Red Wings Fans in Virginia

Just making my own splash on the boards here. I've been following for a few months now and find this to be one of the better Red Wings forums. I've been a longtime Detroit fan now, ever since hockey first started coming on TV where I am from (Southside, Virginia) and I am now a diehard Wing fan. The only downside to where I live (Blacksburg for school) is that its under the Comcast viewing area and I'm stuck with Crapitals games all the time. I usually watch Wings games online but I am looking for fans in Virginia for potential game watch parties and rounds of beers.

I live in Blacksburg but am currently working in Richmond, VA on assistantship. If anyone around here is a Wings fan and is looking for any type of game watch getups at local bars- I'm your man.

I'd hate to see one of the worse forums. :) Welcome and enjoy! So let me get this straight. You started watching hockey on TV and graviated to the Wings and became a fan? No connection to Detroit or Michigan right? That's great! Can you tell us why the Wings? What about them made you like them over all the other teams?

Yeah, not initial connection to Detroit or Michigan. I grew up in a rural area and the first times I ever got to watch hockey came in middle school and Detroit was always playing on Saturday. My friends and I would watch the games then emulate our favorite players on this old dead-end street. I always loved the blue-collar grit of guys like Darren McCarty, Brendan Shanahan, Kirk Maltby, and Kris Draper. Steve Yzerman was someone I instantly idolized for not just his skill but his leadership and being the premiere example of what a classy professional was all about.

I guess it was the style of play, the history and dedication of the fans (I grew up a Virginia Tech fan and have long admired how Wings fans made the Joe like a college football atmosphere) and the blue-collar grit of those guys. I've been hooked ever since. Its truly the only pro team I even follow in any professional sport.

I thought I was the only person in this state that liked hockey. I live in Hampton, so probably a no go on the party get togethers.

However, I'm from Lapeer Michigan, I'm not a native Virginian.

In the Hampton Roads area as well. Do you catch any of the Nofolk Admirals games? Originally from Flint so I have been a Red wings fan for a long time. Still have a lot of family in Michigan. Need to make a trip up to see the Wings at the Joe before it is gone.

I'm from the newport news area. Die hard fan here. Actually just took a train up to DC to see the wings play the caps last night. Great experience

Well, in Blacksburg there are a decent number of hockey fans. The problem is 90% of them are Capitals fans from northern va-dc and 100% of those fans weren't even aware Washington had a team before Ovechkin was drafted yet they still think they are "America's" team.

I'm one of the N. VA Wings fans. I was at the Caps/Wings game Tuesday night as well. I tend to watch the games via NHL Center Ice on Directv. Every other year or so i make a pilgramage to Detroit to visit some cousins and the Joe.

The Wings get semi close to this area again in April when they play the Flyers. i'm thinking of making the drive to Philly then for a weekend to see them.

I inherited the Wings. I grew up in So. Cal to parents who were born and raised in Plymouth (Dad) and Wayne (Mom). It was nice when Gretzky was traded to the Kings but I already was engrained in the ways of the winged wheel by then.
