Kira 451 Report post Posted February 2, 2012 http://www.thehockeynews.com/articles/44513-Gordie-Howe-looks-to-raise-awareness-of-dementia-while-feeling-its-effects.html?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=thn_daily_20120202 I went through this with my father (Alzheimer's), and believe me, it isn't easy. It sounds like he's in good hands, but if you have ever been around this kind of disorder, you know that in time, it gets worse. All I can hope for, all we as fans can hope for, is that whatever can be done will be. You're in our thoughts and hearts, Mr. Hockey.
Esquire 324 Report post Posted February 2, 2012 My grandfather suffered from this before passing away. When this man passes away, I'm going to weep like an infant and throw elbows at anyone who dares tease me about it. All the best Mr. Hockey. We love you. 3 Gordie Howe hat trick, HankthaTank and 13dangledangle reacted to this
Din758 371 Report post Posted February 2, 2012 Ive never had a relationship with a Alzheimers or dementia patient, so I cant relate. I just know what I hear, and that its a horrible disease. Unfortunate for anybody go through.
Kira 451 Report post Posted February 2, 2012 It is hard to watch someone go through. I would not wish this on my worst enemy.
redwingfan19 293 Report post Posted February 2, 2012 My Grandmother went through dementia for about 7-8 years before she passed away. I could tell years ago that Gordie was showing signs of it but now I guess it is in full circle. Unfortunately it is only going to get worse from here as this is not a curable disease. My wishes go out to Mr. Hockey and the Howe family and I know Gordie is a tough SOB who isn't going to go out without a fight.
ChelisChick 174 Report post Posted February 2, 2012 My grandmother had the "sundown syndrome" type also. I'm glad his boys are taking such good care of him.

sleepwalker 512 Report post Posted February 2, 2012 Few sources saying Gordie has dementia. Surprised this hasnt made it on the site yet. I read multiple articles about this earlier, and the thing I got from them all was the reason they are going public is to clear the air and state on record that Gordie does NOT have dementia. Just look at the titles of the links right at the top of this web page: "Gordie Howe's son says Red WIngs great does NOT have dementia" "Red Wings legend Gordie Howe NOT suffering from dementia"
Drake_Marcus 890 Report post Posted February 3, 2012 Dementia is a terrible, terrible disease that is so damn hard for families. My heart goes out to the Howes.
Drake_Marcus 890 Report post Posted February 3, 2012 It's also worth noting that at Gordie's age memory's quite a common problem. I know it's just wishful thinking but hopefully his symptoms will continue to be limited to short-term memory issues.
HankthaTank 1,100 Report post Posted February 3, 2012 All the very best to #9, my father's favorite athlete so with him being such an important person in my life this in turn affects me too.
