canadian wings fan 305 Report post Posted December 21, 2009 We have injuries? I thought we brought in guys like Eaves, Miller, Abdelkader etc to be main point producers/ power play specialists.

Finnish Wing 110 Report post Posted December 21, 2009 I don't think Flip coming back will help us that much. He's a set up man and not a goal scorer. Right now, there's no one to set up. We won't become a decent team until mid January, and that's providing we have no more injuries. I just don't want this team in February or March having to make up a whole bunch of points, because it's hard to start clicking all of a sudden and passing teams by. Bottom line is that we can't have these stretches where we go several games without even getting a point. In today's NHL, points are awarded for pretty much everything. That's why there's so many teams now that crack 100 points every year. The main thing about Filppula coming back is that we can build a line around him. Hopefully we get more secondary scoring and Leino gets going as well.
thedisappearer 291 Report post Posted December 21, 2009 What do you mean, "wut"? It's true. While they're doing SOMETHING, they're not putting up numbers anywhere near what management hoped. Helm was supposed to be a 4th liner and Abs was supposed to stay in GR for the season. They have actually overproduced this year.
fixxxer 11 Report post Posted December 21, 2009 I'm wondering where people get this idea that when our injured players come back (most from a lengthy absence from the game) we'll suddenly become this power house team we used to be. Usually players coming back from injuries takes a while to get back their legs and scoring touch, and with how close players are getting back to the end of the season I'd be worried that even getting those players we need its going to take them awhile to get back to how they used to play. Of coarse they could be super human and come back and immediately make an impact and shoot up the standing in the last month or so of the season and do what the Blues did last year. One thing I'm glad for is the young talent we have coming up they have been impressive given the circumstances.

It may not be immediate, but adding Franzen, Zetterberg, Filpula, Kronwall, Ericsson, Williams, Cleary, etc *will* be an improvement over what we have now. Exactly. Even if they take some games to find their groove just having those guys out there is better than what they have now. Their 2nd pp unit doesn't have anyone left on it from the start of the year. Well maybe Leino. And including losing Sammy, Hudler and Hossa and the injuries the Wings have lost more than 200 goals from last season? Plus their payroll is now at like 33mil or something when you take out the injured guys salaries? Newburry was assigned to GR today so someone, Fil?, has to be coming back. Cause they weren't scratching anyone so if someone wasn't coming back they would be going with 19 players on Wednesday.
Hockeytown0001 7,652 Report post Posted December 21, 2009 Just to keep the good news coming... Ericsson has knee drained CHICAGO -- The initial estimate of Detroit Red Wings defenseman Jonathan Ericsson being out for two weeks appears overly optimistic. Ericsson, who a week ago sustained a deep bone bruise in his left knee and a strained calf muscle, had fluid from the knee drained and continues to limp around, unable to do much. "My whole leg from my knee down to my ankle is pretty swollen," Ericsson said. "I don't have that much motion right now. Got to work to get the swelling down and go from there." He said he'll likely have the knee drained again in the next couple of days. He doesn't consider this a setback, though. "Doctor told me it's a guess to say when we think you're going to be back; these things are so different from case to case,'' Ericsson said. "They said two-to-four weeks, probably." Sigh. StevieY9802 6 Report post Posted December 21, 2009 (edited) A ray of hope perhaps? I asked Bruce McLeod on twitter if someone was coming back but haven't heard anything. If there isn't then the Wings must want more challenges by playing with just 17 skaters. Bruce updated it: "Forward Kris Newbury has been assigned to Grand Rapids. Perhaps Valtteri Filppula is ready to return." Edited December 21, 2009 by StevieY9802
Frozen-Man 144 Report post Posted December 21, 2009 First off I would like to say that I have been really impressed with role guys stepping up. Eaves, Helm, Miller and Abby have all really risen to the occasion throughout. Ever Jankik and Meech have exceeded my expectations but after watching the Hawks game tonight (20/12), its become abundantly clear that our injuries have caught up to us. We simply do not have the depth at this point to rally. Osgood was weak tonight but in saying that, there were 4 odd man rushes and two breakaways and that cant happen. We lost that game on every level: outshot, outchanced and on faceoffs...every aspect of the Wings game looked vulnerable. I think we were able to still compete with Zetty in the lineup because we had a solid #1 line and a "decent" second line. A lot of these guys are not used to the intensity of the NHL. Its much faster, much more physical and a whole lot more demanding. How do we expect a guy like Eaves, who has been great, to play 8 minutes on the 3/4 line and then become a 20 minute guy on the second PP? Its too much to ask. Its not Eaves fault...or anyone elses...the guys are playing with a ton of heart. They are playing hard and hanging tough but they must be exhausted and it really showed tonight. Just wanting to know thoughts about how long we can stay close to a playoff spot with the roster we have. I am looking for Flip to be back but after that, its not until 2010 that we will see any of the other injured guys. Despite this, I have to admit that I have been proud of how the young guys responded but I wonder how long we can play with a team like like this? Thoughts? I don't think Flip coming back will help us that much. I agree we may not get much offensive uptick from him but I'm hoping he will continue to help our ever improving (well not so much last night) defense. We won't become a decent team until mid January, and that's providing we have no more injuries. True, but at least we'll have a genuine 2nd liner on our 2nd line, instead of a bunch of 4th liners. And even when he's back, Flips wrist will be quite weak, so don't be expecting him to be firing them in, top shelf (not that he ever did that before...) Zetterberg will be back very soon after, and then we'll have something resembling a proper 2nd line.
