Electrophile 3,554 Report post Posted August 20, 2009 its gonna have to b 4 now bt unless he puts up 25 fighting majors this thread isnt gonna die b 4? Yeesh. In any event, a couple other boards I post on that are sports-oriented are pretty much all in the same camp - this signing makes the Wings look bad, partly because of his reputation, partly because it's not immediately clear how effective he'll be. Someone actually said signing Bertuzzi "upped our douchebag quotient" and when someone else pointed out that the Wings were not known for having a douchebag quotient since we have pretty classy and well-spoken players, that person responded by saying "well, adding a douchebag to their roster when there weren't any before would up their douchebag quotient, now wouldn't it?" I'm not saying Holland should make choices based on what people say on the internet, but damn it I don't want people thinking the Red Wings are douchebags because of this guy. I don't care if people hate us because we're talented, always in the playoffs and a Cup threat and have players who sign here for less out of loyalty to the team and the city.....but I DO care if they think we're douchebag assholes because of 1 guy on the team. I won't boo him or hope he gets injured or anything like that but I'll be damned if I'm going to be happy he's here.

If he finishes the season with 15+ goals and 40+ points it's 1.5 million dollars well spent. He won't be getting 1st line ice time here like he did in Calgary, but I think he stands a good chance of hitting or topping 15 goals.

Electrophile 3,554 Report post Posted August 20, 2009 I'll be satisfied provided he doesn't break anyone's neck and doesn't cost us games. Otherwise, the thought of him on our team is the same as if it was Pronger, Lemieux and everyone else the majority of people can't stand.

That's like the combined yearly quota for this team.

Hockeytown0001 7,652 Report post Posted August 20, 2009 Agreed. And if you borderline body check someone he's not afraid to break your neck either! I wouldn't say that if you're referring to the Steve Moore hit on Naslund. It looked like a direct headshot, and Moore definately deserved a beatdown. A Vancouver player should have challenged him to a fight, done their business, and that would be it. Hopefully though, this nonsense of instigating fights after a CLEAN bodycheck needs to stop leagewide.

A Vancouver player did challenge Moore to a fight in the first period of the same game where Bertuzzi incident happened. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lwKPI83hK3c

What is it that you don't likt about the way hockey has always been played in the NHL? There are men who do not like being hit, and if you hit them, even legally, they will hurt you. See #9 in the rafters at the Joe. Personally, I liked the game more when you saw more people fighting after clean hits. You touch Yzerman? Here comes Probert. You touch Gretzky? Here comes Semenko. It adds an extra element to the game. Just because an action is allowed does not mean that it will be or should be without consequence. You wanna hit like Scott Stevens did? Fine. Be prepared to fight 140 or so times in your carreer like Scott Stevens was.

I wouldn't spend too much time stressing over what random people in the world that you will never meet think of a sports team that you cheer for. Especially when you have 0 control of the outcome of results and rosters, this is a game and it's meant for entertainment.

GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted August 20, 2009 That's the kind of hockey I grew up watching I find it rather odd when people say that they're appalled at the notion of players having to defend themselves after a big hit (clean, or dirty).......I'm guessing they must've started watching hockey 4 years ago. Or it seemed like during the playoffs, every time some player from the opposing team started a scrum after the whistle, some posters here would automatically refer to that player as dirty or to that team as goonish. As if pushing after a whistle makes a team dirty. Some posters on LGW don't seem to realize that fighting is allowed in hockey, and it's probably because they exclusively watch the Wings and no one else.
