Osgood didn't come storming into the league, get anointed with the starting role quickly and then when he had issues, he was shipped out. He was brought along slowly, because he had to be. Simply not ready. He only took over the job around late 1994 when Essensa failed after the Chevy trade, then gave up that Game 7 winning goal to SJ. Literally gave it right to Baker with a complete open net to shoot at. So they knew he still needed to learn and got Vernon to help him, which he did. They traded Vernon after he just backstopped them to a Cup and won the Smythe. Figured Osgood was ready, which he was. They hung onto him for years to develop him. Patience. Replacing him with Hasek, I think any goalie who wasn't Brodeur or Roy would have accepted that, especially after losing to LA in six games in the first round. He held no animosity and re-signed because he was replaced with one of the top 3 guys in the NHL with 6 vezinas, 2 harts, and an Eastern Conference title (All with Buffalo!) on his resume. I'd bow out too. He also didn't have many other options at that time, and simply liked Detroit. Mrazek made mistakes of course, but he was given up on very quickly. He had started to win the job back. Probably could have earlier in the season if he was given a good shot at that time. Too short of a time frame is my main issue with the trade. Holland had zero patience with him. Not at all like the Osgood saga.

That would be pretty screwed up. haha If he can't be traded and comes back a couple days after the deadline i'll be pissed.

I think the goalie battle/flame war was the last half interesting thing going on. Now it's just like, whatever. Trade Green and Howard if possible. After that, tank hard. 3-1 lead on 17 shots. Tankin' ain't easy in Detroit.

No way Green gets the Wings that haul. Even one of the two is pushing it. It's just perfect that he's injured right now. Even a minor one. What a s***fest.

Lundqvist? Really? I can see it though. He's spent his career in NY giving his all to help push the team to the top, but they always let him down. He might be fed up and want to win a Cup before he rots away there. I don't see NYI being in on him though. Too close of a rivalry. Would be like him going to NJ. And even if they were willing to do it, without checking i'm sure he has contract clauses that allow him to block it. And no doubt he would. If he moves, he'll want a contender. Calgary is intriguing though. They have a good team. An elite goalie could take them far.

Only in Detroit... I saw Leivo play quite a few games in junior. He was a great player, but haven't heard much about him since. Maybe cause Toronto has Matthews, Nylander, and stuff.

No, but they wanted him to be, at least at first. And he was pretty damn good. Oh well, just another missed opportunity. I hope they take better care of Larsson and Petruzelli's development. Coreau should also be given as many starts as possible for the rest of the season. Let him get some good time in the net and see where he's at, if he's even a viable option going forward. They know what they have with Howard, and the season is a wash.

Goalies have never been known for the most sensible ways of thinking. Certain rituals (some quite bizarre) and certain conditions can mean the difference between success and failure. I don't see it as him being a diva or an *******, it's just what makes him comfortable. If getting Howard out of town may have accomplished that, then why not?

I can respect that. Some seem to think he's vital to this team's success though, including Holland. He's had a lot of chances, help, coddling, and benefit of the doubt in his career. Sure, he held it down when the team was good, but once the team dropped, he dropped. Been off and on since. Elliott is Howard 2.0. Exact same type of goalie. He'll hold it down for ya, but he won't take you where you need to go. As a goalie myself growing up, I tend to pay a lot more attention to that aspect of the game. One of my faves was Vanbiesbrouck, and he wasn't one of the best, or ever a Red Wing. Osgood, Vernon, Hasek..all time faves because of what they accomplished in Detroit. We all have favourite players for different reasons. Yzerman and Zetterberg are obv faves as well, but guys like Probert and McCarty too. Datsyuk bailing changed my opinion of him too. It's one season and the team is on hook for the money, just play it out, retire looking good. I don't believe Holland was as aggressive as he could have been to move Howard. He wouldn't retain any salary in the deal, acting like he had some value at the time. Just like the NYI/Philly thing. He still thinks Howard is worth a high draft pick and that's why teams will balk at him.

Yeah. They made the Finals in '90 or '91. then Wirtz dismantled the roster bit by bit. He had Belfour and Hasek on that team at the same time, although Hasek didn't reach elite form until he was traded to Buffalo for a very s***ty goalie who's name I forget. But he had Belfour blocking his way no matter what. Both moved on and won Cups elsewhere. Pretty sure attendance for home games during that s***ty period was around 5000. Hawks "fans" went into hiding until they miraculously reappeared around 2008.

It could happen, but probably not until the offseason when he's got one year left. If NYI doesn't re-sign Halak, maybe a deal gets done then. Least Holland is open to it. That's progress.

One of those he should have had, but a win is win. That's what he was brought to Philly to do, give them a chance to win. He's gotten 1 or 2 points in 9 of his 11 games since his shutout against Chicago Jan. 14. 7 wins, 4 losses, 2 in OT. 2 shutouts. Not too shabby. The fourth increasing to a third round pick is one thing I think most of us figure is going to happen.

I'm glad to see a few people on here realizing that completely avoidable circumstances could have stopped the Mrazek/management downward spiral awhile back, and that Holland made a stupid choice that may make him look like a fool. "Money, work ethic, attitude, blah blah," had he aggressively shopped Howard and retained salary to get him outta town. Maybe Jimmy cried in Holland's off ice saying he wanted one more chance. Who knows. Either way, dumb. The Cujo thing sucked for sure. He was also treated like s*** by Holland. One of the top 5 NHL goalies of his era playing in GR. f*** me. And he still makes Holland look stupid. Making the ECF, something the Wings and Holland's prized Jimmy havent done since 2009, without a spectacular roster in front of him would just show he screwed up. But yay, 2nd rounder! Mrazek wouldn't re-sign here unless he's desperate. He'd probably say "Show me $4 million" and hang up the phone.

It's not a stupid thing. Some goalies don't like their predecessor around when they've won his starting job. It's a distraction. Some don't care, some do. if your committed to that guy, you do whatever it takes to fix that situation so he can move on. He was always the top guy everywhere he played, and wanted that in Detroit. Some forget, goalies are creatures of some VERY weird habits that can throw their game off if not completed or addressed. Holland could have ate salary and moved Howard out, but wouldnt budge on it. Hextall couldnt start a game without touching each face off dot in his zone and then at center ice. Even got into a fight over it when one team in the playoffs tried to block the center dot so he couldnt touch it. Habits and confidence you are THE top guy. Can be absolutely critical to his success.

Now that sums it up nicely. Holland’s reluctance to move on from Howard may cripple this team for awhile. Mrazek is gone, it’s done, but if they want to groom someone to take over eventually, whether it’s Coreau (if he’s capable) or one of the prospects, he and Blash need to fully commit to it, and soon. Howard’s play has dropped off for the most part (again), and he could be one injury away from retirement. Not saying he’ll get another contract after next season, but if Holland is still around, he just might. Sure, this season is a wash, but a lack of NHL capable goalies in the system currently is of concern, especially given Hollands 2019-20 goal to be a much better team. He sure looks content. Haven’t seen him without a grouchy look for awhile. ”Hey Kenny, f*** you!”

No, the hitting thing isn’t a big deal, and bulking up may affect his skating, but with a smaller frame against the bigger guys, whoever drafts him should get him to move away from that part of his game somewhat. No need to go for hits if you don’t need to. If he’s a Lidstrom/Karlsson hybrid, he should be smart enough on the ice to be able to avoid them too. Lidstrom rarely got hit.

Yes it is, but it is what it is. I hate the trade because he was still the best NHL ready goalie in the Wings system, despite the haters, but I like the fact he gets a fresh start somewhere he’s actually wanted where they’re glad to have him come in. Gets to play behind a team that can actually defend and block shots and help out their goalies. Plus playoffs are cool. Looking forward to seeing his new painted mask and gear.

I hate the idea of trading Tatar. Nyquist I’m 50/50. They should be way down the list of contracts to purge. But they have to trade good young players if they want to cut cap. The ones that need to go can’t be moved, unless Holland holds onto some salary and sends a sweetener prospect/pick. And even then.. They shouldn’t worry about Gus and Tats right now. No real need to. Hang onto them, and wait a couple other crap deals with only a bit left out to expiration, like Kronwall, Howard, and Errorsson.
