Drew Miller re-signs... 1 year deal $1.025 million

Hate the Blackhawks, but when you look at how they've dealt with Shaw, Ladd, Leddy vs how Holland has dealt with Miller, Cleary, Helm you can tell why they're miles ahead of the Red Wings in roster management. They don't cling onto their homegrown talent unless they know they're worth keeping. Almost every roster decision they make is long term +EV. They look at the bigger picture. The Red Wings do not. Deals like this for Drew Miller might seem harmless for the 2017 squad, but it's a still a slightly -EV move the Hawks would never make because they will fight for every little advantage (every little scrap of cap space) they can get.

If Ken Holland had drafted Andrew Shaw, he'd extend him to the Abdelkader contract. But the Hawks are smart, they know that Shaw is nothing but an average player when they look at his peripherals (Corsi, scoring chance creation, primary points relative to team). Continuity is such an overrated concept.

Edit: And it's no coincidence that when Kenny chose Franzen over Hossa, the Wings and Hawks diverged in different paths.

If Miller doesn't perform they'll send him to the Rapids and be on the hook for 25k that's nothing.

When it comes to Shaw it's a great contract guy is pound for pound a pain to play against and will go to the net hard.He is going to block shots , hit people and do whatever it takes to help his team win. Such a versatile player who can also easily play top 6.
