Montreal acquires Gomez from NYR

Whatever happened to:

"The team that gets the best player wins the trade" ?

Gomez > Higgins

McDonagh will be better than Gomez alone and then you can throw in a player that is a 20 goal scorer with a much better contract than Gomez (who's vastly overpaid and overrated). In addition to that, New York now has cap space to sign Hossa, Gaborik or trade for Heatly.

Gainey got fleeced.

Horrible trade for the Habs. They trade a solid 2-way 20 goal scorer at a fair cap hit and their #2 defensive prospect for a mediocore #1 center at a ridiculously high cap hit for 5 years. If they were going to take one it should have been drury who only has 3 years left on the contract.

+1

How is Gainey a GM of an NHL team. What a horrific trade for the Canadiens.

I wouldn't consider Higgins as a solid 2-way but he's a good offensive player... getting McDonagh is a STEAL...

What 2 are you thinking of?

I'd wager a good bit that Redden is one of them.

Edit: I imagine Drury is the other. The guy has a reputation for being a leader and a clutch performer, but he has been logging less than 60 points per regular season in New York, and, despite his reputation as a playoff warrior, he has underperformed in the playoffs---four goals and three assists in 16 games---since the Rangers signed him. For one of the team's marquee players---at $7m---this just isn't good enough.
