Detroit Lions off-season thread

The Lions have done nothing in the off season that they hadn't done before, the same thing was said when Mooch came here, people were expecting the west coast offense to be PERFECT.

Ktina and McCown aren't much better than Harrington, and they still have no offensive line, no consistency in their WR's, Cory Bradford isn't going to teach Roy Williams much.

I expect the worst from the Lions, because that's what we've been given.

What do the Lions have to lose?

exactly.

The more i think about it. Hell yeah draft Vince Young. Even if he is a bust, the lions are not going to be any worse off then they are right now. What are we really going to draft. Another Aaron Gibson. Another Brent Westbrook. Another Terry Fair.

Waste of a draft pick when you just signed two former starting QBs. If I'm Detroit I'm trying to build my OL or DL with the best player available and not try to bring someone in who can't succeed without protection.

Shouldn't that have been their main concern in the off season? Or maybe it was, but no good OL or DL wanted to come to Detroti because of the clusterf*** that is this "franchise".

I wouldn't touch Young with a 10ft. poll. You take Huff or Hawk (if he drops), if both are off the board you trade down a few spots and take a look at Greenway.

Though there are rumblings that Millen is looking at the possibility of moving up to take Mario Williams. (I'd LOVE this move. LOVE IT. LOVE IT. LOVE IT.)

Huh? What good OL were out there? Huchinson? Ashworth?

Huchinson's great, but he was too expensive. Ashworth? Solid but more well-known for the Visa commercials.

Larry Allen? Old.

The Lions need a pass rush, so who was out there that was dominant? Was Abraham worth messing up your drafting abilities by trading more picks away?

The Lions are best off not busting the bank of FAs -- there'll be some guys still available and their price tags will go down near/after the draft. I like the Lions chances of having a good draft because this year's crop has shown some depth in areas that the Lions need to address: linebacker, defensive ends (kind of), secondary...

You've got Hawk and Huff there high, guys like Greenway, Ryans, Carpenter are there at LB and Hali, Kiwi, etc., could go around where the Lions are in the 2nd.

They ALWAYS have a good draft, in the Kevin Jones, Roy Williams, Teddy Lehman draft people were saying the Lions drafted the best out of anyone. They always draft well, but it doesn't get them anywhere.

Why? Why not get proven guys? Why keep rebuilding every year? Where has it gotten the Lions?

Although, I'm pretty sure not very many players want to come to Detroit anyway/

Lions need Huff, I think they can get him right where they are. Even though I don't like Hawk, I would love him if he slipped to us. Lets stay away from Young, I don't want to wait another 3 years just to see if we have a half way decent QB.

The draft is where you get players you couldnt ordinarily bring in as UFA's. Pittsburgh will draft a WR or two because they cant get a solid #2 receiver to come in on the cheap and play in that offense.

If Detroit has a similar problem like at OL, they need to draft those positions. Problem with the Lions is they have more needs than they have picks

Just because the Mel Kipers of the world give the Lions rave draft-day reviews doesn't mean they hit the motherload. (See: Bryant Westbrook, Chris Claiborne and to lesser degrees Joey Harrington and Charles Rogers so far.)

Besides, after things have "come to light" during this offseason you can really see that it was likely the fault of the coaching staff that they didn't get the max out of the players they DID draft.

Why?  Why not get proven guys?  Why keep rebuilding every year?  Where has it gotten the Lions?

Why? Why would you bust the bank when the free agent crop in positions of need are not of a good enough quality to justify what you'd pay them? Why overpay? Why saddle yourself like that with players that are in the twilight of their careers?

Hello, Brock Marion?

Just when i thought it was a no-brainer to take Huff, I spot the gaping holes at LB. Man i dont know what the hell this team should do now...OL, LB, DB, DE, all areas that need help. Its giving me a headache! The thought of moving up to take Mario Williams though is very intriguing...given Marinelli's background i think its a very strong possibility! I guess with Williams and Shaun Rogers up front you could maybe get away with having that average LB corps.

Yeah, you could. Marinelli has long-stated that the war is won in the trenches and the Lions haven't had a consistent pass rush in ages...

Is Williams worth Huff/Ryans or Hawk/Gilles to you? Makes you think, if the Lions would have to part with their 2nd this year to move up.

Mario Williams is going to be picked very high in the draft. The Jets are the team that every mock draft seems to have picking him up. The Jets are also interested in Joey Harrington. Too bad the Lions can't package a deal with the Jets that includes Harrington and has us grabbing Mario.

Also, Bobby Carpenter is a LB that will be around late in the 1st round-early 2nd. What do you think about adding him to the LB core?

I think it would be worth giving up the 2nd, like you said we havent had a good pass rusher in YEARS. To have a DE who actually has alot of skill to pair with Rogers would be something. Then trade Joey and pray you can get an extra 3rd rounder out of him..

Everyone knows that Super Mario's going high, it's just how high: IMO, either 2 or 4. If the Saints believe that Brown is good enough on the OL to not justify adding Brick, then I could see them drafting Mario. (That and Darren Howard is an Eagle now, too.)

Plus, with the Jets trading off Abraham, they too have a hole at DE and Williams makes a *ton* of sense there as well.

I'd be shocked if Harrington went to the Jets. Cincy, Miami, Baltimore or (less likely) Denver, IMO. Miami the most likely destination.

Does Joey get a better shot at starting at the Jets rather than those other teams. He might get a fair shot in Baltimore. But he would be the backup in Miami, Denver, and Cincy for sure.

Can you imagine the success that Lendale White would have if Pitt was able to get him? Talk about a perfect fit. Can you say 20 TDs???

Very true. Big Baby in the middle stuffing the run and Williams blazing in on the outside keeping the passing game honest. Sounds good to me, especially if Hall rebounds and Edwards builds on last season.

If the Lions get that extra 3rd, what about coupling the two to move up back into the 2nd?

Sure would leave the team skimping on picks (no 3rd or 4th rounders) but they could, theoretically, land a couple of marquee defensive players.

A guy like Stevanovich could still be there in the 5th or so for OL help.

Just not enough picks!
