Hockeytown0001 7,652 Report post Posted January 18, 2010 (edited) The other thing that would stink about the Wings playing at the Palace is the fact they will lose 3,000 seats. The Palace only holds 17,000 and the Joe hold 20,066 (ok 3,066 seats lost). I guess on a positive more games will sell out. I don't know if I am in favor of the move, we would lose that feel that the Joe gives, can't really describe it unless you experience it! Plus, I enjoy Downtown Detroit and Auburn Hills is a joke anyway. EDIT: Nevermind. I forgot that the Palace would lose seats when configured for hockey, as it holds over 21 thousand for basketball. EDIT number 2: According to this the capacity for ice hockey games is 20,804 at the Palace. I understand what it's like to be at the Joe, but if we are gunna pay to temporarily rennovate it before we build another place, why not just play somewhere that is already in good shape for sporting events. I may have spoken too soon. lol Edited January 18, 2010 by Hockeytown0001
Hockeytown0001 7,652 Report post Posted January 18, 2010 DETROIT -- Detroit Red Wings general manager Ken Holland scoffed at a Detroit News report suggesting the team is engaged in discussions with the Detroit Pistons about either relocating to The Palace of Auburn Hills next season or collaborating on the construction of a multi-purpose arena in downtown for both teams. “I don't know anything about that,†Holland said three times to similar questions. The information in the report was attributed to unnamed sources but did not include quotes. Further, there were neither confirmations nor denials from Red Wings or Pistons officials regarding the rumors. The Red Wings still haven't renewed their lease agreement at Joe Louis Arena beyond the current season and might be forced to make as much as $10 million in structural repairs to the building, according to the News' report. It also suggested the Red Wings might be better off playing at Ford Field next season. In response to where the hockey team will play its home games in 2010-11, Holland didn't flinch. “Joe Louis Arena,†he said without hesitation. Thank God. The Red Wings playing at the Palace would be uglier than Nashville's old sweaters.
Trapt1307 81 Report post Posted January 18, 2010 Thank God. The Red Wings playing at the Palace would be uglier than Nashville's old sweaters. Just because Holland denied it, doesn't mean it's not true. How often do you hear about sports executives denying something and then it actually happens two weeks later? He's not going to say yes because it's likely still being worked on (if it is actually true). It makes a ton of sense. The Wings need a new arena, and partnering with the Pistons is probably the most realistic option. The Joe is a hole. It may have a ton of history, but it's a hole. I see what you're saying, but I still think that he means the Wings won't be going to the Palace. The report says that Holland didn't hesitate to name Joe Louis Arena as Detroit's arena for next season. I think had this been on the fence, he wouldn't have commented on it, or would have used different wording.

Jaymz99 2 Report post Posted January 18, 2010 When did you hear this? I would absolutely LOATHE seeing the Wings play at the Palace. Around New Years. I do not believe they are going anywhere other than Detroit.
Nic 59 Report post Posted January 18, 2010 Man oh man. The Wings at the Palace? NO thank you. I haven't been to the Palace in years, but the last time I went it was $15 just for parking alone. I shudder to think what it may be these days. Another downfall is that I personally boycott Ticketmaster and have for years. At the Joe box office you can get tickets to anything for face value. The Palace still charges all of Ticketjokester's fees (or did when I used to buy tickets there). 2 MAJOR reasons why I personally wouldn't ever go to a Wings game at the Palace. Also, I-75 traffic for any Palace event SUCKS. (I also live MUCH closer to the Palace than I do to downtown.) When someone said something about losing the feeling of the 'Hockeytown atmosphere', I agree. Being in the Joe with all the statues and photo pillars and all the banners in the rafters. All of the solely Wings decor in the Joe definitely helps the atmosphere.
Barrie 900 Report post Posted January 18, 2010 Interesting... The article claims that the "Hockeytown atmosphere" could be lost if they move to the Palace for a while. I don't get it, why? Do many fans who attend really live that close to the Joe. I live in Oakland county and I don't see it as a burden to have to drive down there when I go to games. I don't think that would be an issue, or maybe there's something that I'm not getting. Right. Moving to the Palace would probably only be a inconvenience for us Ontario Wings fans. Instead of a 5 minute drive to The Joe when we cross the border, it'll be 45 minutes to the Palace. When I'm at the Joe on February 13th I'll remember to take it all in because it maybe the last time I see the place. That's sad when I think about it. redwashington2000 42 Report post Posted January 18, 2010 Well, look at the Capitals they have to share Verizon Center with Wizards so what??? They almost lead the league in points, the ice quality is not a problem for them.
Jwo 7 Report post Posted January 18, 2010 (edited) Traffic was a nightmare to go for a Lions game when they use to play at the Silverdome on a work week night for Monday Night Football. The Palace is only up the road from there. Plus there is nothing around the Palace within walking distance like at Joe Louis Arena. At least you could walk to places to eat or visit in Downtown. Guest scottj Report post Posted January 18, 2010 I really need to go to a game now... i've only been to the joe twice and i barely remember the first time cause i was so young. the last time was new years eve, yeah, not the nicest place in the world but who the f*** cares? the seats were comfy... that's about all I'm worried about haha good point on how there's jack s*** around the palace... definitely gonna take away from the experience
XxGoWingsxX 0 Report post Posted January 18, 2010 It costs $15 to park in the Joe Louis garage. True, True BUT....At the joe you have many parking options if you don't mind taking the people mover for 50 cents. I usually park at greektown, play a few slots before the game and take the people mover. At most i will have spent 5 bucks and had the possibility of winning it back. Correction, there is nothing within a 20 mile radius of the palace lol. I live within that distance out in waterford. Unless you consider downtown pontiac which is only a few miles away, a place to hang out and find something to do after a game.....people will just be forced to turn around and go home after. When I go to the joe, it's fun because it's in the city and you can make a night of it with all the fun stuff there is to do there. To me the city atmosphere is half the experience of going to a wings game.

Exactly, you have a lot of options downtown. I almost always park at greektown and either walk or take the people mover. $1 round trip beats the hell out of $15 to park. EDIT number 2: I may have spoken too soon. lol I applogize! Maybe the Palace was renovated, because I remember going to the Vipers Games and in the program it said it only held 17,000. Its possible the program did not include the suites. There will be more suites at the Palace than at the Joe, so that would be cool!! Not to mention I will be living in Grand Blanc by then, so who knows it may work out for me to get season tickets!! Its still wouldn't be the Joe or Downtown, I know that Downtown isn't great in the Winter (like someone said) but its still Detroit, our hometown. Maybe I'm just wierd! I would most definitely buy a 9 or 19 game package if this goes down. Then I'm the opposite. When I called on Friday about tickets to February 13th, the sales rep was telling me about a 3 game pack for those of us out of town, and I really like the idea, because The Joe is a 3 hour drive. If the Wings are at the Palace next year, I'll pass on the 3 game pack.
