Datsasuk 2 Report post Posted December 10, 2009 Yeah, I don't understand that either. An why Messier? He's a bone head.
toby91_ca 620 Report post Posted December 11, 2009 Not Yzerman because is busy with the Olympics. Yes, the Olympics will be over, but organization for the World Championships take a lot more preparation than just starting after the Olympics. It's always been a different guy in charge of both events. Yzerman got his start in the same role as Messier a few years ago, now he's getting a shot with the Olympics. I think there is 2 reasons why Messier: 1. This is something he's working towards, the same as Yzerman was. Messier was involved last year as a special observer and has been serving alongside Glen Sather with the Rangers getting his feet wet. 2. Probably most importantly, recruitment. It's not easy recruiting for the World Championships, especially in an Olympic year and the thoughts are likely that Messier will have sufficient pull with several players to convince them to come. This is why Hockey Canada has gotten guys like Gretzky and Yzerman involved over the past several years as well.
RedWingsRox 614 Report post Posted December 11, 2009 Mess ... whatever you do ... do NOT call Gretz to coach. Guy can't coach ... period. He's the statesman par excellence but don't put a tie on him and place him behind the bench. That is NOT his thing !!!

Phoenix has had some good teams, but they always were terrible under him. This year, they look pretty good, and he's not their coach...

That clears it all up, not being from Canada, but having a fan's interest in Stevie Y, I was curious if they did this often or not.
