Russo was chosen in the sixth round, 132nd overall, of the 2011 KHL Draft by Locomotiv Yaroslavl.2008-09: Russo played for the Chicago Mission Tier 1 AAA club, scoring 5 goals and adding 17 assists for 22 points in 46 games. 2011-12: Russo stepped right into the lineup for Notre Dame as a freshman – skating in all 40 games for the Fighting Irish. Russo finished one point behind junior Sam Calabrese for the team lead in points amongst defensemen with 4 goals and 11 assists and was minus-seven with 14 penalty minutes. He scored all four of his goals on the power play. Notre Dame finished eighth in the CCHA and advanced to the league tournament quarterfinals against Michigan after sweeping a first round series with Ohio State. 2012-13: Russo skated in all 41 games for Notre Dame as a sophomore. He led Fighting Irish defensemen in scoring with 5 goals and 18 assists and was +6 with 40 penalty minutes. Notre Dame captured the CCHA tournament championship after finishing second to Miami in the regular season. The Fighting Irish fell to St. Cloud State in the NCAA Midwest Regional semifinals. 2013-14: Russo skated in 21 games for Notre Dame in his junior season at Notre Dame. He scored 4 goals with 11 assists and was +9 with 8 penalty minutes for the Fighting Irish before being declared academically ineligible in January. Notre Dame finished eighth in Hockey East in its first year in the conference. The Fighting Irish upset first-place Boston College in the conference tournament and received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament; falling to St. Cloud State, 4-3, in overtime in the NCAA West regional semifinals. 2014-15: Russo was the second-leading scorer for Notre Dame as a senior, trailing only forward Vince Hinostroza (Chicago) with 41 points. He scored 15 goals with 26 assists and was +13 with 20 penalty minutes in 40 games for the Fighting Irish. Notre Dame finished fifth in Hockey East; taking fourth-place Massachusetts-Lowell to three games in the Hockey East quarterfinals before falling 6-4 in the decisive third game and finishing 18-19-5. Russo was not signed by the Islanders, becoming an unrestricted free agent, and signed a two-year entry-level contract with Detroit in August 2015. 2015-16: Russo was the leading scorer amongst defensemen for Red Wings’ AHL affiliate Grand Rapids in his first pro season. He scored 5 goals with 34 assists and was +40 with 42 penalty minutes in 71 games. The Griffins finished fourth in the Central Division, reaching the playoffs for the fourth straight season. Talent Analysis Russo is a very solid puck mover from the back end and is not afraid to use his body. He is also a great leader and a very hard worker. A free agent signee by the Red Wings after playing out his NCAA eligibility, Russo is a playmaker from the back end while playing a strong defensive game. Future Russo skated for Detroit AHL affiliate Grand Rapids in 2015-16, leading the team's defensemen in scoring as a rookie. Russo will push for a roster spot with the Red Wings in training camp in 2016-17 and projects as a middle pairing defenseman who can contribute to the attack and on the power play.

At this point Miller should not be playing another game, and Kronwall should rest for the remainder of the year. Hopefully Russo takes Kronwall's spot. We need to play the kids. Just saw he was hurt....damn! Kid can't catch a break. I was really hoping he could use the next couple months to prove he is a top 6 D-man, or potentially top 4.

Would you trade E and Howard for Filppula?

Chaps, you did put words in my mouth as you started going off on how Yzerman is on a different level then Kronwall. By saying this in the way you did its putting it out there that I believe differently which I do not. Either way, I fail to see how the Kronwall and Yzerman situations are different? Both busted their asses for their entire career's as Red Wings, both had their knees go to s***, both were a shells of their former shelves near the end. My point, is that I hold respect for what they did, and will not come down on them for their bodies breaking down. Does Kronwall's cap-hit suck, yes it does, but I am not going to vilify Kronwall for that. To your second question, I think you may have misunderstood something. I have no problem with anyone including you speaking the truth about Kronwall being finished, I fully admit he no longer has what it takes to be a top guy in the NHL and hopes he goes on LTIR sooner then later. What I have an issue with is people giving him s***. There is a big difference between saying "Kronwall is done and needs to retire" and "Ughhh seriously Kronwall you piece of useless s***, I'm sick of seeing your sorry ass on the ice". I'm not saying you say that, my point is I have issues when people in general say that, or say things similar to that. "Are you and Kenny related by any chance?" Come on man, there is no need to take shots. I think you are a good contributor to this board and I may disagree with things you say sometimes, but I think we can have a debate without taking shots at each other. If I offended you which led to that comment, that was not my intention. With that being said, yes I will admit I think loyalty is important. Doesnt mean I think that every player should be signed to a long term contract, but someone who's knees break down should not be vilified IMO. And when I say that, I dont mean necessarily you, I mean in general. I dont agree that playing top pairing took 2-3 years off his career, but I can't prove that and there is no way for either of us to back of our opinion. I'm basing my opinion on what I know of anatomy. IMO Kronwall's condition likely was created by an injury that never healed, or more likely by chronic knee issues that were inevitable (isnt it both knees?). Playing above your head doesnt usually lead to injury, it just leads to bad performance (ie DD this year). Though, there could be something to him being overworked at an older age, I will admit I could be wrong about this one. -
Why mock my post? Do you not know the contract info regarding the 3 players? Or are you being sarcastic for no reason? My comment was more so as a joke, but in all seriousness, if Philly offered you Filppula (1 more year 5mil) for E (3 more years at 4.25mil) and Howard (2 more years at 5.3) you really think it would be a stupid move to accept? I really fail to see your logic here Dickie? If your grand plan is to dump salary, this trade clears E and Howard in essentially one more year.

Ok , first off I never said Yzerman and Kronwall were at the same level. Please don't put words in my mouth and twist the narrative. Here is my narrative, if a player's body breaks down because of what they did on the ice for your franchise, when that player is in regression you don't take personal shots at him. I dont care if you are Yzerman, Kronwall, or Franzen, they put their bodies on the line for your team. I dont only respect great players for putting their bodies on the line, I respect all players. I will even do you one better and say Yzerman was the greatest Wing of all time with all due respect to Gordie Howe. Also, do you really think that if Kronwall was playing 3min less per game his knees would be 100%? Maybe it happened a bit sooner, but not replacing Lidstrom is not the reason for Kronwall's injuries. -
I'd trade Howard and E for him lol.
-
IF Sheahan were to be protected, I see it being Z, Nielsen, AA, Mantha, Nyquist and Abby with Helm and Tatar being exposed, personally I would expose Abby and Tatar in that group (if I had to protect Sheahan), but I wouldnt protect Sheahan. A trade needs to be coming. A team like TO would be perfect as they dont have a lot of guys they need to protect as most of their best players are exempt.

Rate Yzerman, Lidstrom and Zetterberg's leadership during their runs as C's

But this is my point, there is no way to measure "glue". We are all just guessing. -

4 years away from making the playoffs? Being contenders? Or winning a cup? -
I was just joking about Nielsen, in all seriousness I think he done done well here. I admit I dont like the contract, but he's played fine. I do believe that if Datsyuk stayed and played say 25 games which I think is a strong possibility, I think with no Nielsen and very little Datsyuk we are worse. Now, if we got 82 games of healthy Datsyuk, there is no question we are better.

That's essentially the same thing I said, most captain are judged by standings (ie. winning). My thing is this, if Toews gets injured, do I think they lose a step? I really dont think so with Keith, Seabrook, and Kane. -
I worry that you are right about this. At least in Kronwall's case, I would say there is little to no chance LV takes him, but Abby could be chosen and that idea alone may be motivation to protect him. I'm with you in that I take Helm and his 4 years over Abby and his 6 every time. Unless we trade Tatar and protect both which I could see happening as well. I really like Helm as a 3rd line C and dont want him gone.
-
Could be worse if he missed more time that previous years, because if he was here we lose our "all-star" lol.

Judging leadership is all guess work IMO. The only guys who could is answer this question truly would be Kronwall, Franzen, Cleary, Howard and KFQ. Though in the cases of KFQ and Howard they played sparingly under Yzerman, so really Kronwall, Franzen, and Cleary. None of us know for sure, and most of us just judge leadership by the standings (ie. Toews). -

I agree with all of this. My issue is when people talk about him in a critical way and personalize it (ie. Ughhh, come on Kronwall you piece of crap, what are you doing!!". -
Smart move would probably be to trade Sheahan (if he is worth a 1st, LV will take him just to trade him) then protect Z, Nielsen, Helm, Nyquist, Tatar, AA, Mantha and leave Abby exposed. I dont think LV is opposed to picking up bad contracts because of the cap floor, but I can't see them wanting that term of 6 more years, plus Abby is having an awful year. You do this, and I think it increases the probability of LV taking an E or Howard, or worst case taking an XO, Jensen, Sproul, Bertuzzi, Glendenning most of which I like and want to keep, but wont be the worst thing in the world.

So what you are saying is that Hudler was capable of scoring more in a different system. I agree that Nyquist will not get 60 points here again if our system doesnt change, what I am proposing is since all of our player are struggling, that we change our system. Answer me this.....If Nyquist is capable of scoring 60 points in another system, why wouldn't he be able to score 60 here if we changed our system? Either way, you can scream about Nyquist being dumped until you are blue in the face, its not happening unless its in a trade for a player like Trouba/Fowler/Hamilton etc. and I believe the majority of Wings fans would agree with this.
-
This....really couldnt say it any better. Had he stayed his GP would likely be around 40 or less IMO by the end of the year, so with that being said I think we would be in the same position or worse because we would not have Nielsen. Though capwise better, because I dont like the Nielsen contract. As far as Chychrun goes, who knows if the Wings were even interested. At least we got 2 young D prospects for him

I'll ive you E, but I dont see how anyone can give Kronwall crap. The guy is doing the best he can with what he has left. It's not his fault his knees are falling apart. It would be like slamming Yzerman for his final season. -
Please just try to use logic for one minute and take your blind hate out of the equation. If Nyquist in a bad system with a bad coach is capable of getting 42 points, you really dont think its possible with the right line mates, in a good system, with a good coach to get 60? I am not saying 80 or 90 or something ridiculous, we are talking 60 points, the guy is 27 years old, I have a hard time believing he is "done". Very funny you use Hudler as an example saying him getting 60-70 points is bullcrap considering in Calgary with the right linemates in the right situation he did get 76 points at 30 years old. Is this truly how blind your hate is? Even after someone accomplishes something you claim impossible, you still in retrospect say it was impossible? You dont see the flawed logic there? Also, please stop saying he is taking a top 6 spot when it has been proven to you that he has not.

I'm open to your theory....can you explain how the hit motivated Detroit the next game? -
edit...saw your corrected post.

Nah, he could easily put up 60 with the right coach playing in the right role. Even this year which is an awful year for him, he is on pace to score 42 points (if he played 82 games). That doesnt even make any sense, every player on the team was signed to a contract by Holland, so with that logic every player he doesnt protect is "an admission of guilt".
