In bold are players I wouldn't mind seeing here^^^

Unfortunately most are probably to pricy for the Wings.

Lombardi would be a great pickup, especially if we don't re-sign Bertuzzi, but he will likely get a much higher offer from another team with more cap space, Nystrom or Asham would be nice either way, and affordable too.

Torres and Comrie are way out of our price range, Nolan is too old, Higgins and Tanguay are overrated, do not want.

This is one of the thinnest UFA crops in a long time, but guess who is RFA? Kyle Quincey. Git'r'dun Kenny.

How about Artyukhin for the 3rd/4th line, the guy's huge, moves pretty good for a big man, has decent hands and fights pretty well for a Euro (look up his fight against Chara), plus after having a disappointing year and getting traded at the deadline, we might be able to get him for less than his 1M cap hit from last year.

This is what we have signed so far:

FORWARDS

Pavel Datsyuk ($6.700m) / Henrik Zetterberg ($6.083m) / Johan Franzen ($3.955m)

Valtteri Filppula ($3.000m) / Jiri Hudler ($2.875m) / Daniel Cleary ($2.800m)

Tomas Holmstrom ($1.875m) / Kris Draper ($1.583m) / Mattias Ritola ($0.517m)

DEFENSEMEN

Nicklas Lidstrom ($6.200m) / Brian Rafalski ($6.000m)

Brad Stuart ($3.750m) / Niklas Kronwall ($3.000m)

Jonathan Ericsson ($0.900m) / Jakub Kindl ($0.883m)

GOALTENDERS

Chris Osgood ($1.417m) / Jimmy Howard ($0.717m)

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS

(these totals are compiled using the bonus cushion)

ROSTER: 17; CAP: $56.8m; PAYROLL: $52.255m; CAP ROOM: $4.545m BONUSES: $0.000m

Need 4 forwards and one defenseman, with room for one additional player if we can afford it. (I included Ritola, though I don't think he is necessarily a lock for a roster spot. You might say Kindl isn't a lock either, but he'd probably have to have an extraordinarily terrible camp to lose a spot.)

We have $4.545m + whatever the cap does. I've heard $900k, 'slight increase', 'about a million', 'around $1.2m', and $2m, so it's probably safe to assume it will go up some.

We have the following players we may be interested in bringing back:

FORWARDS

* Todd Bertuzzi UFA($1.500m) / * Justin Abdelkader RFA($0.850m) / * Darren Helm RFA($0.599m)

* Drew Miller RFA($0.525m) / * Patrick Eaves RFA($0.500m)

DEFENSEMEN

* Andreas Lilja UFA($1.250m) / * Derek Meech RFA($0.483m)

We don't have roster spots for all of them, so at least 2 will be gone. Helm and Abby aren't going anywhere. They'll probably cost anywhere from $1.7-2.1m. So most likely something like $3.345-4.845 left over for 3 or 4 players. I think we need someone other than Meech on defense, and we'll have to spend in the neighborhood of $1.5m to get someone halfway reliable. Then assuming we bring back one of Eaves or Miller (or some new UFA) for $750-ish, the most we're probably looking at is around $2.5m to fill out the last forward spot (or a forward + a 23rd player).

That certainly takes Lombardi off the list. Quite possibly everyone aside from Asham & Nystrom. No chance really of getting Bert AND another skilled forward.

Higgins might be interesting. Couple poor years in a row (scoring-wise), so he might come cheap. Pretty good on the PK, hits a fair amount, and definitely has some skill hiding somewhere. Not sure I want another 'recovery' project though.

Your numbers are last seasons' salaries for those players. All five of those RFAs will get qualifying offers.

This means the following offers (rounded up to nearest thousand) must be made to retain rights:

C Abdelkader $893k

C Helm $659k

W Miller $578k

W Eaves $550k

D Meech $536k

That's a total of $3.216m that must be offered to our RFAs. Leaving $1.329m under this year's cap, plus whatever the cap increase is. That also brings the Wings to 13-7-2, meaning whatever remains under the cap can be used for Bertuzzi or someone else.

But as Holland has said, he plans to take care of the RFAs ahead of Bertuzzi. Meaning Bertuzzi is likely not going to actually have a contract until the cap is known, and may not be in Detroit at all.

I don't think Kenny is going to sign a 4th liner. I have a feeling that we'll see Hudler and Bert on the third line, with the newly signed player (possibly Tanguay, since he is a left wing?). I believe Tanguay had a 81 point season before. He also has won a cup, and had like 21 points during the cup run (with the Avs). So I think he would possibly be a good addition to the third line. Kenny could probably get him for cheap too.

Edit: grammer

Yes, I know those are last year's numbers. They were not the numbers I used in my calculations.

Also, qualifying offers are not contracts. They are for retaining RFA rights. Those numbers for Helm, Eaves, and Miller are pretty low. Holland has said he wants Bert back, and is looking for something for the 4th line. Then there's the possibility of another 3rd pair defensemen (either Lilja or someone similar).

That gives us a total of 25 players for 23 spots. It is far from certain that all our RFAs will be with the team next season. Helm and Abby are the only two I'm positive of.

I think 18 spots are set. The last 4 or 5 will be some combination of Bert, Eaves, Miller, Ritola, UFA 4th liner, Meech, UFA d-man. Whatever the best combination we can get of those guys for ~$4-5 million.
