Matt 1,049 Report post Posted March 16, 2006 If Harrington is going to get traded he'll have to restructure his contract in order to do so. There have been rumblings of that, but I wouldn't expect it. Teams are well aware that he'll end up getting cut and he doesn't have the track record that a player like Culpepper has, not to mention his MONSTROUS cap number this year as his contract currently stands. KC *was* the club that inquired about him. Minnesota & Oakland could also be interested. (Looks like Ramsey may go to the Jets.) Cutting him would save the Lions almost $9M against the 2006 cap. Trading him I think opens up $5-6M against the cap this year but you'd also have the benefit of that draft pick as well. Makes you wonder why the Lions weren't more involved in the Brees sweepstakes if they knew they'd have a $8M+ windfall from Harrington getting cut. Maybe they're satisfied going with Kitna as a No. 1 and are currently weighing the options of signing McCown or going QB in the drafts first three rounds? Matt 1,049 Report post Posted March 16, 2006 MLive just posted up that Harrington is expected to be cut by Monday. If he's not he's not expected to attend the opening of off-season workouts (which start then) and the reason could be because the team is working out a trade. The Lions have until June 15th to cut him before his $4M roster bonus kicks in.
Matt 1,049 Report post Posted March 16, 2006 LOL! Lions just signed McCown (2-years, $6M). See ya, Joey. Could be getting cut pronto... http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2371034 Looks like that $8M windfall could go toward Peterson/Law/Arrington/whom-the-hell-ever.... Lions news galore! lol

Heaton 1 Report post Posted March 16, 2006 I really like this signing, McCown has had some monster games for an awful Arizona team. If he gets some chemistry with our WR's he could be a 300 yard a game guy.

Matt 1,049 Report post Posted March 16, 2006 Joey is as good as gone. He has ZERO trade value and the Lions have no leverage to try and seek a trade from another team. Very interesting move. Martz must like McCown. Not true. The reason Joey hasn't been cut already is because he's (reportedly) renegotiating his contract in order facilitate a trade. There are several potential suitors out there that would take him in as a backup/project at a reduced price.
betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted March 16, 2006 Kitna and McCown competing for the job. Ai-yi-yi. Guess we already know what we're going to hear about during training camp. Not exactly Pro Bowl material, these two, unless Martz can do something. I guess ideally, McCown would grab the starters' job with Martz teaching him a little something. If McCown were being graded on the HF grading scale, he'd be an 8.0D - he's got a lot of potential but isn't likely to ever maximize it....if he ever will, Martz would be the guy to do it. We already know Kitna's ceiling.

Similar to the Terrell Owens situation in Philly, why would a team trade for TO when they know that the Eagles were going to release him to avoid paying the roster bonus. I believe the same to be true of Harrington unless that roster bonus isnt very large. Harrington will be a summer time cap casualty unless another team is dumb enough to trade for him when they can get him UFA during the summer.

I believe the same to be true of Harrington unless that roster bonus isnt very large. Harrington will be a summer time cap casualty unless another team is dumb enough to trade for him when they can get him UFA during the summer. If that were true than why hasn't he been cut yet? His salary this year is $4.45M and he's due a $4M roster bonus on June 15th. We all know he'll be gone by then. He's also due the pro-rated $3.5M bonus payment. More recent news says the Lions may *not* be interested in renegotating his contract and that it was Harrington that made the suggestion that he'd do anything he can contract-wise to help facilitate a trade. I can't see any reason the Lions would have him after the draft at the latest since it deep-sixes any chance at a 2nd-day draft selection (Lions don't have a fourth this year, and I doubt they could get that for him at this juncture.) If he's cut (and I'm figuring this correctly) the Lions have his pro-rated bonus pay compounded against the 2006 cap -- and that's $7 million, almost what the Lions will pay BOTH Kitna and McCown. I'm not saying that Harrington *will* get traded, but it does appear that the Lions will take their time leading up to the draft to try to work out a deal with a team that thinks they'd rather part with a late-round pick and have exclusive-rights ability to renegotiate his contract. mannysBETTER3434 1 Report post Posted March 17, 2006 Getting McCown is just like getting another Joey. 1- Both have showed potential 2- Both played for bad organizations, and did not have much talent around them 3- Both have played absolutley horrible over a stretch of games 4- Both were benched by a vet QB, and dissed by their own teamates. Does this mean McCown is going to suck? No, but don't think were getting a franchise player just yet......

eva unit zero 271 Report post Posted March 18, 2006 This is just sickening. Kitna is an upgrade over Garcia, sure. But McCown is a downgrade from Harrington.
