eva unit zero 271 Report post Posted February 14, 2010 I appreciate Matlbys hustle every night. Him and Draper are always the first ones on the ice at the beginning of the periods. They have served us well for many many years. With the contracts coming to an end I believe Maltby will probably go after this year but would love to see otherwise. Same with Draper next season. Too many people have this out with the old mentality on the LGW boards. Maybe when their jobs are taken by a half cost grad student they will think otherwise. The big difference is the "out with the old" mentality you are criticizing is people who want Maltby gone because he's a late 30s player who has become a part-time player and is no more effective at what he does that six or seven other guys in the system if not ten. The job analogy doesn't even work; you know why? If Maltby weren't able to find an NHL contract this coming summer, and retired, he has more than enough money to live the rest of his life in luxury. Most of us don't make enough to live even a week in luxury without significantly planning ahead and saving money. A lot of us can't even afford to save money for a vacation at all because we are barely scraping by. And you are sitting here, basically wanting us to feel sorry for Maltby because people think he should be gone. I think you should stop posting while high. Leadzedder 4 Report post Posted February 14, 2010 We're coming to an end of an era.... Lidstrom, Osgood, Draper, Holmstrom, Maltby. All important core pieces of the success we've enjoyed the last decade. Fortunately (and maybe luckily (hitting the jackpot with Dats and Zett)) we'll continue to enjoy success for many years. Ozzie and Draper have 1 more year left and will be on the team next year. The others are without a contract. Lidstrom is still Lidstromish. Holmstrom is still Holmstromish. Maltby is still Maltbyish. What I hope happens is they collectively decide to all go one more year. Go out as a group. Tell the media about it, make a big deal about it. Do it on the cheap. One more run for the cup. And if there's any players on the team that can't get up giving 100% for trying to get these guys a last cup...... punch them in the face. So, yeah. I hope Maltby comes back one more. He may see his fair share of press box but who cares. He'll be a wing and be ready when called upon.
RedWings Gone Wild 6 Report post Posted February 15, 2010 Maltby is like the relative that overstays his visit, but no one in the family has the heart to tell him to leave. Holland and company have known for many years that he was no longer useful, yet they've kept him around waiting for him to decide when to leave. They don't have the guts to tell him otherwise. He's been pretty bad since the lockout, but in his defense he was playing well (by his standards) this year.

The fact of the matter is, there's only so many players and only so much money to work with. Keeping guys around for one last victory lap is just poor business. FunkedUp 29 Report post Posted February 15, 2010 I could see Lidstrom, Holmstrom, and Maltby (13th forward) getting 1 year deals. Then after next seaon Lidstrom, Homer, Maltby, Draper, and Ozzy all retire.

Buppy 1,720 Report post Posted February 15, 2010 So we can endure yet another year of barely making / not making the playoffs??? The fact of the matter is, there's only so many players and only so much money to work with. Keeping guys around for one last victory lap is just poor business. If you think Maltby is the reason we are struggling this year, you have some real problems. As to the topic, we could feasibly have a need for a minimum wage 13th forward next season, and Maltby would fill that role about as well as any other options we'll likely have. It could also depend on what Homer does. Not sure we would have a spot for both of them, but maybe. Persoanlly, I think Homer will decide to retire. He's made a few comments suggesting that he's getting sick of the punishment he takes. Either way, our bottom 6 has been fine this season, and certainly will be again next year. We just need to get our top 6 working, and our defense/goaltending consistent.

clutchngrab 12 Report post Posted February 15, 2010 Another yesterday vs. tomorrow thread. OK, I'll bite. Maltby => gold watch and lovely retirement party with 1990's slide show. Guy was a great grinder once, but 35+ grinders are usually...meh. Grinding is a young man's sport. Hell, look at how much more effective Helm, Miller, Eaves, and even Abbie are now. Thanks for the memories Malts.
