I want Elizabeth! me-no no no I said sick! who is nick? her-OH! heinz57 11 Report post Posted October 5, 2008 Your sister's friend is your bird? Does that mean what I think it means? No. That is not what I mean. I meant that I wished my sister's friend would stop torturing my bird, and by bird I mean actual bird with wings and feathers and a beak. Get your mind out of the gutter. How was I supposed to know? I don't speak british. You can make excuses all you want, but you can't pin this one on me. Oh wait, did I just say something dirty that I don't know about? Most of the English speaking world has adapted to yanks and the way you all feel that you have the right spellings/meanings of words even though your the only country that uses them. (Words that spring to mind: color, soccer, cell phone, tire, aluminum)

You're attacking 90% of the people here aka "Yanks" You're sparing with one of the girls here which means you're sparing with all of them. and finally if you call a "bird" your girlfriend what do you call a thing with wings, feathers, a beak, and two feet? redwingslady87 130 Report post Posted October 6, 2008 ignoring the attack of "yanks" and just assuming that it is a misunderstanding of slang terms, why do brits and aussies call their girlfriends "birds"? and what do you guys call actual birds? The ones that lay eggs and fly in the air. Also what is wrong with the other words that you mentioned, minus soccer? I know you guys call our soccer, football, where we got soccer from, I don't really care as I'm not a fan of the sport anyway. color: derives from the spectrum of light. cell phone: short for cellular telephone. tire: called "tyres" in British English aluminum: a type of metal. Doggy 130 Report post Posted October 6, 2008 No we call girls in general birds. Saying she's "my bird" is the same as saying "my girl". Get it? I don't know why it's like that, it's far more common slang in the UK. We call actual birds with wings and feathers etc. chuzzwazzas. The origin of that term dates back to the old days when the Simpsons came to Australia. That episode was actually very historical for Australia as it solidified and created many of our customs today such as booting a criminal in the arse in lieu of the death sentence, doing business wearing Speedos in an inflated tyre floating in a backyard pond and of course kangaroo riding. Other than that, we're just like America except we say "aluminium". Make sense now? Cool.

I'm not going to learn all of your slang terms just for you. Deal with it.
