GDT: 1/14/25 Sharks @ Red Wings

I'll just put my setup here. GDT : Season 98 Episode 43 ; Shooting Sharks in a Barrel Red Wings vs. Sharks: Jan. 14 Viewing Options Date: Tuesday, January 14, 2025 Time: 7:00 PM ET How to watch on TV: ESPN+ Location: Detroit, Michigan Venue: Little Caesars Arena Live Stream: Watch this game on ESPN+ , FDSN Detroit Live Stream: Watch this game on Fubo (Regional restrictions may apply) As the Detroit Red Wings prepare to face the San Jose Sharks, coach Todd McLellan finds himself in a challenging situation. After a commanding 6-2 victory against the Seattle Kraken, he is not completely satisfied with the performance, noting a level of sloppiness that emerged once the team took an early lead. With the game looming and a day off mandated by collective bargaining agreements, McLellan’s desire for practice time reflects his commitment to maintaining the high standards that have marked the Red Wings’ recent success. Having won seven consecutive games since his arrival in December, McLellan acknowledges the unique mentality that comes with winning. The players are hungry for more—eager to find additional strategies for success. "You’re either moving forward or you’re repairing," he asserts, emphasizing the importance of continuous improvement. While scoring an impressive average of 4.42 goals per game during this winning streak, he remains keenly aware of the need to tighten their play on defense. The San Jose Sharks, currently struggling with a record of 13-26-6, present a potential trap for the Red Wings if they allow complacency to set in. McLellan’s message is clear: the Sharks, despite their tough season, cannot be underestimated. He knows that showing any sign of laxity could lead to trouble and is intent on instilling a focused mindset in his players. Even though the day-off complicates matters, McLellan’s emphasis on review and evaluation will continue to guide them through preparation for the Sharks. He intends to use video clips from the Kraken game to highlight areas needing improvement, even if the players might feel less urgency after a decisive win. “It’s harder to sell because they knew it was 5-0 or 6-1,” he admits, but insists that lessons can still be gleaned from what seemed like a comfortable victory. As the Red Wings lace up their skates on Tuesday morning, it might feel a bit like a practice session. With McLellan at the helm, they are likely to approach the day with a keen sense of purpose, ready to sharpen their focus and avoid any repeat of the lapses they showed against Seattle. The stakes are rising as they aim to solidify their position in the Eastern Conference playoff race, and each game counts. As the momentum builds, only time will tell if their hard work and adjusted focus pay off against the Sharks.

Vancouver put Erik Brannstrom on waivers yesterday. Do you think Wings would take as shot at claiming him? Would he be worth having in the organization?

Team is playing great right now, so it's hard to say we need "X" changes. They're fired up right now. It's tough to upset chemistry, but Yzerman best not avoid making improvements again this TDL like last. You could kinda tell the guys looked disappointed that nothing was done last year to help them stay in the playoff picture. It seems Gustavsson and Holl have new life under Yawny, but if Yzerman could add a legit top 4 guy, he should. Andersson comes to mind, but I'm not sure if Calgary is shopping him. Also, what's the time frame for ASP to get here? You don't want too good of a RHD that would suppress his arrival. If we acquired Andersson, we wouldn't want to let him go. He would help immediately on the right side on the 2nd pairing, but neither him nor ASP are 3rd pairing. Although having 3 pairs of legit top 4 players wouldn't be a bad thing. Up front things seem to be perfect right now, but again, I think Yzerman should be looking to make it better. Hoglander doesn't suck, but he's not top 6 talent right now. But IMO in 2-3 years, we'll wish we had acquired him when it wouldn't be costly. I feel the same about Matt Savoie. Get these guys now and reap the huge rewards later. Obviously there isn't going to be a windfall of trades for us this season (although Höglander and Savioe wouldn't cost much) but if within this TDL and next, we could acquire Andersson, Byram, Cozens, Höglander, and Savoie, we'd be sitting pretty for the now, and the future. I'm not against trading draft capital, Veleno, Rasmussen, Berggren, or some prospects. I an against trading Danielson or Kasper though. Just my opinion....

Seems like an overpayment. Danielson is worth more of a return. Hogländer does, but Miller doesn't fit our timeline. Plus he's at $8M for 3 more years and he's 31. Id rather go with Cozens. I'd take Höglander though. Plus Miller has a full NMC he'd have to waive.
  7. Hey you Guys! Ottawa Senators (19-17-2) vs. Detroit Red Wings (17-18-4) When: Tuesday, January 7 Time: 7 p.m. ET Where: Little Caesars Arena (Detroit, Mich.) Channel: FanDuel Sports Network. Ah, Hockeytown—where the air is crisp, the engines roar, and the ice glistens like a freshly Zamboni'd parking lot! It’s showtime as the Detroit Red Wings get ready to tango with the Ottawa Senators in what can only be described as the Wild Card Clash of the Titans (or at least two teams desperately trying to avoid the couch come playoff time). Now, let’s talk about the Red Wings. Under the deft guidance of coach Todd McLellan—who clearly has a magic wand hidden under his suit—they’ve turned from zeroes to heroes faster than you can say “Zetterberg.” With four consecutive wins under their belts, including an impressive 4-2 upset over the Winnipeg Jets (the NHL's equivalent of that one kid who always shows up with gluten-free kale chips at a pizza party), the Wings are starting to look like they remember how to play hockey. Their offense is clicking so smoothly that one might think they’ve installed a new Wi-Fi router for better connectivity! Meanwhile, the Senators are navigating through the proverbial minefield of injuries. Losing star goaltender Linus Ullmark is like entering a swim meet without the proper flotation devices—you’re bound to sink! The Sens have been struggling lately, given their snazzy record of just one win in their last five games, including an embarrassing 4-0 shutout against the St. Louis Blues. Ouch! Talk about a slapshot to the ego! As the teams prepare to face off in this passionate rivalry, the stakes are high. The Wings sit tantalizingly close to the last Wild Card spot, just three points shy of the Canadiens, while the Senators are trying to figure out if they need a map or a miracle to reach the playoffs, sitting twelve points behind the formidable Maple Leafs. This isn’t just a game; it’s a chance for one team to gain precious ground while the other tries to shake off the rust of recent misfortunes. Will the Wings continue their hot streak, or will the Senators find a way to muster up a little magic? Buckle up, folks! It’s going to be a wild ride on the ice! PROJECTED DETROIT LINEUP

GDT: Season 98, Episode 40 : Baby? Baby Ruth!

**Thrilling Overtime Victory for Detroit Red Wings Over Ottawa Senators** In an electric showdown at Little Caesars Arena, the Detroit Red Wings clinched a thrilling 3-2 overtime victory against the Ottawa Senators thanks to Patrick Kane's power-play goal just 11 seconds into the extra period. This win not only showcased the grit and determination of the Red Wings but also marked their fifth straight victory, tying their season-best. The action-packed game began with Detroit striking first at 8:30 in the first period. Dylan Larkin, the Red Wings’ captain who has been on a scoring tear lately, found the back of the net during a power play, thanks to a perfectly orchestrated passing play with teammates Alex DeBrincat and Lucas Raymond. Larkin’s goal extended his impressive streak to four consecutive games, netting five goals during this span and further solidifying his position as a driving force for the team with six points in the last six games. As the second period unfolded, the Senators responded fiercely. Defenseman Thomas Chabot managed to tie the game at 12:25, firing a shot from the blue line that slipped past goaltender Cam Talbot—just moments after a Detroit penalty had expired. The momentum shifted dramatically when Brady "Sloth" Tkachuk lifted Ottawa to a 2-1 lead with a power-play goal scored right before the second intermission, showcasing the Senators' tenacity and ability to capitalize on opportunities. However, the resilient Red Wings refused to back down. Joe Veleno brought the crowd to its feet at 5:00 in the third period, leveling the score at 2-2 with a well-placed rebound shot, further igniting Detroit's hopes for a comeback. With tension in the air and both teams fighting ferociously for every inch on the ice, the Red Wings came perilously close to taking the lead midway through the third, only to be thwarted by a sensational glove save from Ottawa's goalie Anton Forsberg, who displayed excellent reflexes to deny Marco Kasper. The overtime period began with intensity as Moritz Seider drew a hooking penalty against Jake Sanderson. With the clock ticking, all eyes turned to Kane, who seized the moment. Just 11 seconds into the power play, he unleashed a blistering wrist shot that found the back of the net—sending the home crowd into a frenzy and sealing the victory for Detroit. Both teams have faced challenges recently, with Ottawa wrapping up a grueling nine-game road trip and struggling to find their rhythm, having lost five of their last six. Meanwhile, the Red Wings are riding high on their success, buoyed by strong performances across the board. As they continue on this winning streak, the excitement in Detroit is palpable, and fans are eager to see what this revamped Red Wings squad can achieve as the season progresses.

Hopefully they don't turn out to be just big meatballs on bread with ketchup all over them.
  12. not sure if I can get used to AI re-writing things for me, but I guess this isn't too bad.... The Detroit Red Wings have experienced a notable transformation since the appointment of Todd McLellan as head coach, a change that many believe should have been implemented earlier. The team is now exhibiting a more dynamic and inspired style of hockey, reminiscent of the expectations fans had for this squad at the start of the season. With a shift in coaching, the players have found themselves with a renewed sense of purpose, entering a phase where they feel they are competing not only for victories but also for their positions within the NHL. One of the biggest changes McLellan has made is the elevation of Joe Veleno to the top line alongside Dylan Larkin and Lucas Raymond. Additionally, he has taken steps to diversify the defensive pairings by separating Moritz Seider and Simon Edvinsson, aiming to create a more balanced roster. While these strategic adjustments were previously explored by former coach Derek Lalonde, the execution and overall impact have markedly differed under McLellan’s guidance. A cornerstone of McLellan’s approach appears to be a more vocal and engaging practice environment. His emphasis on varied drills has introduced fresh techniques designed to bolster the players' competitive spirit. For instance, a new puck-handling drill adapted from youth hockey was recently revealed, focusing on skill development while fostering situational awareness—key components for battling for possession in tight scenarios. While these changes have invigorated the team's performance, the timing may be critical in determining the season's outcome. As we continue through January, it remains to be seen whether the revitalized play can translate into a playoff push, especially given the Red Wings’ standing relative to other teams vying for a Wild Card spot. Historically, incredible turnarounds are possible; the St. Louis Blues, who began the year in last place in 2019, ultimately captured the Stanley Cup. Although it is uncertain whether the Red Wings possess the capacity for a similar surge, the prospect of contending for an eighth seed in the Eastern Conference should not be entirely dismissed. As these next crucial weeks unfold, General Manager Steve Yzerman faces pivotal decisions. Speculation surrounds potential trades as the NHL deadline approaches, particularly concerning the status of veteran players. Should the team remain outside the playoff picture, trading away seasoned assets in exchange for draft picks or prospects could further aid Detroit’s ongoing rebuild. Such a strategy would align with Yzerman’s acknowledgment that the current roster is not yet equipped for a championship run. Although, I'd like to see him trade some picks and prospects for young NHL players to boost the roster. In conclusion, while challenges remain, the recent coaching change signifies a potentially promising shift for the Detroit Red Wings. With an energized approach under McLellan, the team has the opportunity to redefine its trajectory, making the next several weeks a period of critical evaluation for both the players and management alike. The depth of Yzerman’s prospect pool, combined with the right moves in the coming months, could pave the way for a successful future in Red Wings hockey.

LA has put Arthur Kaliyev on waivers. Any interest? I am not sure he'd make it to Detroit's position, considering that they have risen to 9th from the bottom now. 23 years old, $875K. He'll be an RFA this summer. Could excel with some of our other young players. I's like to see Yzerman put a claim in on him at least.

TITLE CHANGE - 2025 UFA/RFA July 1! (plus summer trades)

Cozins is everything Rasmussen was supposed to be, IMO. Also, I don't wanna see Danielson traded. I'd rather see a 1st traded.

    Lalonde FIRED. McLellan Hired!

He better get this team motivated, ASAP! They can still turn this around! Stop playing the junk players and play the ones that deserve the shot! Hopefully now that Ilitch allowed this to happen, Yzerman can upgrade the team via trades. NO MORE TOP 15 PICKS! Playoffs or else!

Either way, Yzerman is not going to make this team any better this season. That has been shown by not acquiring any of the players that have been on the move recently that would've definitely made the team better. He is probably going to ride this team throughout and see if they can squeak in. As mentioned above, Yzerman could've matched the Kakko trade. Real Trade: Kakko for Boren, 25 3rd, 25 6th US: Kakko for Lagesson, 25 3rd (we have 2), 25 6th Fowler trade: Real Trade: Fowler, 4th for a 2nd, J. Biakabatuka (who we once had) US: Fowler, 4th for a 2nd, E. Viro (or K. Aucoin) Trouba trade: Real Trade: Trouba for a Conditional 4th, U. Vaakanainen US: Trouba for a conditional 4th, again Viro or Aucoin Jiricek trade: Reak Trade: Jiricek and a 5th for D. Hunt, a 2025 1st round pick, 2026 3rd round pick, 2026 4th round pick, and 2027 2nd round pick US: Jiricek and a 5th for (again) Viro or Aucoin, a 2025 1st round pick(protected), 2026 3rd round pick, 2026 4th round pick, and 2027 2nd round pick Liljegrin trade: Real Trade: Liljegrin for M. Benning, a 2026 6th round pick and a Conditional 2025 3rd round pick US: Liljegrin for Lagesson, a 2026 6th round pick and a Conditional 2025 3rd round pick Any one of, or combination of these trades would make our team better. For salary cap issues, you just waive players that suck or try to move some salary out to others.

I would think that since Borgen only has 2 points in 33 games played that Lagesson would be equivalent? Both 28, Lagesson is a bit larger is stature. The draft picks we definitely could've matched.

We could've matched this. Geez! We could've bettered it without losing someone too important! This is what I don't understand about Yzerman. Kakko and, earlier on, Liljegren, could've both come in and been better than what we have. And we could've matched both trades!

Red Wings 2024-25 Season Catch All

I think you are right. It seems Yzerman likes the players that are playing in the men's league over in Europe better than players here throwing kids around in the CHL. The exception, of course, if he was ever awarded 1st overall. I don't see him not drafting any of the 1st overall players taken between 2019 and 2024. Maybe he doesn't take Slafkovsky? He probably would've taken Jack Hughes, Owen Power (Maybe Beniers?) or Bedard if he had one of those 1st overall picks.
  24. LeftWinger

Red Wings 2024-25 Season Catch All

I like Edvinsson, I like Hughes. I think those were Yzerman's 2 choices. If one was gone, he was going to draft the other. I just wonder what he had done if they were both there?
