GMRwings1983 8,794 Report post Posted February 3, 2010 First, has anyone ever seen a diving penalty called without a penalty also being called on the other player? I personally haven't. Second, is it just me, or is the number of diving penalties being called this season significantly down? A few years ago, they called diving quite a bit, but I haven't seen it called once this season in any of the games I've watched.

mmamolo 287 Report post Posted February 3, 2010 What about the Burrows fiasco from a little while back. He got a diving penalty without a call the other way. At least, that's what I remember But ya, you dont see it too often
GMRwings1983 8,794 Report post Posted February 3, 2010 So did they make an emphasis at their league meetings to call less diving penalties? If they did, I guess that goes in line with them wanting more powerplays, because divings offset the powerplays, but I don't remember any such thing being made official to everyone. Guest micah Report post Posted February 3, 2010 First, has anyone ever seen a diving penalty called without a penalty also being called on the other player? I personally haven't. Yes - but not often enough. Second, is it just me, or is the number of diving penalties being called this season significantly down? A few years ago, they called diving quite a bit, but I haven't seen it called once this season in any of the games I've watched. Seems to me diving calls are down too - though I have not noticed any reduction in diving. Personally, I'd like to see diving punished with 2, 5 and a game. I consider it about as gentlemanly as hairpulling or headbutting - but way less entertaining to watch.

GMRwings1983 8,794 Report post Posted February 3, 2010 Nice video. I wonder if they gave Avery a double minor for diving on that play?
CenterIce 83 Report post Posted February 3, 2010 The only time they call diving penalties is when they have one of their meetings and decide to put emphasis on it. There are a lot of diving calls that should be made, but in like a lot of situations, the ref is usually seeing something out the corner of his eye or from across the ice. So, when they see someone go down, the figure that the other guy must have just hooked him. Usually, when they call the diving penalty. The other team get a penalty for something, too. FinWing 26 Report post Posted February 3, 2010 I think it's retarded to call both tripping and diving on the same play, it should be either or.
egroen 384 Report post Posted February 3, 2010 Post-lockout refs were calling diving more and the league was reviewing plays and assessing fines for diving (and publishing it) -- the NHLPA had a major cow over this and made a stink -- as a result, diving has been called less and they no longer review plays to assess fines. hooon 1,089 Report post Posted February 3, 2010 Not sure if the number of dives being called is down... haven't been watching many Pens games this season. Its rare to see the diving penalty called without another 2 minute minor on the other guy. I know its been talked about, but this still makes absolutely no sense to me. Its one or the other, it cannot be both. This is so beyond obvious to me, I can't believe this is STILL how it works. Even announcers and analysts go crazy about this rule. Thanks for clearing that up. It's very unfortunate they did that.

If you trip a player, that should be two. If you're tripped and you make a big show of flopping to the ice in dramatic fashion instead of getting back into the play asap, that should be two too. NeverForgetMac25 483 Report post Posted February 3, 2010 I think it's retarded to call both tripping and diving on the same play, it should be either or. While I understand your logic, there are instances where both should be called. For example: a player is called for tripping, and then the player that was tripped over-embellishes the penalty. In that case, both should be called IMHO.
