Aussie_Wing 354 Report post Posted September 20, 2009 Article Williams, 25, and Newbury, 27, signed one-year, two-way deals in July. If they don’t make the team, they will head to AHL affiliate Grand Rapids, if they clear waivers. Whatever happens, they believe this organization can advance their careers. Am I wrong, or isn't the whole point of a two way contract to ensure that a play can be sent to the AHL without having to clear waivers? Article written by Ansar Khan, a really knowledgeable guy, who's in the wrong here? They'll be great additions to the Griffins that's for sure.

Aussie_Wing 354 Report post Posted September 20, 2009 Two way contracts mean that there is a difference in pay depending where you play. And that they can be sent down to the AHL without running the risk of being claimed by another team...?
Heroes of Hockeytown 694 Report post Posted September 20, 2009 And that they can be sent down to the AHL without running the risk of being claimed by another team...? No. Waiver rules depend on the player's age, when they first signed an NHL contract, stuff like that. Two-way contract simply changes a player's salary based on where he is. uk_redwing 495 Report post Posted September 20, 2009 It appears theres a "handful" of players competing for that last roster spot. Could one be Jamie Tardif....
MacK_Attack 108 Report post Posted September 20, 2009 Hmmm well okay then, lets just hope neither are claimed, Williams in particular. Williams cleared waivers at least half a dozen times with the Leafs. He'll clear.
Buppy 1,720 Report post Posted September 20, 2009 A two-way contract does make a player exempt from recall waivers (assuming the minor league salary is less than $110,000 [maybe higher now]), but not regular waivers. Players are more likely to be claimed on recall waivers, since the claiming team only has to pay half the salary. A lot of players that would pass regular waivers would get taken on recall. Lamothe 5 Report post Posted September 20, 2009 I'm hoping Tardif or Newbury. Bring on the sandpaper. My guess is it'll be Newbury or Williams, though I'd love to see Tardif up there. I think Newbury has a slight advantage over Williams because his checking and defensive game is better, and William's sick shot but lacking defensive skills don't exactly fit on a 4th line made up of defensive forwards and checkers. Newbury, overall, might be a bit more suitable for the 4th line until Helm returns. Williams could provide an offensive edge, but I'd be a little leary of putting him in with Drapes, Maltby or Eaves. I just think Newbury would fit better.

Lamothe 5 Report post Posted September 20, 2009 I would be willing to bet that Abs will be taking Helms spot until he's healthy again. Only if he is played over Maltby / Draper / Eaves. Holland and Babs said they won't use Abby unless he's playing, so he won't fill the 13th spot on the Wings at any point. They don't want to stop his development. P. Marlowe 748 Report post Posted September 20, 2009 Do they need to call anyone up? 12 forwards make a playing roster. CBA has many detailed rules, but if I've understood something right, then not calling an extra forward up would save Wings some cap space for later use. Extra cap space helps when Wings want to put Lilja back to the roster.
