Hockeytown0001 7,652 Report post Posted November 3, 2009 The best national announcers IMO are Dave Straider, Ken Daniels, Joe Beninati (yes him) and Doc Emrick. Dunno why, but there's a natural likeablity factor with Doc, I just find it hard to dislike him.

Guest Shoreline Report post Posted November 3, 2009 (edited) Someone said it, CBC and TSN are biased towards the canadian teams for sure. Especially as you move down to not Hugson or Cole or Cuthbert. You can hear them sound almost sad when a non-canadian team scores on a canadian one. On VS and ESPN back in the day they got on player bandwagons but never noticed a bias where it seems they are routing for a team. That's more of a Canadian culture too -- Canada first. It's on display on Sportsnet and CBC as well, and Gord Miller, to me, is the best NHL announcer hands down. The Canadian thing seems about as evident as American broadcast NHL play-by-play/color-commentary from the NFL/MLB/NBA playbook and chit-chatting all the time while the puck is in play. Not much you can do about that. If you want another hilarious comparison -- many Wings fans over the years used to called Gary Thorne "thorgasm" (when he was with ESPN) because of another perceived bias by him and Clement toward the Avalanche. doc might favor eastern teams because most of them are a short DRIIIIIIIVE from each other So yesterday. Xitium 272 Report post Posted November 3, 2009 (edited) I hope your kidding about the Colorado play-by-play, that guy is a huge homer. I came here to say exactly this. The Colorado guy is 'holy crap" biased. In fact, i'm stunned that he was even brought up in thread about unbiased announcers. As for the question posed by the OP, I think its fine with Homer announcers. Love me some Ken and Mick/Murph! Edited November 3, 2009 by Xitium
Heroes of Hockeytown 694 Report post Posted November 3, 2009 (edited) I miss Gary Thorne and Bill Clement, for sure. They called most of the biggest games of my adolescence, and were damn good at it. Doc Emrick's shrill, screeching voice is no match for Gary's big, powerful tenor. Edited November 3, 2009 by Heroes of Hockeytown
hankzet40 233 Report post Posted November 4, 2009 (edited) Though I hate the Flames, their radio PBP guy Peter Maher is one of the best simply because he shows enthusiasm for both teams. Without the crowd, it'd be hard to tell who scored sometimes because he reacts the same way for both teams. Edited November 4, 2009 by hankzet40

SliderJeff 11 Report post Posted November 4, 2009 Gotta say that Strangis and Razor (Dallas Stars announcers) are my two favorite non-Detroit announcers out there. I'll always have a soft spot for Ken and Mickey... Murph... eh, not so much.
SliderJeff 11 Report post Posted November 4, 2009 Razor rules for the simple fact that his "word of the day toilet paper" that he busts out during telecasts helps increase my vocabulary.

dropkickshanahans 463 Report post Posted November 4, 2009 I hope your kidding about the Colorado play-by-play, that guy is a huge homer. Yes Columbus is bad too. For whatever reason my NHL centre ice always picks that broadcast for the Jackets games, same with the Penguins games its always FSN Pittsburgh and they also have a brutal announcer. Like I said I don't watch them full-game, just from what I've observed from the NHLVideo highlight replays. Of course I've never watched the highlight replays of the Avs vs. us, and if I did then Ken was doing the play-by-play, but I'll take your word for it. Well if you consider bias as the person showing major excitement for his team like Mike is, then I guess every other home commentator has bias too obviously. I was talking more of how much they show excitement and get you in the game. I don't mind the screaming and yelling because like I said, it gets me in the game. But what I consider distasteful bias would be like the Blue Jackets guy for example, whining and complaining about everything when it isn't going Columbus' way and just being a total butthurt homer. Reminds me of these boards sometimes... Kylee: Yeah I forgot about Eddie Olczyk, he did get on my nerves quite a bit during the Blackhawks series. I was talking about the other main guy though, he shows loud excitement for both sides, but his voice is annoying to me.
