Happy with this signing. A lot better than some of the names being mentioned like Kraijcek, Schubert etc.

#2015809 Red Wings Making Play for Modano

Posted by Green Wing on 16 July 2010 - 11:11 AM

LeBrun just re-tweeted this from Dan Rosen at NHL.com.

I just spoke with Mike Babcock and he's convinced that Mike Modano will sign with the Red Wings, and play 2 years in Detroit.

Babcock said he met with Modano in Detroit earlier in the week and now believes it's just a matter of time before he signs, but...

He also said he's been wrong before, so it wouldn't shock him if he is again. He doesn't think we'll know until Aug. 1 at the earliest.

Babcock on Modano: "I look forward to him signing. I think that's inevitable. I think that's what is going to happen."

If the quotes are accurate, Babs seems sure of Modano signing. And for two years.

#2005642 FIFA World Cup 2010

Posted by Green Wing on 27 June 2010 - 03:17 PM

Another goal that shouldnt have counted in the Argentina game. The officiating in this World Cup had been horrendous. So many games have been decided by wrong-calls on huge game changing goals.

Germany was the better team, there's no doubt.... but anything can happen when a game is tied. The thing that gets me, is it would be so easy to impliment such a simple review system for goals. FIFA is one of the strangest leagues out there.

It's a joke sport, at the moment. I love the game, played it my whole life, but it's a complete joke with Sepp Blatter in charge. In tonight's Mexico v Argentina game, Argentina score an offside goal, and they show a replay in the stadium in seconds so that everybody can see that it should not count. But the officials, knowing that they're wrong, feel compelled to ignore it. "DURRR, we're not allowed to look at video technology! Sorry!" It's absolutely farcical.

It'll continue to be a joke sport until that odious, greedy cretin Blatter goes. (although they'll probably replace him with someone equally as bad). The only positive from these terrible decisions is that it might mean pressure for him to resign. After France hand-balled their way to the World Cup in the playoff against Ireland, everybody said they must introduce Video Technology before it ruins a major tournament. He ignored it. Hope he reaps what he has sown.

And people think Bettman and the NHL officiating is bad!

Riley Sheahan.

Pretty pleased about that.

#2000143 Wings sign Ilari Filppula 1yr/$500k

Posted by Green Wing on 16 June 2010 - 11:03 AM

In all honestly I don't get this signing. I understand that its Flip's big bro and all but we don't need another playmaker IMO...more of a Drake type or actual scorer. Unless they plan to use him once someone else moves along come 2012 season and if they can afford him by then.

It's primarily for Grand Rapids. If he impresses, it might be a different story, but he'll be in GR. It doesn't have an impact on the Wings prospective signing(s).

#2000020 Yzerman asks Wings for permission to speak with capologist Martin

Posted by Green Wing on 15 June 2010 - 06:08 PM

Not sure if this is posted elsewhere, but Martin has turned down Yzerman and Tampa Bay and is staying in Detroit as 'capologist'. Good news.

http://blog.mlive.co..._ryan_mart.html

Awesome news from the Free Press' Helene St. James: the Red Wings' quiet man in the front office, capologist and fantastic hockey executive Ryan Martin, has declined Steve Yzerman's offer to join the Tampa Bay Lightning:

June 15, Detroit Free Press: “I decided last night, and I talked to Steve last night and told him I decided to stay,” Martin said today. “It was a difficult decision but also a good decision.”

Martin, 40, has been with the Wings since 2005, when he was hired as their director of hockey operations, a title that encompasses making sure the Wings are salary-cap compliant. He is part of the team’s front-office brain trust, along with general manager Ken Holland and assistant general manager Jim Nill -- a group that, until last month, included Yzerman, who segued from retirement as a player into team vice presidency in 2006. Having spent four years side-by-side with Yzerman, Martin was Yzerman’s first choice to join him in Tampa Bay. Martin spent several weeks mulling his decision.

“It was an outstanding professional opportunity for me, but at the end of the day, weighing all the professional and personal aspects and the family situation, we felt Detroit a better situation,” he said. “My wife has a career here that she really enjoys. It was just a little bit better fit here.”

Pronger probably said to Burish at some stage "I eat pieces of s*** like you for breakfast."

#1995792 The right way to be a prospect of the Wings

Posted by Green Wing on 07 June 2010 - 11:04 AM

I remember hearing an interview with Tatar last season on the Griffins radio. Although his English wasn't fantastic, he came across as a real good kid with a great sense of humor. It was around the time of the Olympics, and they were asking him about the Slovakian players. He mentioned Chara, and said 'he's a little bit more higher than me, and a little bit more weigher'.

I know you can't tell much from a tiny snippet, but he struck me as having a good head on his shoulders and as someone who will make the best of his situation no matter what it is. I'd guess he'd be a hit with his teammates, too.

Really excited to see how he comes along.
