Red Wings Expansion Draft Protected List

It's called development. Not every goalie comes into the league with their head on straight ready for anything. Holland has even said that Mrazek hasn't faced much, if any, adversity in his career up until a couple years ago. I mentioned Osgood, Holland trading Vernon to give him full reign. That's what you do. You'd prefer Howard/Coreau going into next season. One can get lit up and have a bad injury, the other will just get lit up. Looking ahead at expansion draft

The league is trending toward bigger goalies. Coreau fits that mold, but he had to learn to play like a big goalie. Ends up on the ice a lot where his size is negated. Needs to stand tall and cover as much net as he can, cut angles, give NOTHIN to shoot at. As for Mrazek, he isn't that small. Pics I've seen of him side by side with Howard, they're pretty much the same height. Mrazek is a bit smaller body wise. Think he's listed as 6'2". A lot of stats sites differ though, as they usually do. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    Looking ahead at expansion draft

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk He HAS to. Might require a completely new approach to what he's used to, but goalies get re-trained all the time. Osgood had to change when he returned to the Wings, and he did it without complaint and became a better goalie than he already was. Damn I miss Osgood. Lol Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

The problem definitely doesn't begin and end with Holland. Jimmy D sort of seems to be just "there", although he sees the obvious need for change, it's not something he can do on his own. Chris Illitch seems to concentrate more on selling pizza than anything, and seems like he has a "Holland will do what he'll do, the team is in good hands cause my Dad believed in him" sort of attitude. But, we all better get used to the bonehead moves (like we aren't already), and that even the most obvious things everyone expects any GM with a sound mind would be done, won't be. Even if this team ends up dead last after this season, he will get another four year extension. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Pretty much. What's he got to lose. He can take every goalie on that list if he feels like it. That was one of the things he talked about doing. Take all the goalies he can, keep who he wants, flip the rest. Luongo is a bit of a surprise to be exposed over Reimer, but he's near the end of his career, so I can see justification in it. https://www.thescore.com/nhl/news/1320723-the-7-best-goalies-made-available-to-the-golden-knights Seven best goalies available to Vegas. Look who's second under Fleury. Vegas can take 7 goalies. Scary how everyone except Holland expected him to be protected. Time to go Kenny. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Red Wings Expansion Draft Protected List

I stopped reading anything by HSJ the second I read she thought Coreau should be protected. They might not be happy with Mrazek because of his attitude and his failure to live up to what he's shown he's capable of, but that's not an uncommon situation with young players with high ceilings in the NHL. Mrazek hasn't faced many struggles in his career. Dominated the AHL and stole the starting job in Detroit when they didn't even need him to at that point. Since he's regressed, many have written him off. Hasn't been that long, especially for a goalie. He's lost confidence, but that doesn't mean he won't rebound. One more year on his contract then RFA. Not like he was locked up to a Jimmy deal. And the team is going nowhere. I would let him have that last season. Out of Holland's hands until Vegas picks now though. Because he has no good explanation. One "rebound" season for Jimmy numbers wise where he started TWENTY SIX games, and Coreau getting lit up in most of the games he played after his call up, and Mrazek is expendable? LOLLLL!! Maybe he has a plan in place with Vegas, but I don't see what that plan is. The only protection option in goal that makes any sense from an asset standpoint is Mrazek. I fully expected him to be on the protected list. I think 97% of anyone with any hockey knowledge did by the press and fan reactions. Holland saves himself Jimmy ******* Howard. The goalie he tried to trade a year ago, and no one wanted, because of his play in minimal games, and the World's. Who cares about the World's? That was an all star team compared to the crap he has to play in front of in Detroit. I'll honestly laugh my ass off if he turns back into Jittery Jimmy and gets lit up after this. Idiotic Holland. Yeah, I forgot in Wings land that one bad season defines a goalie for his entire career. Good thing they didn't give up on Osgood so easily. They actually traded their Conn Smythe winning starter to give him the net and show confidence in him. Mrazek just seems to get railroaded at every turn. Sure, he was named the starter at one point, but they still had Howard on the bench because he couldn't be traded. That can affect some goalies performance, knowing the job isn't truly theirs, and if they mess up, the guy who's had the net for the past 5-6 years will get it right back. Then Howard gets injured, which should have been Mrazek's time. Instead, Coreau gets a lot of the starts, and ends up with a 3.46 GAA and sv% well under 9.00. Why not let Mrazek work through things when your call up is playing that badly? He eventually got it together towards the end of the season, but still alternated starts with Howard. How hard is it to remove the distractions and stop throwing things in his way to further his development? If he does end up elsewhere after the draft, it may be the best thing for him, cause he won't get a fair shake in Detroit. I honestly haven't seen an organization give up on goaltender with his skill set and potential so quickly. Howard was coddled in the AHL until he ran out of eligibility. Then kept around through bad seasons, injuries, and a major lack of playoff performance for the most part. He'll be on LTIR or retired before this team ever sniffs a Cup again.

That's the thing. Other teams had underperforming high level talents that had s*** attitudes, or one of the other. Kane in Buffalo. Protected. Drouin in Tampa. Traded for high level prospect and 2nd. Mrazek, free for the taking. They should have at least let him play out the last season of his deal, and made a final decision then. Was a bad season all around in 2016-17. Either of the two other goalies had no chance of being taken. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

And who says he'd even play for Vegas? Could be plucked and traded for picks to anyone looking for a young goalie with high potential that can back up their established starter, take time honing his game more, and eventually take over. One year left a $4m, then RFA. RFA status is a bargaining chip for Vegas too, he'd remain under whatever teams control after next season. Kenny must have taken up a very expensive drug habit or something, but whatever. Lol Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Red Wings Expansion Draft Protected List

If he gets claimed and turns out to be a top 5 goalie eventually for another team, f*** that will be hilarious. Eh Holland? ******* idiot. Zero chance Howard or Coreau is looked at, so expose your goalie with the highest potential. You think Vegas cares about his prior mess ups? He's 24. Already showed a lot of promise. Even if they don't keep him, he'll get them something better in a trade than any other unprotected player on the Wings will. McPhee had already talked about "cornering" the goalie market, and grabbing a few and getting assets for them. Mrazek is in that category. Nice knowin ya Petr. May you show what you can do and shove it up Holland's ass while Howard's hurt and Coreau has to start. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

When I saw Mrazek on the list I just laughed. Holland has done some really dumb things, but this easily tops the list. Yeah, Mrazek had a s*** season last year. Carey Price had s*** seasons too. At this point, all I can see in this move that may be good is if Mrazek gets passed over by Vegas and takes it as a wake up call and comes to camp ready to go with his head on straight to take back the starting job. He could also take it as a big "f*** you" though, and refuse to play, and let Holland roll with his protected saviour Howard, who hasn't played more than 60 games since 2012, and has a spotty regular season record, and nearly nonexistent playoff record, and inconsistent big man who plays smaller than Petr, Coreau who showed he wasn't ready for the big team last season, and watch it all unfold and laugh.

    Flames acquire Mike Smith

I wonder if they talked to Holland about Howard. I know they considered him last offseason, but Elliott was a cheap, one year option they felt they could give a test run too. Perhaps Holland is looking for a better return now? Or not interested in moving him anymore at all? No reason for Vegas to take him with Fleury reportedly heading there.

    Flames acquire Mike Smith

Elliott's problem was confidence. He had a good team in STL, but he was still counted on, and was a very good goalie during his time there. Right from the start in Calgary almost, he was getting lit up, lost the starters job to Johnson for awhile, but pulled it back together before the playoffs. Then he just imploded. Change of teams sometimes doesn't work out. Smith played on a bad team and still had great years, but isn't the same goalie he was in his early 'Yotes years, and is 35. I dunno, for all the talk from Calgary about acquiring a sure number 1 guy after Elliott failed, they could have done better.

    Drouin for Sergachyov

Yeah, Drouin was trouble in Tampa. More to this move than the return of prospect/pick. No matter what kind of skill set a player has, if he's a thorn in your side, you'll listen to all offers for him.

    Flames acquire Mike Smith

Smith? Really? Guess they didn't learn anything from the Elliott signing. There's a lot of goalies in play with the expansion draft, could have found a better option. Smith, like Elliott had some great years, but they don't bring enough to a playoff team that relies so heavily on goaltending. Elliott was the main reason why they were taken out by the Ducks in the playoffs. Absolutely horrible play. Cant see Flames fans being happy about this at all. May as well have just kept Johnson.

    15 Years Ago Today

I'm at the fourth goal right now. Man this is giving me chills. What a complete show of domination by the Wings here. Colorado couldn't get anything going, the Wings were always on their man, and what does sneak by, easy saves for Hasek. Haven't watched all the highlights in many years. This is great! Griffins Calder Cup Playoffs Thread

Said the same before as well. When your rebuilding and trying to groom your next long term starting goaltender, you have to show him that you have the confidence in him to take that last step. Keeping Howard around, regardless of his numbers last season, in which he played 26 games, not even enough to make the cut off amount to be included among the top goalie rankings at the end of the season, doesn't show that. And the way Blashill has used Mrazek, even trying to throw Coreau in his way, not starting him in the Winter Classic when he's the supposed half of the shared number 1 spot, give your head a shake. How many other franchises have given their marked future long term starter full reign before they reached their full potential? Montreal with Price is a huge example. Remember the Halak trade uproar? Where's Halak now? Give Mrazek the net without a short leash and competition distractions from the other goalies, and he'll settle in and get that confidence and swagger again. Tell him it's all his, and watch. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
