Best string of first-round picks -- Pittsburgh Penguins, 2000-06

The core of the Penguins' revival has come in a seven-year string of first-rounders that's hard to beat. In a seven-year stretch, the Penguins grabbed Sidney Crosby (2005) and Evgeni Malkin (2004), both of whom already have won multiple trophies, as well as Cup-winning goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury (2003), shut-down center Jordan Staal (2006) and rugged defenseman Brooks Orpik (2000). They also picked defenseman Ryan Whitney (2002) and center Colby Armstrong (2001), a solid NHL player who was a key chip in the trade for Marian Hossa that helped get the Penguins to the 2008 Final before winning the Cup a year later.

I laughed hard at these... so many no brainer choices here that it makes me almost sick to my stomach.

Imagine if we had gotten Bure, as rumors have suggested we wanted to. He would have been taken in place of Shawn McCosh in the 5th round.

So we could of had a Fedorov-Bure pairing.

While we're at it, lets say we took Jagr instead of Keith P. and retained Adam Oates. Easily would have been the most dominant roster of all time.

Another reason why salary cap is a good thing. Just adds a new dimension to the sport. Even though Red Wings were probably one of those team who were even better without the cap, I just think it's stupid you've got an edge if you have more money than other organization. And that's mainly because most of the money have come outside hockey.
