Overrated Skills

What skill or trait do you think is most overrated in today’s game? Fighting? Faceoffs? Hits?

For me it’s stick handling. Remember how we were all supposed to be impressed when Jurco spun all around with the puck on YouTube? Or the popularity of “The Michigan”? People love when you can dink around with the puck but it doesn’t mean diddly.

Yet when Pavel stickhandled....

Sure, but he's the exception and not the rule. Way too many players spend a significant portion of their development learning how to dipsy doodle instead of check, or PK, or work on faceoffs, or whatever. I'd imagine because it's more fun, and it looks cooler. But unless you're a Pavel, or Kane, or someone like that, the chances of you stick handling around NHL defenders is basically zilch.

For sure.   Watching Carolina handle the Loafs last night was a prime example for you.   They made in tight stickhandling a moot point because of their forwards ability to play a physical game controlling the boards.   They scrum quite well while protecting the puck, then find their sniper who has found space for the inevitable pass from the boards.    Happened all night with these good scoring chances.

Yep, reminds me of this play from Seider's rookie season. Edvinsson is basically at that level now too. If you don't dump and chase or play give and go with a teammate you basically have no chance of getting past either of them. Certainly not by stickhandling.

Poor example. For everytime u post McD getting stopped dangling on a drive, you can post 10 more where he doesnt.

In general I somewhat disagree with the basis of the entire argument at hand. Dangling doesnt benefit most players. But it does absolutely benefit the elites ones. Because Its a secondary skill.

Skating will never be considered overrated because its so essential to the game. Its a primary base skill every player needs. Dangles arent. Plenty of players can hash out careers without basically ever attempting dangles.  But for a player like datsyuk or McD, dangles help take them from good to unreal.

It's is like saying air scoops are overrated because most cars dont need them. Youre absilutely right, an air scoop on a drew miller dodge chrystler is retarded. But on a Datsyukian Lambo its pratically necessary to cool the engine.

The inverse is hits. Is it overated? IMO probably more so. Why? Cause ever regard on the block can do it. Its also a secondary skill, but its way easier to run into someone than artfully dance around them. Which is why every 4th liner in the league is trained and able to do it. Hits also dont usually directly cause anything. Whereas dangles often lead directly to a scoring chance or goal.
