CanadaBoy 151 Report post Posted October 4, 2009 18. Detroit Red Wings After purchasing the Detroit Falcons in 1932, James Norris renamed the team after the “Winged Wheelers,†the nickname of the Montreal Hockey Club for which he once played. Norris chose a winged wheel as the team’s logo, a nod to Detroit’s growing reputation as the heart of the automobile industry. http://www.mentalfloss.com/blogs/archives/36114
edicius 3,269 Report post Posted October 4, 2009 I caught that the other day on Mental Floss too (think I found the site initially from a Fark link) and found it quite interesting. Especially seeing what some of the newer teams COULD have been with those "Name Our Team" contests.
cusimano_brothers 1,655 Report post Posted October 4, 2009 The Club kept the original nickname it had when it was in Victoria, BC. Prior to the 1930-31 season, the Detroit newspapers thought that a new nickname would change the fortunes of the Club; in their first four seasons, they had a record of 64W-87L-15T. All of the daily papers in Detroit ran the contest at the same time. "Falcons" was the winner, beating out the likes of "Trojans", "Wanderers" and "Magnetos". This nickname stayed for two seasons when Mr. Norris bought the franchise and changed it for the final time.

VM1138 1,921 Report post Posted October 5, 2009 (edited) The New Jersey Meadowlanders. Wow. Naming contests are stupid. I remember when the Saginaw Spirit were named that way (or was it their mascot was designed by fans?) I couldn't believe that name. Now I guess over time it's grown on me, but naming a sports team seems to be almost as difficult as putting a competent team on the ice. Wow! The San Jose Rubber Puckies. That has a nice ring to it, doesn't it? Edited October 5, 2009 by VM1138
