Buliding a team

We were having a discussion on the Pens forum --- and for some reason some of our uneducated fans are under the impression that Toews is a top 2-3 pick if you're building a team.

http://www.letsgopens.com/scripts/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=52853

Personally, I couldn't disagree more. I think the only reason the Hawks won the cup was because they had an All-Star team. I don't think it has anything to do with Toews skill or supposed outstanding leadership. (Look at them this year)

Somebody on our Pens board responds with saying Toews has skill comprable to Datsyuk and Zetterberg. I think that's a joke in itself. It just shows you what marketing can do for you --- Because Toews is on commercials etc people seem to think this kid is elite and one of the best players in the league.

IMO --- Toews will never be half the player Datsyuk and Zetterberg are -- And even though they are both in their 30's I would still take them to start a team over Toews.

Just wanted to see what other people thought?

Toews is a top player in the NHL, but he's no Crosby/Ovechkin/Datsyuk/Sedin, ect. It'll take a few more years for that. You'd be nuts to not want him on your team and he should certainly be considered Chicago's MVP, but as far as being one of the top 3 players to build a team around, that's pre-mature.

Toews is absolutely a great leader. For any of your non-Canadians around here that may have not noticed the impact that he had on the Canadian Olympic squad you would have seen him completely take control on and off the ice while he was surrounded by some of the game's best players and leaders. That being said, skill-wise there are a bunch of players that are currently better. But that doesnt mean you can't build teams around one of the best natural leaders in the NHL.

My guys under 30 only.

1: Crosby

2: Parise

3: Toews

4: Getzlaf

5: Eric Staal

6: Corey Perry

7: Rick Nash

8: Jeff Carter

9: Stamkos

10: Duncan Keith

11: Jeff Skinner

12: Malkin

Wow. I'd rate Stamkos and Keith a little higher than that. I wouldn't build a team around Perry even if he has scored 50 goals this year.

Toews wouldn't be top 3 but he sure as hell would be top 10!

1. Datsyuk, hey I may be a little biased here, but this guy does a ton on offense and is the best Defensive forward in the game.

2. Crosby, I am not the biggest Crosby fan, some of his personality traits (that I see on the ice). But there is no denying his skill level, and he is starting to get better on the defensive side.

3. Duncan Keith, Going to be a beast for years to come

4. Ovechkin, I really think he will grow into the C, just as soon as he progresses on the D.

5. Weber, Going to be very very good for many years to come, very good D-man.

6. Zetterberg, call me a homer again, but second best Defensive forward, when healthy is dynamic, and a very good leader.

7. Doughty, again going to be a great D man for years to come.

8. Parise, All around solid game, leader.

9. Toews, Very good all around game, will get better on D, will get more dynamic on O.

10. Lucic, I just really like this kid, his hands are really starting to develop nicely, another player who will get better in his own zone with time.

Of course, this list is loaded with my personal opinion!

There's no denying the skill that these players have but it takes more than skill to build a team around a player. I can't understand how Jeff Carter is ranked that high on this list. This guy, despite his skill set, is not all he's cracked up to be.

Who? As ridiculous as he was playing during the first half of the season, he's been that cold of late.

He has 7 less points than last year with 2 games to go. You get cold quick.

I would start a team with Toews for sure. that being said, here's the guys i'd take before Toews:

Z and Dats (no brainer), Crosby and Stamkos.

This is where i'd enter Toews. Great 2 way player that can "hold on to the puck" like Z. has a cup as hawks captain. every team that wins the cup has a great supporting cast. there was alot more to the 80's oilers than just Gretzky.

After Toews the list opens up with lots of guys....OV, Nash, Getzlaf, Shea Weber, Sedin twins, Eric Staal...the list goes on, but at the end of the day, i'd take Toews atleast in the top 10 in the NHL. and basing this years performance isn't entirely fair to Toews as the hawks roster was completely raped. you don't lose versteeg, byufglien, ladd, madden, niemi, etc...without it affecting the chemistry and the team record. it takes time to figure things out and since the all-star break, the hawks have been one of the hottest teams in the NHL. and Toews has been great.

32 goals, 44 assists for 76 pts, +23 and only 26 PIM (10th in NHL scoring)

that sounds like the kind of player I want to start my team with. and he keeps getting better every year. he has a very mature game that forgive me for saying, reminds me of 2-way forward Steve Yzerman.

Agreed. He's the antithesis of leadership. He's an arrogant little ***** who happens to have talent.
