    Lesser FA players.

Completely agree. Those types of players are great for a team on the verge of a cup when they have the stars and are just looking to upgrade a few of their lower lines, but for us a team re-building I would rather play the kids in those spots. The only kind of UFA's I want to sign are those that are game changers that can be a part of our core for years and years to come. The only exception I would make would be re-signing some of our vets as long as the contracts are reasonable. Now, if the trade deadline comes and we are one of the top teams in the league and we traded for one of these types of players in anticipation of a a deep playoff run, that I would be okay with, but we are not there yet, not even close.

Drew Miller re-signs... 1 year deal $1.025 million

I was by no means advocating for this signing, but at the same time I am not against it. I am okay with Miller being given a 4th line spot as long as he has to compete for it.

I see what you are saying, but this wouldn't have changed anything with E. He's 32 with 4 years left.

They had a season where they were in the second round with Chicago, Anaheim, and LA all out and they still couldn't get out of the West. I think this team is realizing that for whatever reason they are just not built for the playoffs.

    Detroit trades Datsyuk to Arizona

Number 2 is a big assumption by you and many others, people are trying to create the definitive narrative that Detroit passed over Chychrun in order to make this trade, there is no guarantee that Detroit ever wanted him and if they picked at 16 they very well could have picked someone else just like the 15 teams before them. If you are Detroit, and you are not planning on drafting Chychrun due to his injury history, what better move to make then to trade the pick to a team that does want him, add a second, and get rid of Datsyuk's contract. Now, is that what happened? Who knows, only a hand fill of people could answer that question. But my point is you cant say that trade cost us Chychrun as we have no clue who they would have drafted at 16 had they picked.

My issue with trading for Shattenkirk is he is a UFA at the end of the season. I dont want to give up our future for a 1 year rental. Now some kind of sign and trade, different story.

Datsyuk Announcement to Officially Leave NHL

Who said anything about them finishing top 3? If you are talking NHL or conference, I dont think anyone has said that. If you are talking top 3 in the division which is what they have finished 2 straight years, that is not by any stretch a ridiculous prediction. Personally I will reserve any predictions or judgements until after the roster is figured out.

That is a very weak argument given the fact McDavid is so young and the sky's the limit. Nobody ever disputed (correct me if I'm wrong Kickazz) that McDavid does not have the higher ceiling, the dispute is who is better. The question to ask is if you could sign either player to a 1 year deal for the exact same cap hit, knowing that whomever you sign is going to leave after that 1 year, and you had a 100% guarantee that your choice would be healthy for an entire season, who would it be. Personally, I believe Stamkos, and I believe most GM's would choose Stamkos as well. If I am Calgary and I either have to trade the #6 pick for Fleury, or a 7th rounder for Howard, I am choosing Howard without a question.

So if we are comparing Forwards to Defense, are we going to include Goalies in the mix? Bottom line, you can make an argument that a certain forward is more valuable to his team then a D-man, but you cant say one is "better" then the other. How can you say Price is better then Crosby, or Weber is better then Ovie etc.

Datsyuk Announcement to Officially Leave NHL

I just dont see why a team wouldn't make a trade for the contract, if the team is in the other conference (ie. not competing for a playoff spot) and needs to get to the cap floor. I understand teams trying to get the best deal possible, but if Holland doesn't budge if its only bad offers are out there, then a team is going to pass on get something for literally nothing. Some team could get a player like Pulkkinen and a low pick for just taking a contract and terminating it. Too not make that deal as a GM of a team like Arizona is just bad business if its that or nothing.

I'm hoping Holland is able to trade the contract, but at the same time I hope he doesn't cave into fan pressure and overpay to trade it. Unless it stops us from signing a stud, I'm not willing to morgage the future so we can be better for 1 year.

At the end of the day its a game of chicken, and most likely whoever is more desperate is going to lose. I dont think either of you are "wrong", both will try to get the best deal they can get, but likely at some point one of them will walk away, and then the other will budge (the more desperate one). Or they meet in the middle which is possible as well.

    Dustin Brown losing captaincy

The problem is that in the "old days" if a team wasnt happy with their captain, they could just trade him and never have to worry about this even being an issue. There always seemed to be a team willing to bite on a player like Brown. Now in the cap era, teams just wont take that chance as he is not worth the cap hit. My first reaction was that this was a classless move by the Kings, but I have changed my mind as I think I was wrong. You have to do what is best for the team overall, and if you feel the guy is not the person to lead your team, you can't just leave things be for 6 more years.

There were definitely things about his personality, especially in the late 90's that rubbed alot of people the wrong way. But if you want to see why he's one of the greatest of all time, just watch the main event of WM25 and you will get it.

  23. To be completely honest, the more I think about it, I think Datsyuk going is a blessing in disguise. We are not going to win the cup this year, our goal needs to be to complete the re-build and become contenders by 2018. If Datsyuk leaving gives us the ability to trade his contract and use that cap space to trade for or sign someone who can be apart of our core moving forward, that is a good thing! This is not a slight on Datsyuk, the guy is one of the greatest Red Wings off all time, and watching him over the last 14+ years has been a privilege. But, in a re-build you need to look long term and Datsyuk regardless of whether he plays this year or not, is not apart of those long term plans. I look forward to seeing him get his jersey retired at the new building.
  24. Playing in a 2 or 3 week tournament in your home country where your daughter lives is much different then being across the world for 9 months a year. Who is to say that his daughter isn't at the game watching her father, going out for dinner with him afterwards etc. And even if she isnt, its a very short tournament, just not the same.
  25. Even if Holland did say he wouldn't trade it (which only makes sense if you are trying to create a story in which Holland is a villain), I'm sure all it would take is for his boss to say "trade the contract". Holland has pull, but with something like this I cant see the Illitch's not forcing his hand. The only way he doesn't do it is if teams try to get too much from us in return.
