When it comes to goalies I say burn thru 'em like cord wood. The reason being that so very few of them are on top of their game for more that a 3 - 5 years or so. Goalies are notoriously streaky, and there is not a one I would give more than a 5 year contract ever.

I absolutely agree. Goalies make me nervous. There are no big-names like a Hasek, Roy or Brodeur in the league. Well...Brodeur is but he's not the same as he's been I don't think.

Even though many have better reps than Osgood, I'd be very nervous about acquiring any of them. Who knows what day they decide to mentally collapse? They all seem to be hot one year and disappear the next.

How many "goalies of the future" has the league burned through?

Take Fleury, for instance. He's decent, but he's not elite. Yet he gets treated like he is. So many goalies get treated as elites when they're really quite average on good teams. Some would even point to Osgood as this.

I would say Luongo is probably the only reliable goalie in the league, and even he is questionable at times.

Mason might be the real deal but it's way too early to tell.

Probably the same way 90% of all the other NHL goalies did.

90% of all NHL goalies came from Grand Rapids, that's crazy, and we pick Howard out of all of them. Aside from the asinine comment, my point was how is Howard supposed to progress anymore than he already did in GR? Get shutouts every night? Not on that team. Let's face it, the future of the Wings is in trouble. They don't seem to have a good young goalie to fall back on and what about forwards? Filppula and Leino don't appear to be our offensive force of the future. Better hope they raise the salary cap.

You know what I meant. I knew the only way to save face would be to draw attention something as trivial as that.

I got to see McCollum play a few times in the OHL, he was VERY good at the junior level... his numbers show that. But he has performances in big games that make you wonder. Example #1... blowing a 3-0 lead against Canada.

#2

the loss to Slovakia in the quarter final in the same tournament.

#3

http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/story/2009...p-bra-wind.html

Holland, Draper, Yzerman, and a few others came to Windsor that night to watch McCollum, and the Spits shelled him.

I still believe he can get himself into a #1 role here, but his track record in games that matter has to make the organization a little uneasy.

My point exactly. Obviously we cant write him off for these performances in big games but it shows at least that hes probably not near ready for the NHL .

I thought the discusion was about the goaltending future of the Wings, not immaturely attacking posters. You are obviously superior to me in your posting prowess because I clearly do not have as much time on my hands as you do. Good day sir.

Immaturely attacking posters. The harshest word I used was "trivial". In a reply to a post that called my comment "assinine".

And I'm immature huh? Sorry 'bout that.

Great, let's call up Larson and McCollum and give them a lookie for 5-6 games.

Send Ozzie and Howard down to Grand Rapids.

maybe im just young in my years,

but ive never heard of an NHL team sending down their starting goalie and his back-up for two goalies in the AHL...

and what would it benefit Osgood to play in the AHL other than a rehab assignment?

Clearly, it's silly to compare a goalie with zero NHL experience with either Fleury or Mason (or any other NHL netminder), I don't think an honest comparison was intended in either case.

It's funny though, you always hear about young players being brought in too early and getting ruined that way (see: Lions quarterbacks) but then you also hear about players being left in the minors too long and getting ruined THAT way. It's all 20/20 hindsight, it's so hard to tell how either kind of treatment will affect an individual.

I'm a firm believer in letting that 3 Year Entry Level deal play out than after that's done make a decision from there. A lot of factors come into play about how a player develops. You have to give a player enough time to get built up and get some confidence but you can't wait too long or they get to used to playing at that level and when it's time to come up they are no wheres near ready. You just have to know where that fine line is.
