Guest mindfly Report post Posted March 24, 2009 It just seems like more europeans are taking hometown discounts than north americans :S
toby91_ca 620 Report post Posted March 24, 2009 Not exactly fair comments considering Kesler is really just starting out in his career and hasn't really made much money yet. If you want to use the Wing's players as an example, which one of them have taken a home town discount at the point in their career that Kesler is currently in? eva unit zero 271 Report post Posted March 24, 2009 Be fair; Vancouver isn't Kesler's hometown, Livonia is. He should sign for the 1.35 I had slotted for Samuelsson as a hometown discount. /thread
Guest Shoreline Report post Posted March 24, 2009 (edited) I'm not quite sure how this can be taken out of context: That's what we need everybody to do," said Kesler. "If we're going to win the Cup, we need guys to take pay cuts. The way the salary cap is now, you really can't get what you're worth now if you want to win. Everybody in this locker room knows that and for us to be a great team going forward, we're going to have to take a pay cut." YoungGuns1340 1 Report post Posted March 24, 2009 When?? Lets see, he was underpaid for about 3-4 years, and then he took 6M per when he couldve gotten 7-8M per. The guy went from discount to discount.

Zetterberg might have been able to sign for $7-8 million a year, but not for 12 years, the length of the contract is why the cap hit is $6 million, also, he's at a totally different point in his career. When he signed his previous contract after only completing 2 seasons in teh NHL, I think he was in a more comparable position to Kesler and yes, today, he looks underpaid at $2.65 million per year, but when he signed that contract, a 4 year, $10.7 million contract was hardly a discount. I have to agree. Also, Kesler is actually my favorite player on the Canucks, but he's only now performing up to expectations or living up to/exceeding his worth. Not even long after his draft some six years ago, he signed between a 2 and 3 million dollar entry level contract. He underachieved his first few years, but lately has been a good value for the price of $1.75m. Logically, he can and probably should demand more now. Maybe his agent thought Kesler's obvious statement of people taking less could hurt his market value.
Slave 31 Report post Posted March 24, 2009 i would want more too if i was kesler, at least to stay in vancouver i mean why should he take a discount just so they can spend $10mil on sundin
VM1138 1,921 Report post Posted March 24, 2009 i would want more too if i was kesler, at least to stay in vancouver i mean why should he take a discount just so they can spend $10mil on sundin Exactly. Players only take hometown discounts if: A) THere is a winning program in place to buy into. B) There is a solid plan toward building a winning program to buy into. Clearly there is neither in Vancouver, or 80% of the league for that matter. I don't blame him.
OsGOD 3 Report post Posted March 24, 2009 awww s***... when i read HOMETOWN discount i thought this would be about... you know.... kesler in talks to COMING HOME?!?!?! not about his current place of employment. Hometown discount would only apply to Vancouver IF ON ONLY IF he wasn't born in Livonia, Michigan (backyard neighbor to the home of the Detroit Red Wings) ala Brian Rafalski or Darien Hatcher... Well s***... it would be awesome to have Ryan back HOME!
