Internet.Unknown 422 Report post Posted January 3, 2016 True. Our grit played a factor in the win over the Avs and to some extent the Caps. However, it was our speed that beat the Flyers in 97. It was our speed that gave us our record breaking regular season in 96. It was our speed that led us to the 95 Finals. Our 08 and 09 teams were all speed and they nearly won back to back Cups. I'm a little hesitant to give up speed for size. The 95 team was a disaster against the Devils and the whole city was complaining of too much Bob Errey. Tiny fast Wings couldn't compete with the punishment of Scott Stevens et al. There were more changes made to the team after 95 than you're crediting.
Internet.Unknown 422 Report post Posted January 3, 2016 Not every team had that amount of money to spend on players, and a lot of the big name guys came here to team up with the crazy amount of big named talent already on our team to win a cup. How would you know, you were in diapers back then. On a serious note, I just get tired of people (not you) blaming the lack of a salary cap on the Wings' past success. Yzerman, Fedorov, Lidstrom, Konstantinov, the Grind Line -- these core players were cultivated by the team, not mercenaries bought in to win a championship. The Wings became a winner because they sucked in the 80's and drafted well into the early 90's. Even Shanny coming to Detroit was the result of a 1st round pick. 1 jimmyemeryhunter reacted to this

The salary cap is the most significant thing to happen to the NHL since the implementation of the forward pass. Edited January 3, 2016 by Aethernum
Echolalia 2,961 Report post Posted January 3, 2016 Our coach plays 2 goalies. How can 1 of them be consistent? Howard is a huge brain fart on Holland. But the coach cant expose the GM and not play the guys he signs. Why not? Babcock benched Holland's signings on the regular and he ended up becoming one of the longest tenured coaches for one team of the modern era. Neither Babs nor Holland lost their heads for it during the multitude of times it happened in the past so it probably won't make a difference now. Besides, I think the organization values how deep the team goes in the playoffs above the efficacy of the salary cap dollars spent. It would behoove Holland and Blash to do whatever necessary to ensure a deep run, even if it means benching more expensive players for cheaper ones.
