He'll go to the Pens for cheap. He never wanted to leave, everybody there likes him, he'd fit right in with all the other cheap shot artists they have. I wouldn't want him with the Wings. Too slow, his shot is below average.

I'd like to have Marty for one year as a 1B next to Howard. But I think you're right, he probably wouldn't go for that and with Howard going into a contract year, he probably wouldn't like it either. But that would be a heck of an upgrade over MacDonald. lol

I wonder how much he's looking for. He won't get $5.2 mil again. Maybe he's leaning towards retirement.

If Holland can convince the Blackhawks to trade Chris Chelios to us, anything can happen. We gave them an "up and coming" defenseman in Anders Eriksson and a couple of first rounders. We can trick another division basement dweller.

Too bad realignment couldn't have helped out with that. Its good to see Holland being aggressive though. Asking about Nash leads me to believe he's looking to shake things up or make some serious upgrades to this team. Bringing in Nash, to me, would be like when we brought in Brendan Shanahan. He was a great goal scorer, in his prime and desperately wanted to play for a contender. I like to think it would have a similar effect on this team.

Sidney Crosby signs 12-year, $104.4M Contract, $8.7M/yr
xtrememachine1 replied to Tim.D's topic in General
I'm really surprised he didn't get some sort of raise. Will Malkin be content to play for the same wages after everything he's done since signing his last contract? -
LOL I love your overreactions. $9 mil to a defenseman that's never even been nominated for a Norris? That's a bit much. Every year at this time, people (fans, GMs, coaches, media, etc) get so wrapped up in doing whatever it takes to land the big name free agent that they forget the goal isn't to win free agency, its to win the Cup. Buffalo threw a ton of money around last year and the media praised their moves. Then they missed the playoffs. Throwing that much money at one player really isn't good for the team. Sure, you get the guy you need and you "win" free agency, but what happens if he pulls a Derian Hatcher and blows out his knee in the first month? Anyways, my point of posting in this thread was about Jay Bouwmeester being our Plan B should Suter not sign with the Wings for a reasonable amount. I remember a couple off seasons ago I made a case saying that Jay-Bo would be a nice fit for the Wings and quoted his Forecaster profile... Has incredible skating ability, a keen sense of when to join the rush, size and hockey smarts. A capable shutdown defender, he can log huge minutes. That seems like a good fit for here and at just $6.6 mil, less than the lowest amount we believe Suter can be signed for. Plan C should be Keith Yandle. Phoenix is having money problems and is shopping him around apparently. He's a $5.25 cap hit. So for $11.9 mil, we could have Jay-Bo and Yandle. Seems like a much better deal than Suter for $9 mil.

Red Wings OUT of bidding for D Justin Schultz
xtrememachine1 replied to redwingfan19's topic in General
I didn't really care either way if we got him or not. With 25+ other teams making him the same offer, I wasn't too hopeful. -

I don't really see this is being "dumb" because of his concussions. Sure they probably don't want to be paying someone $9 mil to sit in a dark room, but this really won't affect them cap wise. They can just put him on IR and that frees up that $9 mil. -
LOL If for no other reason, I want Doan here so we can use the Doan face year round. I can just see it now. Doan at his introductory press conference with Ken Holland, Mike Ilitch, wearing a Wings jersey and that face.

Doan is the exact type of player we need for the playoffs. Relentless, tough, passionate and will literally do whatever it takes to win. I'll take him and another forward over Parise.

$10 mil? How many Art Ross and Hart trophies has he won? Ridiculous. If he signs for that anywhere, that will kill whomever salary cap situation and make the team terrible. Which is why he won't sign for that. Just last year Brad Richards signed for less than $7 mil and he puts up a lot more points than Parise. He should be a $7-7.5 mil a year guy. Anything more is over payment and that franchise is screwing themselves.

Red Wings make contract offer to D Justin Schultz
xtrememachine1 replied to Tim.D's topic in General
Good lord, $8 mil for Parise. You know he only scored two more goals than Franzen and played in 5 more games. I like Parise a lot, but his drop in goals over the past few years make me pretty uneasy about handing him a $8 mil contract. I hope you were just using Edmonton as a "for instance". Edmonton's picked 1st overall in each of the last three years. No way, no how do they give up their first rounder and a third rounder to sign Quincey.- 294 replies

He'll get the Hall of Fame for sure, but he wasn't as impactful as the guys already hanging in the rafters.
-
Lots of upside and a couple years ago was over a point per game, but the injury history is a concern. I would like to see him here at a really reduced pay.

Red Wings make contract offer to D Justin Schultz
xtrememachine1 replied to Tim.D's topic in General
About Schultz, making him an offer isn't a big deal. He can only make so much as a rookie, so he'll get plenty of offers. Its nice that Holland is one of the GMs to make him one, but I have a feeling a lot of teams will and they'll all pretty much be the same. As for Quincey, I was watching the NHL Network last week and they were talking about Red Wings UFAs and agreed that a lot of defenseman don't develop until they're about 27, which Quincey is about to become. We gave up a first round pick to get this guy, we need to give him more than a couple months to show whether or not he was worth it. Quincey should be back at about the same price.- 294 replies

Here's the flip of this topic. Pens fans talking about us getting Parise and Suter... http://www.letsgopens.com/scripts/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=59084

Totally agree. I'd like to see them sign Suter and Ray Whitney or Shane Doan (although I doubt he'll ever leave that franchise). Or trade for Jarome Iginla. He's a $7 mil player now, but in the final year of his contract and at 35, he'll probably make less after when that deal expires. I also wonder if it would be a good idea to throw an offer sheet at Weber, IF we get Suter. At the very least it would scare the crap out of Nashville. lol

As someone mentioned in another post, they would be like the Blackhawks. All that money tied up in a few players, no depth on the 3rd or 4th lines.
-
I don't know how much Yandle would help us defensively, but look at the numbers he's putting up in Phoenix. Now imagine what his numbers would look like with talented forwards in front of him.
-
If Parise goes, that would suck, but I'd rather have Suter. He fills a critical need on our roster and he could give us a leg up next summer if/when Shea Weber becomes a UFA. Spend big on defensemen, sign a few forwards to fill in the holes there. Our style of play is and has always been dictated by the strength of our defense its important that gets built up again fast.

I don't know if its a good idea to be committing yourself to two more big long term deals and pressing right up against the cap when Crosby and Malkin's contracts are going to need extensions over the next couple years, not to mention they have a bunch of guys unsigned after next year.
-
I don't see the Pens having upgraded themselves by just acquiring Parise. They're defense was shredded in the playoffs and Fleury melted down. They need to improve on defense and losing Jordan Staal and Michalek doesn't look like improvement to me. Suter is their best option and unless he changes his mind about playing in the East, that isn't going to happen. Honestly, I could see the Pens getting a Ray Whitney and/or Shane Doan, maybe Michael Rozival or Matt Carle. The amount of free agents they have next year combined with the number of holes they have now on defense, I don't think blowing a ton of cap space on one player is a wise move.

Just got back from the draft. My son and I didn't get Stevie to autograph his birth certificate, but we got to see the Stanley Cup, had custom made Upper Deck cards of us and NHL posted our picture on Twitter! Al in all it was a pretty awesome day! https://twitter.com/NHL/status/216538636982812672/photo/1
