The Toronto Maple Leafs recalled defenceman Keith Aulie from the American Hockey League on Tuesday after placing Carl Gunnarsson on injured reserve.

Gunnarsson crashed into the boards during Monday's practice and suffered an ankle injury that will keep him out for at least seven days.

Boston Bruins forward Rich Peverley will be out 4-6 weeks after suffering a third degree MCL sprain in his right knee in Wednesday's game against the Montreal Canadiens.

The Chicago Blackhawks will be shorthanded for this weekend's two-game West Coast trip.

Captain Jonathan Toews and defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson did not make the trip with teammates on the charter to Los Angeles on Friday and will not play in back-to-back games beginning Saturday evening against the Kings and concluding Sunday evening against the Ducks in Anaheim.

Toews has missed two consecutive games with an upper-body injury that could be the result of concussion symptoms. The captain was also in a minor traffic accident Thursday morning en route to the United Center.

The Vancouver Canucks have taken a step to clear some salary-cap room before Monday's NHL trade deadline.

The Canucks placed defenceman Keith Ballard on long-term injured reserve as he deals with a neck injury and concussion symptoms. A team spokesman confirmed the move Saturday, adding coach Alain Vigneault had also verified it.
