miller76 463 Report post Posted January 18, 2010 link Mike and Marian Ilitch, owners of the Red Wings, have not renewed their lease at Joe Louis Arena beyond this season, and face more than $10 million in structural repair at the dilapidated arena this summer if the team is to play there next season. miller76 463 Report post Posted January 18, 2010 How much would it cost to create an ice rink in the Palace? It's got to be pricey. But cheaper then the 10 million dollar fix in an arena that they don't want to be in.
ruarc' 2 Report post Posted January 18, 2010 Absolutely nothing, a rink is already in place. Does anyone else miss the Vipers?
Dano33 41 Report post Posted January 18, 2010 Interesting... The article claims that the "Hockeytown atmosphere" could be lost if they move to the Palace for a while. I don't get it, why? Do many fans who attend really live that close to the Joe. I live in Oakland county and I don't see it as a burden to have to drive down there when I go to games. I don't think that would be an issue, or maybe there's something that I'm not getting.
Guest Howard He Do It?! Report post Posted January 18, 2010 (edited) Ugh...I hate the Palace. Those damn seats are the smallest I have ever sat in. Also, I would not want the Wings and the Pistons to share an arena. The ice quality in those shared arenas is not nearly as great as in arenas that do not share with another pro sports franchise. Rice 42 Report post Posted January 18, 2010 It would kind of suck seeing the Wings move to the Palace, albeit temporarily -- but I think it'd be worth it for a few seasons. They need a new arena.
wings1110 184 Report post Posted January 18, 2010 although the wings need a new arena i would not be in favor of sharing it with the pistons, or having their new arena be named after some company.
po-GoWings 1 Report post Posted January 18, 2010 the arena will be named after a company, thats just the way it is.

Although it has been nice to have our team to be a lone arena of not carrying a corporate partner in it's name. It's almost mandatory in this time to carry a partner, and chip in. If I am correct MSG is the only other arena to not be partnered up. But that is NY city. NY can survive, not so sure about Detroit in the long run.
wings1110 184 Report post Posted January 18, 2010 (edited) well they could use the corporate name "Olympia" after "Olympia Entertainment" , or call it "little ceasers palace" Edited January 18, 2010 by wings1110

Guest scottj Report post Posted January 18, 2010 why i don't want them to play at the palace: 1. I live in southgate (15 minutes away from joe) 2. My mom works at the Renaissance Center so I get free parking if i take the people mover there 3. traffic before a game sucks on the highway... ridiculous 4. parking blows huge cock 5. I like Detroit more than Auburn Hills (I would like to go to bars after a game once i turn 21 or canada until then... a lot easier in detroit) but they gotta do what they gotta do... at least it'll just be temporary i guess

A sponsor is huge for revenue which is why it is implemented in virtually every arena, stadium, ballpark, etc. It is possible to use the corporate name without it being so obvious (such as "Great American Ballpark" for the Cincinnati Reds). Z and D for the C 712 Report post Posted January 18, 2010 That article isn't just about the Wings playing at the palace (which would absolutely suck), but the wings and pistons sharing a new downtown arena as well. So they'd be sharing an Arena for a long time. God I hope that doesn't happen.
Jaymz99 2 Report post Posted January 18, 2010 As I am to understand, this is not a viable option for the Redwings and Olympia as it would alienate current season ticket holders due to the difference in location distance. A member of the Olympia staff recently said that they are close to a new short term 5 year deal with the city of Detroit that would allow for either renovations of the current Joe Louis or the construction of the new downtown arena. This was also confirmed by a season ticket holder board member. Take it for what it's worth until confirmed.
WizardOfOz30 1,886 Report post Posted January 18, 2010 I would hate to see them leave the Joe even though I'm sure it will happen soon enough. Of course this is all business and the Illitches have to do what's best for the team and them. There will be plenty of unhappy people no matter what happens. Echolalia 2,961 Report post Posted January 18, 2010 The only positive of the Wings playing at the Palace is less games being pushed to FSN+, of course by then I'll be in a market that provides FSN+ so its a moot point for me.
HanKarin40 7 Report post Posted January 18, 2010 Detroit Red Wings general manager Ken Holland scoffed at a Detroit News report suggesting the team is engaged in discussions with the Detroit Pistons about either relocating to The Palace of Auburn Hills next season or collaborating on the construction of a multi-purpose arena in downtown for both teams. http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/20...d_on_where.html
Donaldjr2448 43 Report post Posted January 18, 2010 The other thing that would stink about the Wings playing at the Palace is the fact they will lose 3,000 seats. The Palace only holds 17,000 and the Joe hold 20,066 (ok 3,066 seats lost). I guess on a positive more games will sell out. I don't know if I am in favor of the move, we would lose that feel that the Joe gives, can't really describe it unless you experience it! Plus, I enjoy Downtown Detroit and Auburn Hills is a joke anyway.

I wouldn't mind the Wings playing at the Palace for a few seasons, but ultimately the Wings and Pistons having to share a new arena in downtown Detroit would suck... I think that the Wings should get the new arena for themselves and the Pistons can stay at the Palace.... or play at Ford Field lol

I understand what it's like to be at the Joe, but if we are gunna pay to temporarily rennovate it before we build another place, why not just play somewhere that is already in good shape for sporting events.
