Doc Holliday 1,888 Report post Posted February 17, 2011 http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/dregerreport/ 1) Failing a complete meltdown - which has scuttled at least one previous trade involving the Toronto Maple Leafs, Tomas Kaberle, and the Boston Bruins - there's strong belief that Kaberle will be traded to Boston. It's unlikely the deal gets done today, but sources say it's close and say the deal doesn't hinge on Kaberle signing an extension with the Bruins. The dynamics of the trade haven't been entirely worked out and sources indicate the Leafs are waiting for Boston to put the final pieces of the puzzle in place - a process which may take another day or two to finalize. Cap space is somewhat of an issue for the Bruins - who are believed to be working on a secondary trade (not involving Toronto) to create some cap flexibility. With the addition of Chris Kelly, Blake Wheeler has become a likely target - primarily because of his $2.2 million salary. Wheeler is a versatile forward who's comfortable playing both the wing and at centre and is believed to be drawing interest from other teams. Stay tuned. I would prefer Burke to get nothing out of Kaberle, but it doesn't seem like the asking price is too high at the moment anyway.

henrik40 76 Report post Posted February 17, 2011 And Lebrun and Burnside have a debate on espn today about Boston being the only realistic destination for Brad Richards. Something tells me that won't happen unless Boston is shipping ALOT to Dallas or to Toronto in a possible Kaberle deal.

Last I checked they were still in the playoff race, currently 7th in the west? That just confused me, is there more to this story I don't know?

Bruins are right up near the cap limit...I'm sure salary will be dumped to make room for Kaberle, as for Brad Richards, that has come and gone. They would be giving up a s*** load for him...the Bruisn aren't the New York Yankees of the NHL were they are going to mortgage away their future or up and coming prospects. Guest Howard He Do It?! Report post Posted February 17, 2011 The report last night was that the deal was hung up because the Bruins were only offering picks in return. Adding Blake Wheeler may get the deal done.
hooon 1,089 Report post Posted February 17, 2011 Is Dallas really thinking about dealing Richards??? Last I checked they were still in the playoff race, currently 7th in the west? That just confused me, is there more to this story I don't know? Dallas has gone 2-7-1 over their last 10 and are on a three game losing streak. With the West being as close as it is, they are quickly becoming one of the teams most likely to miss out. Seems like in the span of about a week they went from division leader to potential deadline seller. No complaints here, I don't mind seeing the Stars miss out, so long as it doesn't make room for the Hawks.
ogreslayer 1,069 Report post Posted February 17, 2011 Is Burke secretly the GM for Boston? First the Leafs get the short end of the hockey stick on the Phil Kessel trade & now he's probably going to get the same trading Kaberle off to Beantown. Burkie might just go down in history as the greatest GM the Bruins ever had.

e_prime 1,936 Report post Posted February 17, 2011 (edited) Bruins 'close' to getting Kaberle, sending Stuart to Blackhawks Was just going to post that link! Makes sense. Wheeler and pick to Toronto for Kaberle. Stuart to Chi for a pick. Frees up the cap space needed. They upgrade their puck movement. That pick won't be to high going to TOR. Stuart is expendable and the pick they get probably makes up for the one they give away. EXCEPT: Blackhawks can't afford Stuart. Couple players will have to go back down. ogreslayer 1,069 Report post Posted February 17, 2011 Can't link it since I'm at work, but Bob McKenzie tweeted that his take is that Wheeler's not off to Toronto in the trade but would likely be dealt someone else if the Kaberle deal's done.

Guest Crymson Report post Posted February 17, 2011 It's ironic that Kaberle's far less talented brother has won a Cup already--and scored the Cup-winning goal, no less--while Kaberle is still perpetually stuck in purgatory.
HankthaTank 1,100 Report post Posted February 17, 2011 Sounds like a pretty win-win for all sides involved with this one. Wheeler is a legit power forward in the league who could really prove himself in Toronto (or be cursed). Stuart gives Chicago's D a bump and Kaberle obviously will make Boston's PP that much better. Should be interesting to see how this unfolds.

Ah Frankie,..good memories. He managed to capture lighting in a bottle once for the 06 season and then dropped off the face of the earth, it was tough to watch. Yellowknife Redwing 57 Report post Posted February 17, 2011 This is really disheartening for me. I've always had a soft spot for the Leafs and I think Kaberle is a tremendous player. I always wanted to see him in a Wings uniform and I fear that I'm going to end up hating him now that he's a Bruin. There might be 2 or 3 teams that I would have preferred less than Boston. Guest Crymson Report post Posted February 17, 2011 (edited) Ah Frankie,..good memories. He managed to capture lighting in a bottle once for the 06 season and then dropped off the face of the earth, it was tough to watch. While in Miami for Passover in '07, my cousin and I decided to go watch the Panthers play the Hurricanes (I wore my Red Wings jersey, of course). I'm not exaggerating when I say that Kaberle may have played the worst game I'd seen a defenseman play in years. He gave the puck away repeatedly and could not, for the life of him, hold it in at the blue line. However, Belfour took the cake for goat of the game. Now, the Panthers absolutely needed to win the game in order to avoid statistical elimination from the playoff race. In OT, a Panthers player was called for a penalty, and Belfour apparently believed that it had been drawn by a dive; as such, he went on this funny dance across the ice, jumping up and down, in order to taunt the refs. This resulted in a 5 on 3 for Carolina instead of a 4 on 3, and Florida ended up out of playoff contention. It was funny. Also amusing at that game was seeing a Panthers fan wearing a Bertuzzi jersey; Bertuzzi had played all of eight games for the Panthers, in sum, and had been traded to the Wings a few weeks earlier. I considered taunting her, but I decided against it Edited February 17, 2011 by Crymson

First the Leafs get the short end of the hockey stick on the Phil Kessel trade & now he's probably going to get the same trading Kaberle off to Beantown. Burkie might just go down in history as the greatest GM the Bruins ever had. Brian Burke is such a great GM that the Hartford Whalers hired him as their GM for 1 year before they fired him...he was such a great GM in Vancouver that they choose not to renew his contract...the ONLY bright spot on his resume is winning the Stanley Cup with the Ducks in the 2006-2007 season...and now he is the GM with the Leafs since November 2008 and they can't seem to buy a playoff spot since he came their and brought Ron Wilson. Leafs are 6-3-1 in their last 10 and won 2 in a row...look out Carolina!!! LOL. Peter Chiarelli, in my opinion, is a much better GM than Burke...Peter has done an outstanding job of turning our team around and getting players, after all, he did land Chara a big fish in the free agent market after the 2005-2006 (only the third Slovak-born NHL player to become a team captain). Peter is no slouch...atleast we have a few players we can dump to free up $3.7mil...hell lol we'll send you guys Mark Recchi so you can boast that you have another "oldest" player on your team. My thoughts exactly, the odds are more likely of him being a rental in Boston than anything with the players they have coming up on FA that they need to retain and with the up and coming D-men they have in their system... Burke needs to use Vancouver's poor luck to his advantage right now and unload that Lebda contract for ANYTHING, even if that is a 7th rd pick in 2025, gets rid of dead money and Van might actually make that deal right now with how thin they are... If Burke can pull off moving Lebda, I'd give the guy a lot more credit that I have in the past. (Still shake my head over the fact that he was signed in the first place.) That being said, I don't think VAN is *that* desperate.
