Just picked up the new Matisyahu and Serj Tankian albums for my wife on Tuesday. I'm digging the musical texture on the Serj album. I also dug out my old Blues Brother soundtrack to play along with a transcription of She Caught the Katy that was in the new issue of Bass Player (RIP Donald "Duck" Dunn")

"Someone Else's Story" - from "Chess", a musical written by Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus of ABBA w/ lyrics by Tim Rice. (sorry for going Broadway, I'm a HS choir director)

That is one ridiculous amount of wampum. I got a chuckle out of that. Plus, with Detroit being the "gold standard" the last 15-20 years, I would guess that most, if not all, of the others GM's are hoping to see the Wings take a fall in the near future and want at least a bit more from them in trade than another team to try to precipitate that fall, rather than help them.

I seem to remember reading that draft picks used for RFA compensation had to be your team's own picks, not picks acquired from other teams in trade, that may be a factor in Holland's thinking, as well as other GM's. I see this as Philly going all in to snag a cup with their current young core before they are open to FA themselves. The current CBA negotiations are also a huge question mark, particularly in light of the first offer from the league and its contract implications moving forward. As others have said, this is likely the last year for the ridiculously long mega deals so Weber went for the greenbacks.

Parity = evening out among the teams of the league. Parody = the panic of some of the fan base, OR what Mike Milbury was as a GM. There are so many layers to consider beyond just this season. I think realistically the changing if the guard for the Wings was coming, but many were trying to hold it at bay. Some of Holland's comments have to be taken as posturing, as an attempt to minimize the price gouging on trades by other GM's. Someone else said it, the Wings have been the NHL gold standard franchise for close to 20 years, and the other GM's know it. They are NOT going to do Holland any favors. The "old comment" about Wings fans being arrogant is seeming to ring true with some of the flying off the handle comments posted recently. It was a thin UFA crop this year after Suter and Parise. Holland made a good effort, period. There are long term implications to the new CBA, including re-signing our own players after this season (Howard and Filppula). Holland has to have more knowledge of the CBA negotiations than us, and it may be that some things are going to change in ways we aren't foreseeing but he is, and he's considering that "inside info". Plus, it is several MONTHS before opening night, no reason to panic. I'm willing to give Holland some time.

Probie/Kocur the next generation? But with the Holmstrom net-front presence further irritating/infuriating the opposition? Mwahahahahaha.
-
What about having him as the media liaison (too much potential gold there), but some form of coaching position so he can pass on his net front wisdom as well? If we can get a young prospect to develop in that area it could be huge. I realize that his internal GPS for the crease line and hand-eye coordination are innate, but anything to be gleaned from him can only help. I'm one of those who was skeptical of the Tootoo signing, but if Homer could teach him some of his net front tricks, it would create some VERY interesting possibilities. McKee and Callahan are other possibilities that come to mind.

If I recall correctly, player salaries rolled back approximately 24%. Lidstrom was signed at nearly 10 mil/yr prior to it. Edit Here's a link http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/columns/story?id=2107128

+1 on the comments about Probie's book being a GREAT read. During my undergrad days at Penn State In 1990-1995 I proudly wore my Probert jersey once a week.

Suter Watch: Decision today, down to Wings/Wild
TheXym replied to HockeytownRules19's topic in General
Wouldn't it be something if he re-signs with NSH and did this just to mind-f**k everyone? I don't think that's the case, but it'd set off more fireworks than the 4th of July among some NHL fandoms. That said, both he and Parise should be allowed some time to decide as it's likely their only shot at FA. The numbers being thrown are mindboggling, but I'd love to be in their shoes. As fans, some people need to chill a bit. It's just unfortunate that everything else seems to be on hold in the NHL as a result. I also wonder if the new CBA is going to address the FA process in reaction to the Suter and Parise situations.- 487 replies

signed Red Wings Sign Jordin Tootoo to 3-yr deal, $1.9M/yr
TheXym replied to Tim.D's topic in General
I was VERY surprised and skeptical of this signing, but after reflecting and reading, if Jordin has dealt with his inner demons, and has indeed turned a corner he could end up being a huge x-factor on the fourth line. Ability to wreck shop and chip in some points is something the team hasn't had much of in ages. I'm looking forward to seeing if he can rise to the challenge this year. -
I was in and then wasnt on a refresh

Clockwork Angels - Rush New concept album and I think it's the best they've put out since Moving Pictures. My wife is not a Rush fan (mostly due to Geddy's voice in the early years) though being married to a bass player has given her a new appreciation for his playing, and she really liked it.

Jack and Diane - John Cougar (if I recall correctly it came out before he used the Mellencamp in his stage name)

A sad day indeed. Richard Gnida is a waste of genetic material. It's a travesty that someone would be driving on a suspended license for a limo service, and if I recall correctly there were reports of him being under the influence as well. Vladdy was a sure fire hall of famer had he not been injured in that wreck. I rocked my white Konstantinov jersey today, and shed a few tears. My fondest memory was being in Philly for a game and rocking the jersey during a Wings win that featured a monster hit on Lindros by the Vladinator.

That's a bummer. I'd love to fly out from PA for the Winter Classic but there is no way I'm going to buy season tix that I'll never be able to use. Guess I can change the Xmas vacation plans.

Zach Smith would be a nice pickup. I saw him play quite a few times when he was with the Binghamton Senators. Solid player with some grit and my friend who is on the B Sen's fan advisory board says he's a great guy in the locker room as well. Edit: typos due to using an ipod touch to post.

If I recall correctly it was Fedorov, and he defected during a Goodwill Games.

I just started skyrim recently myself. Whiterun is where i do a lot of smithing and enchanting (2 blacksmiths plus the guy inside Warmaiden's for buying leather straps and iron ingots to do the iron dagger spam to raise the Smithing skill. Also there is an enchanter inside the jarl's residence which is good for enchanting the iron daggers you smith to boost your enchanting skill.)
