant change for Ovechkin, that is not the position he is used to playing.

Have you watched many Caps games over the last 4 years? Alex has spent a ton of time up on the point waiting to unleash the one-timer. Same as Kovalchuk. Which would be even better, because I don't think Sammy has one-timed a single puck while he was up high. He only ever does so when he rotates down below the lefthand circle.

Malkin just turned 22, Ovechkin is about to turn 24. Ovechkin lead trhe League In giveaways and was in the last 50 for takeaways. Malkin was 8th in the league in Giveaways.

Hmmm, that is a really misleading way to look at their ages. By the way you put it, it looks like Ovechkin is almost 2 years older, when in fact, he's less than a year older. Malkin turns 23 before Ovechkin turns 24.

Ovechkin is 2 years older than Crosby though.

As Norrisnick pointed out, Ovechkin actually plays the point quite often during Caps PPs, and has a nasty shot to go along with it. I dont mind Sammy as much, but Ovechkin would be much better than Sammy on the point.

The games I've watched, he seems to spend most of his time around the faceoff circle, to the right of the goalie.

Then you haven't watched alot... For some reason he likes to shoot from the Out-side. Meaning Left Point with his right-handness.... But he doesn't onetime from the point often... he usually comes down to the top of the circle or maybe even closer but He loves taking control of the puck @ the left point... shufflling... finding a shooting lane and then letting rip one of the best wrist shots in Hockey.... He probably has the strongest wrist shot in the league. I don't want to overrated his shooting ability so I'll point out that he took 250 more shots than anyone in the league and his shooting precentage is a piece of s***. The whole Capitals/Thrashers System revolves around feeding Kovalchuk/Ovechkin the puck.
