I don't know how back-ended it is, but Chara will be 41 at the end of it. Any chance the NHL looks at this one?

I gotta imagine there's no way the NHL touches this one, it's an extension to play for a team he's already on and it looks as though he actually gave them a pretty hefty "home-town" discount... he could have gotten upwards of 8 or 9 a year on the open market this summer...

GREAT signing for Boston by the way

I don't know about $8-9M at his age. I could maybe see Weber or Doughty getting that much, especially if the cap goes up again, but that's pretty high for a defenseman in his mid-30s, even if he is one of the best.

This averages out to $6.5 (under the new rules, only the first 6 years of this will count in determining the average, so the actual cap hit could be between $5.6-7.5), which still makes him one of the highest paid defensemen in the league. It's a nice deal for Boston, but it's also plenty fair for Chara. With the new rules for long-term deals, I doubt he could have gotten much more in free agency, at least not for more than a year or two.

Funny note, depending on what happens with Weber and Doughty (or other FA idiocy I guess), Brian Campbell could end up having the highest cap hit among defensemen in the league. (He's currently 2nd to Chara, which is already hilarious.)
