Completely agree with all of this. Was really pumped when we drafted him, but ever since he's been steadily going down in my books. The bottom line is that he hsn't produced anywhere near as much offence as he was expected to, now that can be put down to injuries/a defensive team, but still, it's time he started producing again. I hope getting this contract out of the way can allow him to settle down and start producing more consistently.

I am hoping he will develop an offensive touch in GR next season with a more offensive team. On the low end, hopefully he can become a good 3rd/4th line NHL guy. However, these are some of the more difficult positions to crack in the Wings' system depending on the year.

I'm actually a bit surprised by this signing, with all the issues he had last season. He's notched 11 points in 13 games, so he's on the right track. Good for him.

Why are you surprised? After next year we'd lose his rights, we can still send him to juniors next season if we wanted.

I feel like a tool right now for not understanding something that is probably really basic:

The Wings drafted him. Why are we just now signing him to a contract? Wouldn't he have been on a contract as somebody who was drafted? Did we lose him somewhere and are now getting him back? Is there a different type of contract for certain players and that is what was signed?

I'm sure this is all very simple to understand but I just seem to be missing a large piece or 3 of the puzzle somewhere.
