Possession should count towards defense and so should back checking. I don't disagree with that, but I'm also saying that there are other things primary things that seperate the guys who can play some amount of defense from guys that are REALLY good are defense. Guys like Yzerman and Fedorov in the past and guys like Datsyuk, Toews, Zetterberg etc today.

I said he's not known for his defensive ability. No one here said he's bad. I think you're over exaggerating the argument. Kane is a possession player sure, but he's not a defensive player in the general sense. He's not a good penalty killer, he's not known for takeaways, he's not a good shutdown player. You're ignoring the prime attributes of defense and looking at possession and equating it to having defensive ability. I don't agree with that. To me if someone is defensively astute they would have more than the simple ability to hang on to the puck. When Zetterberg was in the Selke running from 2006-2008 he mostly played as a Left Wing rather than a Center and he was not only a possession player but also a shutdown forward, good at takeaways, and killed A LOT of penalties and blocked a ton of shots. Also Hossa is quite known for his defense so I'm not sure if you can say he wasn't recognized. He's been voted in top 5 for Selke running in the past. He's been a primary PK guy in his career. http://nesn.com/2015/04/patrice-bergeron-marian-hossa-among-top-picks-for-selke-tophy-video/

I mean he's 44 years old not 82 years old.. 44 is considered pretty young in this world. Hips don't break till.. well till you're actually old.

So do you think Wayne Gretzky is overrated?
-
Best joke I've heard all day. And here we thought you had trouble reading/interpreting forum posts. Kane over Toews. All day any day. Who would you pick Bill berzzzzzzench?
-
And I will finish you with this - http://espn.go.com/core/espn/magazine/archives/news/story?page=magazine-19980615-article26 Yzerman had the ability to play a two way game since juniors. He focused more on it in 1993 when Bowman came in. Not in 1996 as you originally stated. Yzerman always had it in him and didn't apply it because they needed his offense in the 80s. Kane is NOT known for any sort of inherent defensive ability and likely never will be. So to make a comparison to Kane and Yzerman is a joke. If anything comparing Toews to Yzerman might make a little more sense. Except Yzerman was a much better offensive player and probably about the same as Toews in his defensive abilities. "I've always thought of Stevie as a good defensive player," says Pang, who played midget hockey with Yzerman. "People forget that he played his junior hockey at Peterborough, where you have to play both ends of the rink. And they forget that when he arrived in Detroit, the team wasn't very good, and they needed his offensive skills." Yzerman's career took a U-turn in 1993 with the arrival of Bowman. "Scotty wanted the team to think defense first," Yzerman says. "He wanted me to model my game after Jacques Lemaire, who played for him in Montreal."

Yzerman was killing penalties and blocking shots well before 1996. I suggest you rent some old hockey videos.

As some predicted all the "good" teams that were doing terrible earlier in the season (Tampa, Anaheim, Boston) are surging. -
Yzerman was a complete player as well. Feds was just better defensively and a flashy guy. Fedorov was like the Datsyuk. Yzerman was like the Zetterberg. Kane and Yzerman are nothing alike. Kane is just pure offense. Yzerman was a Selke winner and one of the best faceoff guys in the league. Not to mention he killed A LOT of penalties.

Agreed. Very good assessment. If you asked me 5 years ago I would have picked Toews. But it's pretty obvious that Kane's offensive ability has vastly surpassed Toews. These last two years, Kane has been incredible. I'm not a fan of him as a person but all things being equal if I had to build a team around Toews of Kane I'd pick Kane. Decent defensive centers aren't too hard to come by (Toews, Bergeron, Kopitar, Pav, Z, Backes, Kesler, O' Rielly) in this era but creative consistent scoring wingers are in my opinion (only Benn, Kane and Ovie is all I can think of really). I think leadership is a bit overrated. If I had to pick between Ovie and Shane Doan I'd pick Ovie every time even though Shane Doan is probably the best leader and captain in the entire league. So while Toews is a great captain and Kane is a s***ty person, I'd still pick Kane if a game 7 is on the line.

Will JV have a clutch season? If so we go far.

Also, a lot of those goals against Chicago were goals Mrazek usually doesn't have an issue saving. I'm wondering if he's being conservative with his groin. If so, maybe he needs to be healing.
-
What are you talking about? Mrazek is 2-3 in his last 5 games. That's not even a winning percentage. He's allowed 5 goals in 3 of his last 6 games. That's atrocious. 18 games left and we're in wild card spot. I don't care who the starter is. Play the goalie that's hot.

AA has 4 goals and 7 points in 19 games and Jurco has 4 goals and 6 points in 39 games. Yet somehow Jurco is first line and AA is 3rd line? Why are fans still so high on Jurco? He's being outplayed by guys younger and less experienced than he is. Jurco shouldn't be anything more than a third line winger till he can show he can play 1st line minutes. -
Unfortunately no. I just use my old crappy equipment still lol.
-
Wonder if he found the pair of socks.
-
Or at the very least take them to a deep playoff run. Something Crosby was able to do (till he initially lost to the Wings)

Everytime Mrazek has a loss you make a ton of excuses and blame everything including the coaching staff. When it's Howard, you solely blame Howard. Try to be a bit more fair in your assessment so it can be taken seriously. And what exactly has Jurco done to earn a 2nd line spot? -
I just think they should play the one that's most likely to get them the win at this point. There's only 18 games left. Mrazek's had only 1 real good game in his last like 7 starts. He may need another challenge and putting Jimmy in might motivate him again. Either way imo they should do what's best for the team. We'll see who gets the start next game.
-
Are they fake?
-
Yeah it's time to switch back to Howard for the time being. Sorry Mraz but your skills are tanking at the wrong time of the season. Lack of good defense doesn't help and I get it, but Howard was pretty solid in his last few starts and I'd pick him for now.

I don't know what game you've been watching and I'm not sticking up for Green, but next to Smith he's our second fastest defenseman. Unless you mean his reactionary quickness. Skating wise he's pretty fast. -

Agreed. Although there's times where out of no where he has this weird burst. Usually when Pav is carrying the puck and they have an odd man rush. It happens at least once a game and I get excited only to realize it was a tease as Hank goes back to being slow rest of the game. I think he's conservative about his speed and only goes full if it's worth it. IDK. -
All the time The person below me will vote for Hillary over Trump if it came down to it.
