FIBS 35 Report post Posted November 18, 2009 Not a good day if you're a Chicago Blackhawk fan. I wonder who they're going to push in the firesale? Hossa, Sharp, Buf, Versteeg and Bolland. The one line wonder in chi-town Good news for Red Wings fans Chicago was almost becoming a threat. Not so fast. There are still moves to be made...
cjm502 165 Report post Posted November 18, 2009 (edited) I dont think Keith signed, the only reported talks were with Kane and Toews. Nothing is official yet though, I could be wrong. Edited November 18, 2009 by cjm502
skyphoenix 153 Report post Posted November 18, 2009 If it is true, $6mil a year is what I expected Toews and Kane to get (or ask for) but already being against the salary cap ceiling, they will no doubt have to move some people at the end of this season and the rest of their team is not going to make much money. Toews: $6mil Kane: $6mil Hossa: $7.9mil Sharp: $4.1mil Campbell: $7.1mil Seabrook: $3.5mil Huet: $5.6mil Byfuglien: $3.0mil Kopecky: $1.2mil Sopel: $2.0mil Versteeg: $3.0mil Brouwer: $1.0mil Barker: $3.125 13 Players @ $54.525mil. Salary Cap @ $56.8mil. That's what I'm seeing using nhlnumbers.com adding in Toews and Kane at $6mil next season. Without Keith, they are already right against the cap with only 13 players. They are definitely going to have to move someone significant.
rage 24 Report post Posted November 18, 2009 What is Cam Barker's situation? His he still under contract next season or RFA?

Casey 145 Report post Posted November 18, 2009 hossa's cap hit is 5.275 mil Doesn't help much- Chicago is going to have to make some major moves or be a one-line team packed with AHLers for a while.
rage 24 Report post Posted November 18, 2009 Did Hossa sign a NTC? I don't think so. And I don't think Zetterberg or Franzen does either. You look at all the long contracts like those guys have and notice that they don't have NTC's, at least for the length of their deals. Maybe some have a NTC for the first few seasons kinda like Stuart does here in Detroit. But no way a GM gives them a NTC for a 20 year deal or whatever! I really wouldn't be surprised if they moved Hossa at some point in the not so distant future. I thought this from the begging. But that's just me. I'm thinking Gentleman's agreement was in play during Hossa's contract negotiations.
skyphoenix 153 Report post Posted November 18, 2009 If you go on nhlnumbers, they have Hossa at $7.9. Weird. I wouldn't mind trading for Hossa next season if they need to release some cap pressure

BlackhawksFan 4 Report post Posted November 18, 2009 All this talk, and nothing's even been announced yet! Even if KTK are signed, the work is not yet done. There's still this whole "salary cap" thing to take care of, but getting these three signed does take care of most of the work - everyone knows the numbers the Hawks have to work with. All this discussion is moot until the deals are actually finalized and terms are announced.

I wouldn't mind trading for Hossa next season if they need to release some cap pressure It's probably listed as $7.9 because his deal is front loaded so that what he's making this year. His overall cap hit though is in the $5 mil area like somebody mentioned.

I mean it's very interesting especially from a Detroit fan's perspective. These guys are our biggest division rival and they are about to lock up 3 of the biggest stars they have had in the last 15+ years?? It's not all worthless to talk about as you say, it's good conversation if you ask me (as long as we keep the taxi BS out of the conversation).
b-random 0 Report post Posted November 18, 2009 The Blackhawks signing 3 of the leagues top young players is not something to celebrate, no matter how much cap trouble it "appears" to put them in. I'm sure Stan Bowman isn't an idiot, and we know his brain trust (Scotty) definitely isn't. If Chicago wins the cup this season, which is VERY possible, the value of their players goes up, including their players with bad contracts (Huet, Campbell). Never underestimate the stupidity of GMs around the NHL, I sure some desperate team in need of a "puck moving defenseman" will take on Campbell's contract and if Huet can get a cup under his belt, his contract becomes a decent one for a lot of teams. The Hawks seem pretty dedicated to winning and until we see how this pans out, I'm gonna remain apprehensive.

I keep hearing all this doom and gloom about them, but yet I still have seen ways that they can sign all these important core players and still keep something going. I just think a lot of Wings' fans are just hoping for the worse (Chicago cap problems) but I am pretty sure that these GM's and Braintrusts get paid what they do for a reason. Unfortunately, the Hawks will find a way around all this. Let's just hope (from a Detroit's fans point of view) that they have to give up a lot of draft picks or something! Wombat 26 Report post Posted November 18, 2009 It'll be interesting what they do in terms of keeping these contracts compliant with the tagging rule (contracts signed to next year cannot exceed this current year's cap). From the reports, it sounds like they'll sign Kane/Toews, which will put them right up to the tagging rule limit, and wait on Keith. Another consideration is that Kane and Toews are currently on entry level contracts that have potential bonuses. I don't know what those bonuses are, but a team is allowed to go over the cap somewhat to pay bonuses. The amount they go over is then subtracted from next year's cap limit. It's more speculation, but Chicago could potentially have even less cap space to work with because of this. It'll be pretty easy for them to clear cap space. All they have to do is waive Campbell during the offseason. If no one picks him up (doubt they will), just send him to the minors. They still have to pay him, but there is no cap hit, so they can spend another $7+ million to fill out their roster. They are in fine shape and won't be a one-line team playing a bunch of "AHL scrubs".
dat's sick 1,002 Report post Posted November 18, 2009 I'd love to somehow be able to steal keith if they couldn't sign him. Just wishful thinking though. I hope the Hawks focus on keeping Keith and kinda "forget" about Hjalmarsson so the Wings can steal him... his favorite player growing up was Lidstrom, and I think if he got a season or two with him as his mentor he would turn into a fantastic d-man, not that he isn't already on his way to becoming one. beepbeep 3 Report post Posted November 18, 2009 I agreed with your post until I read the part in bold. I'm not saying he's a saint, but he got into an altercation while drunk. That doesn't make someone an *******. Drinking changes people; drunks love to fight. You could call him an idiot for drinking, but I'd reserve that for someone w/ a few more years experience (at life or drinking). They both were ASSHOLES to get so drunk that THEY (read that as TWO healthy young men) would attack someone THREE (61 years old) times their age over an insignificant amount of money.... If that's not an ******* then there is no such thing.
