Idea about Helm and Kindl

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

Now Darren Helm has looked a little off kilter with no training camp...

And Lebda and Meech have both been ATROCIOUS

So...Why not give Helm a weekend in Grand Rapids for conditioning (he is still a free pass to GR) and in that weekend use the roster spot Helm frees up to try Kindl in the NHL for a few games...

if Kindl looks out of place then you send him back when you recall Helm...if he looks better then Lebda or Meech you waive one of them to make room for Helm's recall...

Any thoughts???

Kindl makes more than the others. You would have to send Helm down AND trade Lebda to do this, or swap Abdelkader for Kindl and have a ridiculous amount of defensemen on the roster.

If we had Franzen, yes, but with him on LTIR I think we have the cap space, no?

Actually, I really like this idea. I know it's sad but I only realised Helm wasn't playing tonight about 10 minutes into the 3rd period. He's been pretty invisible to start the season and I'm sure the injury he suffered in camp has had something to do with that. As you said he can still be sent to GR without having to clear waivers and although he might not like it, it might be beneficial to him. I think Abdelkader needs to be sent down also, have him see top line minutes in Grand Rapids and play in all situations down there.

I've been waiting years for Kindl to make his Red Wings debut, I can't wait until it finally happens.

I guess they could play Meech as a forward, but given we're scratching two forwards a night as it is probably not the greatest idea.

Yea, with Franzen out we can do anything with the minor league guys. I like this idea, Helm's been ok, but not great, and Lebda and Meech are pylons, Kindl has some upside, see if he has something, 3 years ago he almost made the team out of camp and now I'm reading he's as lukewarm game to game as a guy just out of junior, s*** or get off the pot. And yes, that was a huge run-on.

Actually, that is probably accurate. I have been making that mistake recently as I have not had the opportunity to watch games recently nor get online much aside from the Colorado game the other day and a few minutes here and there, respectively.

But with regard to the cap, it allows the team to have a player on the roster in that player's spot until that player returns, and the team is allowed to exceed the cap by that player's salary cap hit for the duration of the LTIR period based on the replacement player's salary. For example, the Wings' roster, before injuries, would have been:

F: Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Franzen, Filppula, Cleary, Holmstrom, Draper, Bertuzzi, Ja.Williams, Maltby, Leino, Helm

D: Lidstrom, Rafalski, Stuart, Kronwall, Lilja, Ericsson, Lebda

G: Osgood, Howard

Note: When I say "cap space" this includes LTIR cap relief and not actual cap space.

This is a 21-man roster that leaves a mere $13k in cap space. But with Lilja on LTIR, suddenly the Wings had $1.263 in cap space. Meech is added to the roster to finish out the defense, dropping it down to $780k. Eaves makes another $500k, dropping to $280k. And we have a roster with 13F-7D-2G and $280k in cap space.

But then Helm was injured, putting the Wings at 12 forwards and $880k cap space. This was resolved by adding Justin Abdelkader to the roster, which dropped the Wings to $30k in cap space and a 13-7-2 roster.

Abdelkader was slated to return to Grand Rapids on October 8th, and Brad May was signed for $500k. This would have put the Wings at $380 in open space. However, Franzen was injured the next night and Abdelkader stayed up, with the Wings instead now having about $3.480m in open cap space and a 13-7-2 roster.

Later, Helm returned from injury. So the Wings now have about $2.9m in cap space with a 14-7-2 roster. Franzen and Lilja are a combined $5.2m, so either they will have to both miss a significant chunk of the season, significant player moves will have to be made, or both once those players return from injury. We can already expect to see the $500 cap hit of either Eaves or May removed at forward, possibly even both, as well as most likely the $650 cap hit of Lebda.

I like this idea. Lebda and Meech both need a kick in the ass. Why not see how Kindl can do, and give him a little more experience.

I think Abdelkader needs to be sent down to play 20 mins a night on the first line. When is this going to happen??

Yes, but until Franzen is back the Wings have the flexibility to add anyone from GR they see fit...so why not take advantage of it and see if Kindl would do better then Lebda or Meech, then if he does, there are no quams about lettting Lebda walk at the end of the year when he is a UFA

I tend to agree with you here, and think that with that scenario they give Eaves an actual chance to do something...He won't get rolling one game every 3-4 nights...

Then maybe you send Abdelkader down when Helm is back and leae Kindl up for a while if he played well.
