TAMPA, Fla. -- The Detroit Red Wings have signed forward Jan Mursak to a two-year contract extension.

Mursak made a good impression on the club during a 17-game stint in Detroit this season as injury replacement. He skated fast and hard, went to the net and battled in the high-traffic areas. He he had one goal, no assists and a minus-3 rating.

He was reassigned to the Grand Rapids Griffins earlier this week, after missing a week with bruised toes.

The Red Wings selected Mursak in the sixth round of the 2006 entry draft (182nd overall). He is one of only two Slovenian-born players to skate in the NHL (Los Angeles Kings center Anze Kopitar is the other).

Mursak, 23, has 11 goals and 25 points in 36 games with the Griffins. He is out of minor-league options next season, so he must earn a spot on the NHL roster

Yeah, this kid is crazy fast. I wish he could have scored a bit more while up with the big club, but he had a lot of chances and easily could have had a few more points. He always played with fire and speed, reminded me a bit of Helm a couple years ago.

I am shocked!!!! J/k.

Technically he could start the season in GRap next season as long as he assigned prior to the waiver wire starting, except if the Wings wanted to call him up he'd have to pass through re-entry waivers. Just technicalities :P

Completely agree. Look at Helm's stats with his second stint with Detroit, 16 games, 1 goal. -7. Mursal 17 games, 1 goal, -3. Both showed tremendous speed, grit, and created some chances.

Helm's developing into a guy who can score a dozen goals, and put up maybe 35 points. I see Mursak with better hands, and I think it's not unrealistic to think he could be a 20-20 player in this league in a few years.

Awesome

Aussiewing will be happy too

You bet!

Do we have the next gen grind line of Abdelkader-Helm-Mursak? :yowza:
