russianswede919293 95 Report post Posted July 22, 2009 http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=285407 Looks like they expect to be missing DiPietro again this year. Smart signing... Roloson-Biron could be a great tandem for them next year. Its also a shame to see DiPietro get this seriously hurt.
hooon 1,089 Report post Posted July 22, 2009 it is unfortunate that dipietro is always hurt, cause i did at some point actually want to see him play. I'll never forget how Milbury traded luongo to sign dipietro out of the draft, lol. And then they signed him to the most absurd contract in sports history. Sigh, poor islanders. Biron-roloson is a good combo though for them, its a shame they are also stuck with dipietro until the end of time.
P. Marlowe 748 Report post Posted July 22, 2009 Unbeliavable. Biron has posted fine numbers with Flyers for two seasons. I don't understand how some team didn't pay him 3-5 millions. At least Los Angeles and Tampa Bay could've made him their number one.
edicius 3,269 Report post Posted July 23, 2009 Hmm, this might convince me to watch the Isles a bit this coming season. It'll be nice to see someone reliable between the pipes for them.

At least Los Angeles and Tampa Bay could've made him their number one. I don't get it either. I mean he's been good in Philly yet they're always bitching about needing good goaltending. And they honestly think switching Biron for Emery is the smartest option!?!

And they honestly think switching Biron for Emery is the smartest option!?! possibly having more guys on defense in philly that aren't complete lugnuts would help their goalie as well. pronger is no speedster either...he's actually quite slow. timonen is more or less the only guy on their point with wheels, coburn is a good d-man, but not overly quick. Krayzie_Bone 58 Report post Posted July 23, 2009 I was hoping the Red Wings would sign either Biron or Niittymaki. Well that is not going to happen. How much money the Wings end up with the goalie duo of Osgood and Manny Legacy this year?

TheDetroitRedWings 286 Report post Posted July 23, 2009 Wow...so for all those people saying, "give Osgood a break, he doesn't take up that much salary," here is a perfect example of how you can upgrade in net without breaking the bank. I would take Biron over Osgood ANY DAY OF THE WEEK. Biron is faster, bigger, and younger. Would have been well worth the couple extra 100k.
P. Marlowe 748 Report post Posted July 23, 2009 (edited) Emery owned Biron in a fight. Therefore, in the Flyers eyes, Emery is better. When Biron found out that Flyers signed Emery he said to himself: "I'll even sign with Islanders for 1.4 milions rather than resign with Flyers." I would take Biron over Osgood ANY DAY OF THE WEEK. Biron is faster, bigger, and younger. Would have been well worth the couple extra 100k. Edited July 23, 2009 by P. Marlowe
55fan 5,133 Report post Posted July 23, 2009 They'll regret losing Biron once Emery challenges Crosby to a fight and gets banned from hockey forever. Only if Emery wins. I'm surprised he couldn't command a higher salary. (Back to Biron, here.)

e_prime 1,936 Report post Posted July 23, 2009 As I live in New York, and like to watch hockey... I watch the Islanders. (or at least try to, keep the game on until I start heaving things across the room in frustration) If we can look past the insanity that were the Mike Milbury years... and trust me it's hard. What he gave up... *sigh* Anyway, let's look back at last year's goal tending situation. DiPietro injured after a couple starts... really? Ricky? Shutdown for the season, again? - currently lifetime Islander/LITR Joey MacDonald, remember him?, did absolutely nothing to help an already sagging team. - currently UFA Wade Dubielewicz sent down and then when they tried to bring him back up he got snatched off of waivers by Colombus. (Still a bit of a learning curve with Garth yet) Personal note: While no rock in net, this was the guy that when push came to shove yelled, "Get on board boys!" and carried the Isles into the playoffs in '07. He was also a fan favorite. Who doesn't love to yell "Dooooooooooobie!") - he signed with Minny this offseason Yann Danis - Was probably the brightest spot in the bunch, but still, not a starting goaltender in the NHL. - signed with NJD So, I was chatting up a buddy of mine the other day talking about how signing Rolly was a great move after all the chaos that they had in net last year. He said, "they're gonna sign another goaltender." All matter-o-factly. I laughed and argued that now that they had inked Munroe to a two way deal, they could now start Rolly at the beginning of the year and have Rick backup and if he needed even more time, they could bring Munroe up to backup. Way better than last year, right? Well... looks like he was right. ...and honestly, do I blame them? NO. They have the money. Their defense hasn't been helping their goaltending keep them in games. Even with the Biron signing they still have almost 20.05 million in cap space, so even if they just want to hit the cap floor... they still have enough dough to sign a couple forwards and another D-man. The only thing that makes me worry... I do remember a certain goaltending carousel that occurred in Detroit a few years back. This situation may be different, because I know Rolly has been part of a tandem system and Biron, whether he wants to admit it or not, would probably flourish in a system like this. I still wonder how good ole' Ricky is taking this?? Maybe he's not going to be ready until LATE in the season? Maybe Garth doesn't trust him to be ready? Lots of questions around a guy who's supposed to be your franchise player, and your backbone. Oh, right... that's Tavares' job now.
P. Marlowe 748 Report post Posted July 23, 2009 Maybe they can dress the third goalie out as a defenseman with normal equipment and tell him to stay in front of the goalie and block shots. That way they might win some games 1-0 or 2-1.
e_prime 1,936 Report post Posted July 23, 2009 This just in: New York Islanders sign Manny Fernandez to a $1.2 million/1 yr. deal. Garth Snow sez, "I love me some goalies." I kid. I kid.
P. Marlowe 748 Report post Posted July 23, 2009 People are talking about how often Dipietro is injured. I just noticed that in the last five seasons he's played 50, 63, 62, 63 and 5 games. This means that he's been healthy for four seasons before the problems last season... 2007-08 was the first season for him as a number one when he had more losses than wins.
