Modano?

Before I saw Brett Hull play with the team, I thought trading for him was wasting money on a team that was already very capable of scoring goals. Did not review that gut feeling because Stanley Cup > all.

This year goal scoring is a serious problem, so I think getting Modano would be great because I think he could add lift on a team with less pressure to be the top scoring guy. D and Z are both expected to produce now and in the future. Modano is a clutch scorer and he's not a lazy skater even when he doesn't score - I don't think the Dallas crowds appreciate what they've had, but all those chances Bert gets and doesn't finish while D and Z are tied up by defenders would get put away by Modano. Franzen and Holmstrom will come back eventually, too, though.

I've thought searching for another Konstantinov to complement Lidstrom would be a high priority for a long time, but Detroit seems to be the team that players who know they will be taking a pay cut on their next contract go to. I really don't like the "Last Stop Before Retirement" trend that nets us the highest average age in the NHL but for Modano I would make an exception this year, plus he is from Michigan and will still get his retirement honors in Dallas. Otherwise I would say put the moves off until next season and get a young, but tested, player like Letang in Pittsburgh.

I don't see any pressure really on Modano to be the top scoring guy in Dallas, there are several other guys that are expected to carry that load these days and Brad Richards is doing his part fairly well. I'm almost thinking there might be a bit more pressure on him if he were to come to Detroit, especially because of the current lack of scoring here. Dallas has actually been scoring more than Detroit this year, their problems are elsewhere.

Edit: just checked stats, I guess I haven't been keeping a close enough eye on this, I didn't reallize that Detroit's offense is currently sitting DEAD LAST in the entire NHL. Granted, there are a few teams in the same neiborhood in terms of goals scored, but to be sitting in 30th right now is ugly.

Modano is no Yzerman. Great player, one of the great Americans to ever play, but no Yzerman.

yeah he hasn't been the face of the stars franchise for 15+ years or anything

Modano's played his whole career with the North Stars/Stars organization and he's won his cup, he's not going to ask for a trade.

According to the paper, however, the Stars would approach Modano and see if he'd be interested in moving before completing any trade.

"Oh man, that would be a tough call," Modano told the Journal.

"What I've enjoyed is being with one team. There's been tons of transition and turnover here, and we're still hanging around. That's been a real joy for me to see that from start to finish. It's been a fun ride, good, bad, tons of experiences. To go somewhere else and play for a month and a half ... I don't know if I want to do that. If I was at that point where I hadn't won (like Ray Bourque in Boston, going to Colorado), I'd seriously think about it, but ..."

That doesn't exactly sound like him promising to stay put.

it would be interesting... And, I bet he would consider coming Detroit (hypothetically) if he were to be traded, being his home town and everything. He could add another solid scorer to the roster, even though he doesn't put up the numbers he used to... Modano is/was clutch, but I am not sure how much I would give up for him when it came down to it. He will stay a star though, which is how it should be imo.

Agreed... I think they'd be crazy and it'd be a poor move as a franchise to trade the face of their organization for over 15 years, but if they're going to be stupid, I wouldn't be opposed to Detroit being the benefactor... I think it would be the most beneficial to Helm to play alongside and learn from him...

even with that said, I don't know who I'd want out to add him and don't think I'd WANT it to happen, but I'd still smile if it did...

If we can get him similar the Stuart deal (2nd + 4th pick) and it's cap possible, you have a perfect third line center so Helm can stay with Drapes and Eaves on the fourth line. I'd do it in a second.

that's kinda how I look at it...

What I was referring to was overall. Modano is like Dallas's Yzerman, but doesn't mean as much to the organization as Yzerman did to Detroit.

Really, I'm not sure about that. Yzerman was definately the better player, but that doesn't necessarily matter when considering how much a guy means to an organization. Maybe Modano means more to Dallas simply because they haven't had the same level of talent in their organization as Detroit? - just a way of looking at it.

To be honest, I never followed Minnesota or Dallas all that closely, so I'm not sure how much he means to that organization or not, but looking at it purely from what I know, he's been there his whole career (20 years) and he's by far the franchise's leading scorer.

That's really what I was referring to. But what I meant was that I don't think he'll be remembered as the greatest captain in modern NHL history.

It could also allow us to put Filpula up on the 2nd line with Zetterberg and Franzen. Modano would be able to handle the third line with Williams and Cleary... that would make for some great depth

That's the way I'm looking at it - it would essentially give you 3 lines that are a solid scoring threat and a 4th that wreaks havoc on teams and wears them down and can STILL score as well...
