Man this cap sux ass. Betman's "parity" really punishes anyone who drafts successfully and works hard to develop their talent.

actually on my roster I had Rafi retiring. I just kinda get the sense that if we win it all this year, this may be his last go around. I mean what else is there to do for him. He's at the peak of his game. He's still got it but occasionally his age shows a little. I mean what does he have to look forward to hanging around until everyone on this board starts bitching at him about missing assignments because he's "lost a step"

You must not realize how awesome getting paid 6 million a year to play defense with NICK ***** LIDSTROM is!!!!!!! I mean, I can't think of a better job in professional sports.

I think there is some confusion on how the CBA and the the actual structure of the Salary Cap work -

If a player is signed to a multi-year contract and is over the age of 35 - even if the player were to retire, the average salary/year continues to work against the teams active cap for the remaining years of the original contract. This is to prevent front loaded contracts (i.e. I sign Mats Sundin to a 5yr $12M contract at $10M, 500k, each of the remaining years at an average cap hit of $2.4M. Sundin retires after the first year, collects his $10M from the 1 year, and we only had to take a hit of $2.4M).

So, if Draper, Maltby, and on the off chance that Rafalski retire, we still have the average/year salaries counting against our cap. In this case, it would be roughly $2.5M still counted against our cap if Draper and Maltby left.

So - there is little or no reason to let them go if they wanted to continue to play.

The current roster of players already under contract leads to an active cap hit of $47.3M.

Assume the Wings allow Chelios, Hudler, Samuelsson, Kopecky, Conklin all go.

Now the Wings call up Abdelkader, Helm, Howard all up - and that is an active hit of around $2M.

That gives the Wings a Cap number of $49.3M with Ericsson and Meech active.

So, the Wings resign Leino for $1M average salary. $50.3M

That gives them Wings around $5M a year to resign Hossa.

If the Hossa resign occurs - this would most likely mean Lilja and his $1.25 has seen his final days with the Wings - trade for a 3rd or 4th round draft pick in the future and give the Wings enough wiggle to land Hossa for around $5.5M and gives the Wings the following roster.

Center - Datsyuk, Zetterburg, Filpula, Abdelkader

Right Wing - Hossa, Cleary, Helm, Maltby

Left Wing - Holmstrom, Franzen, Leino, Draper

Non-Active Reserves - Ritola, Ryno, Axelsson, Downey

Defense - Lidstrom, Rafalski, Stuart, Kronwall, Ericsson, Lebda

Non-Active Reserves - Meech, Kindl, Kolosov,

Goalies - Osgood, Howard

Non-Active Reserves - Larsson

I dunno, I just get the sense that if Hossa wins the cup this year he is off somewhere to a multi-year deal for 7+mil/yr. Maybe LA? Maybe San Jose trades Marleau or someone and signs Hossa? I just can't see him leaving 2 or 3 mil a year on a multi year deal to sign with Detroit when he already has his cup. He gets less ice time here, hasn't had a stellar playoffs, and probably doesn't like the city all that much compared to SoCal or even Florida. I also can't see Holland wanting to tie up that much salary in one guy when it could mean keeping Hudler, Sammy and Leino instead. Don't put all your eggs in one basket - and I don't believe Holland will.

Assuming Maltby and Homer retire:

2009-2010 Detroit Red Wings

Johan Franzen $3,954,545

Chris Chelios $750,000

Derek Meech $483,333

GOALTENDERS

Chris Osgood $1,416,666

Ty Conklin $750,000

Gives 1.78M to play with for raises and the like, and keeps this team strong for the long haul. Yeah, Cheli's still in there, pretty much as a depth pick.

Holland has already basically said Chelios won't be back, regardless of if he wants to keep playing. Also, Abdelkader only makes $740k. But it will be Howard as the backup, not Conklin as Conklin will likely take a deal for somewhere between $1.75m to $2.5m to play 1A starter if not #1 outright for another team. And Kopecky would be retained on the 12-man roster of regular forwards ahead of Downey, so that's $575, meaning after all that you would have $2.098m for raises and the like on your 22-man roster, rather than $1.78m. You would also have 13 forwards and 7 defensemen, rather than 12 forwards and 8 defensemen.

Val - Dats - Homer

Cleary - Zette - Franzen

Sammy - Helm - Leino

Kopecky - Draper - Maltby

Downey

Lids - Rafi

Kronner - Stuart

Lilja - Ericsson

Meech

Ozzie

Howard

20k over the cap.. waaaaah

Get rid of Meech. Fixed. Me likes  Or if Downey hangs them up, Chris Neil would do fine.

Alternatively, living in my own little world, Wild are looking to trade Boogaard so trade Sammy for him, Downey retires, call up Abs:

Flip - Dats - Homer

Cleary - Z - Franzen

Leino - Helm - Kopecky

Abdelkader - Draper - Boogaard

Maltby

Lids - Rafi

Kronner - Stuart

Lilja - Ericsson

Ozzie

Howard

Pffft....it could happen :hehe:

Buttman made it sound like the cap will stay the same. Based on that the total of this roster is:

$56,677.777.00

Hudler, Jiri or Sammy $1,600,000

Datsyuk, Pavel $6,700,000

Darren Helm $599,444

Cleary, Dan $2,800,000

Zetterberg, Henrik $6,080,000

Holmstrom, Tomas $2,250,000

Draper, Kris $1,583,333

Abdelkader, Justin $740,000

Maltby, Kirk $883,333

Franzen, Johan $3,950,000

Leino, Ville $875,000

Filppula, Val $3,000,000

Lidstrom, Nicklas $7,450,000

Rafalski, Brian $6,000,000

Stuart, Brad $3,750,000

Kronwall, Niklas $3,000,000

Ericsson, J $900,000

Lilja, Andreas $1,250,000

Meech, Derek $483,333

Lebda, Brett $650,000

Osgood, Chris $1,416,667

Howard,Jimmy $716,667

12 forwards, 8 defensemen and 2 goalies. Meech a two-way player. 8 defensemen because of another extended season and some of these guys need a rest..... very key. Can't afford Hossa. Keeps the depth players. Between Hudler and Sammy .... whoever accepts 1.6 mil or less will stay..... Sammy will probably take less to give some cap space......can't keep both either. Holland is NOT a guy who will just waive a bunch of players.... as much as people want to dump Maltby he was still valuable in this cup run..... Holland is loyal to the players who are loyal to the organization..... Maltby has been a round a lot longer than Hossa and the Wings simply can't afford Hossa without dumping at least 3 players. In saying that next year is Maltby's last year on his contract anyway.
