a million is actually more than sufficient for injury replacements.  Sure, most teams would like more than that for security but until last year a lot of teams carried a million or less in previous seasons.


Pronger's LTIR relief has no affect on the Weber deal.  


LTIR cap relief constraint is only for during the season.  It has nothing to do with the Weber deal.  Plus, Pronger is all but done.  He also will not officially retire until the duration of his contract is up.  The Flyers will gladly pay him the money so they can have the cap space.  Pronger's money will not affect their cap hit.

Also, the Flyers are cap compliant as of today WITH Pronger's money on the books.  Once they put Pronger on LTIR then they have plenty of room to re-sign Voracek, drop Lilja and be done.  

This Weber deal does NOT ensure the Flyers move a defenseman.  I'm not saying they won't do it but they definitely do not have to do it.  

Also, for those thinking PHI is going to be out of the Ryan sweepstakes I think you're mistaken.  Once Pronger is on LTIR PHi could use one of the d-men everyone is talking about and some of the depth at forward as pieces to get Ryan.

It sucks because it's true.  Holmgrem has proven that he is aggressive enough to do just as you said.

You can't possibly pay a player more than Weber will be making for the next few years. On top of that if he gets him, it also costs him 4 first round draft picks.

Weber is a great defenceman but he isn't the best player in the NHL

No one is saying he's the best player in the NHL, he's just one of the top three -- if not the best -- player at his position and he's now compensated as such. Regardless, the cost of successfully prying a player away via offer sheet -- and offer sheets for *any* players, for that matter -- is done via two ways: vast overpayment or handcuffing a franchise via poison pill(s).

I don't believe Weber is overpaid in this case over the term of the contract, but in order for the Flyers to even pry him from Nashville they had to put in a monster of a poison pill to the tune of $52 million in bonus money alone over the first four years that cannot be reduced by a new CBA-forced salary rollback.

That's $52 million over the first four years no matter what. Period. No way to get around that, have it reduced by 24% Rollback Part 2, etc., etc..

With the spate of Free Agents seemingly passing us by/the perceived inactivity by Holland RE: preparing for Lidstrom's departure, does anyone see Babcock walking? I doubt he does as he's been a big part of shaping this team and working with them to create pretty much HIS system here. But he's got to be pissed now. As far as I know from mainly rumour surrounding forums such as this one, he doesn't like it much when he says he needs a piece or two and the management say we're all good so can you see this, or another such situation soon, as being the final push towards the door?

He is probably the premier head coach in the league and could walk into any other team, so maybe he does soon?

Just what I happened to think of when I heard the Weber news, because if I'm pissed that we've once again missed out on a guy that was supposed to be at the top of our list, imagine how he feels having to coach...

Why would Babcock leave? Holland has given him or attempted to give him every single thing he asked for this offseason.

He wanted right handed shots, - he got 3 of them.
He wanted depth for the bottom 6 - he has depth in abundance.
he wanted to get bigger and faster. He got slightly bigger, but a ton faster

The only other thing he said they need was a winger for Pav, and the Wings are still waiting on both Doan and Semin.

Holland also attempted trades for Rick Nash (a favorite of Babcock's), and #1 defenceman in Yandle and Weber.

Babcock isn't some overreactive fan, he likely recognizes that you can't make everyone come to Detroit, or force teams to trade with you. I bet he's overly pleased with the effort Holland has put in to try and give him what he wants.

Most teams can't spend as much and ice a full roster of players, not to mention stay competitive.

Also, no way Parise and Suter command that much in free agency.

Perhaps a little. But not as much as you think.

And Parise and Suter may not command that much, but they sure as hell will be offered that much by at least a couple teams IMO. That's what happens when you mix a lot of desperate teams with a thin FA class.

Wonder what the response would be here if in fact Hank were moved?..IMHO outside of Dats, Lids, and Jimmy - anyone can be moved.

At work today a coworker forwarded me an email he received from a friend who apparently lives next to or near Ken Holland. No idea how reliable this is, but this person claims the Wings are about to trade Zetterberg to Florida for Stephen Weiss and a 2nd round draft pick.

Even though I doubt Hank will get moved - I for one don't understand the "minus ticks".

Lids needs to sign another extension just so we can hear him drop an F-bomb.

Mursak - Helm - Eaves

That's the best, most well rounded combination possible IMO.

I've been posting almost this exact lineup for months. The only difference being my choices to swap Franzen and Cleary, keeping the Cleary/Z/Hudler line going and also reuniting the Franzen/Abby/Bertuzzi line that seemed to work out pretty well at the end of last year.

no one has suggested that Eaves could be on the top 6. He has the wheels for Dats and also a great wrist shot to get some points, 25 goals in his 2 years with the Wings on mainly 3 and 4th line duties. Could be he may be promoted but then again that splits up a probable 4th line of some potential with Helm and Mursak.

I suggested Eaves as a possible linemate for Dats a year ago. I was laughed at by pretty much everyone with an "Eaves, huh? Sure, whatever." kind of reaction.

And furthermore, I was the first to suggest a Mursak/Helm/Eaves line as a potential for this year. Now everyone has it slated in as a given.

Very interesting that so many laugh at me for my posts and then re-post things I had previously stated as good ideas.

Oh really?  Last season while at home he gave up 1 goal on 6 shootout attempts. While on the road, he gave up only 1 goal on 11 attempts.

Ok..well we not getting jagr..who cares..sounds as tho eaves miller ericsson might be looking elsewhere..and alot of the bigger name free agents are being resigned by teams....what are the wings doing...i understand purple say we don't need offense but dats and hank cant do it all..if they healthy and the mule..well he never healthy...what's going on???

One of the guys that I think could add some size to the third line and who has an offensive upside is Scotty Upshall. The guy has been plagued by injuries so his market value is poor but he could be a diamond in the rough. He was the 6th overall pick and he kinda reminds me a bit of Cleary coming to the wings. Other guys i would like to see in the Winged wheel include WIZ, Kaberle, Jose Theodore (great tandam back there!) and Laich. These are all realistic picks...of course I would love to have Weber, Doughtey and Richards but that is not going to happen.

Kaberle? Really? You want a soft defenseman without defensive skill, one whom Leafs fans didn't even like? If you dislike Rafalski, then why would you want Kaberle? The latter is far worse defensively.
