Z Winged Dangler 2,082 Report post Posted May 20, 2009 I took this from a story on TSN.ca "The NHL's all-time leading scorer is set to earn $6.5 million for the upcoming season and $8 million for the 2010-11 season. According to the paper, Reinsdorf has no interest in paying a coach more than five-times the league average." Gretzky was a great hockey player as we all know, but what makes his a great coach worthy of that much money. He hasn't made the playoffs yet and the Coyotes have had minimal improvement for such a highly paid coach behind the boards. He's not nominated for the coach of the year, and can't even touch the coaching abilities of half the coaches in the league, like.....Babcock. I think we've found a good chunk of the Coyotes debt. It appears the revenue sharing program that bailed out the 40 mil to the Coyotes is paying Gretzky's salary. Five-times the league average for coach's salary is absurd! Reds4Life 51 Report post Posted May 20, 2009 I thought he put some of his money into that franchise and now gets it back? Could be wrong though.
beepbeep 3 Report post Posted May 20, 2009 Evidently some moron laid that contract in front of him to sign, so who should be blamed???? I can't stand Gretzy but what ******* would even offer such a stupid contract........ If you signed it then, live with it!!!!!!
titanium2 867 Report post Posted May 20, 2009 Shouldn't the great one be smart enough to be aware of the consequences of taking on such a contract, and thereby refuse to accept it? You can get two good players with that kind of money and pay the coach. I guess Wayne really needs those louis vutton bags after all.

servo 15 Report post Posted May 20, 2009 The lowest paid player on the team can afford a Louis Vutton bag. The reality is, if the contract was offered it is a mutual agreement. Many ventures in business never work out. Thats the risk. They put up more money than he has provided with a mediocre team. The best thing for that francise is to move Gretsky from behind the bench. The amount of money they pay him is irrelevent to the poor consistency.
Guest Shoreline Report post Posted May 20, 2009 (edited) Well, before knowing the entire story here (which goes for everyone), I would say that you can't blame a person for signing on an offer for that much any more than you could blame a store for cashing a check for expensive items. If they want to pay that much Gretzky would be an idiot to say no. I will say though that whatever fiscal problem the Coyotes are in, this would be one of the reasons why. Piss poor management doesn't help either. Edited May 20, 2009 by Shoreline

kook_10 1,705 Report post Posted May 20, 2009 (edited) I always wondered what runs through his head as a coach. His hockey frame of reference is so different from everyone else's because he was always in a different class from everyone else. I actually think that would make it more difficult to relate to the players. I can see being able to coach people who are better than you, but it must be like coaching kids to him. weGotTheCup89 41 Report post Posted May 20, 2009 well... even thats an awful contract, it's not his fault, and hey, he never earned that much during a year during his career so more power to him.

Some of the most knowledgeable people on a subject are not always the best teachers. They assume too much that the people that they are teaching already should know and understand most of what they are telling them. The best teachers are those who can explain a subject in terms the student can understand/relate to and never assume how much they all ready know.

Gretzky's salary doesn't count against the player's cap. So who cares what he makes. Gretzky taking less money so that "2 good players" could be signed as you mention doesn't matter either because the Yotes are in a bankruptcy situation, no? Taking money from Gretzky and giving it to somebody else, if it would fit under the cap, would simply be putting the expenses somewhere else. My guess is Gretzky's salary isn't enough to put the Coyotes into the dire financial situation they are in. His salary is indicative of an organization with 2 problems. 1. It ain't run well. 2. It's in piss poor market and should be moved back to Canada.
